The Premise:
Here on this world we call Galtei, history has been complicated; almost like waves the heat of conflict sinks only to rise anew into yet another wave of destruction, leaving scars to be felt for centuries from now.
The current year is 1489and the year that will follow marks the 80th year since our discovery of a neighbor, a species similar to us and yet different enough for us to have an inherent fear of them.
The Valdrid, -or "Vaaldrith" as they call themselves- were discovered by a group of human explorers in search of new lands, or more accurately they were discovered by the Vaaldrith who found the intruders making camp at the shores of their island "Meloosi".
Unfortunately for both sides this unforeseen first contact did not end well, lives being lost on both sides and fear ingrained into the hearts of witnesses as well as generations to come after them.
King Zadkis I., king of the human mainland known as "Kwasim", has made great strides in connecting his people with those of Meloosi, his fortress on Shamar island sits in the far east of Kwasim as part of the county of Sickasel, acting as a bastion of unity and peace, sitting right between Meloosi and the land of his own people.
But even with king Zadkis at the forefront of great diplomatic relations with the Vaaldrith, the mainland is heavily parted in their stances on the matter and marked by centuries of fear and resentment.
Meloosi too is making an effort to build stable, safe bridges with King Zadkis and his people, Melaalai; the current Cur of Meloosi, has been very welcoming to his neighbors, but even he can't convince the Vaaldrith lands, or the people of the cold desert beyond Meloosi to let down their loathing and join his cause for unity and harmony between both lands.
With the slow but steadily growing rise of groups who oppose friendly relations with the other race for varying reasons, this mission has become increasingly challenging.
In Kwasim the Church has been known to oppose King Zadkis on several occasions, especially when relations with the Vaaldrith come into play.
To some christians, the Vaaldrith appear as a bad omen, demons not to be meddled with, evil temptation disguised as man. The people fear their tall, towering silhouette, spreading rumours of them being man-eaters, witches, the people of Lilith.
Most people stay out of the conflict and are torn between sides, but the loudest voices, are the most radical, drying the tears of the scared folk, and using the power they gain from it for their cause.
"Chasicha" is what a group on the Vaaldrith mainland call themselves, they value their culture and people more than anything and fear of humans tainting it, they have seen deities of their own, but none of them human, to them this is a sign of their own superiority in not only values but also spirituality. Melaalai has been a main target for their criticism.
You live in the county of Cetove, a small town called Brinnan is what you call home, the people of your county don't like picking a side in this conflict and though people here are stern, they also agree on everyone living their own lives. The mountains from Hohtalim reach all the way into your country, creating a nice mixture of hilly, temperate forest lands.
Zadkis has sent out ambassadors and his knights all across the country in the past year to send out word about an exchange, volunteers, depending on profession (or lack thereof) will collect information, exchange knowledge or otherwise help the Vaaldrith on Meloosi however they can and live with them for a year.
Melaalai and Zadkis are hoping for this to improve relations by providing first-hand and second-hand experiences with the other race.
….and of course, there is some handsome pay involved.
For reasons known only to yourself for the moment, you have volunteered and in a week from now the Vaaldrith ship "Takakak" will set sail to Meloosi with you aboard it… -along with your assigned partner! So far you only know Belial by name, formally on paper, but over the next few weeks that will probably change, especially with him being the only other human besides you aboard the small Vaaldrith vessel.
Tomorrow morning a carriage will collect you for your preparation at the King's fortress, so make sure you refresh your Vaaldrith knowledge, get everything packed and say goodbye to your loved ones!
Short description of the Vaaldrith appearance:
On average taller than humans, Vaaldrith can easily reach heights of 2 meters, though there are also plenty who are smaller… and taller! Their skin colours vary from pale skin tones, to dark plum tones, generally, their skin also seems a bit thicker, mostly hairless and a bit leathery. Stripes of thickened skin layers cover small sections of Valdrith, with the two only vertical stripes usually running down from below their eyes, though stripes can vary greatly among Vaaldrith.
Their general build is more slender to varying degrees, pronounced cheekbones and large eyes are also common traits, the tips of their fingers are wider than ours, making for a better grip.
A Vaaldrith's teeth are large and rounded making for a different, more intimidating smile than most humans are used to.
Despite having larger eyes on average, Vaaldrith irises are enlarged to the point of filling out way more of what is visible through their eyeholes, with much less eye white visible.
Eye colours vary from dark brown, blues, over to pale pinks and ivory tones.
Humans have not heard any reliable descriptions of the people of the cold desert yet.
Generally not much is known of them.
Short character descriptions so far:
Belial August Caspar: An extraordinarily tall and slender priest in his 60s who has been exiled from Sickasel about 30 years ago, for the exchange he has been pardoned and is thus able to enter the county again.
Though stripped from his former titles by the church, he has been stoically taking care of a chapel at the outskirts of the town Meset in the mountains. Not much else is known of him to anyone, since nobody seems to really know him, he only talks as much as necessary.
Though it will probably be unusual to not see this man dressed in dark grey get out of the house at 5:55 on point to light the candles in his chapel.
Pictures of Belial: [1] [2]
Aeskulaph: A youthful Vaaldrith in his 20s, a bit smaller than the average of his kind, but well versed in the human tongue and culture, thirsting for adventure and full of curiosity. Seeing his smiling face one would not expect the almost hoarse, constantly breaking voice that comes out of his mouth. He works as a fisher and merchant on the "Takakak" alongside his friend and captain Dwareeletep.
Aeskulaph has long dark grey hair and large pale pink eyes that will probably stab you with curious looks if his questions don't already.
He was one of the first to enthusiastically volunteer as a guide for humans on this mission, he might seem a bit naive at times, but he can notice a shift in tone instantly.
Pictures of Aeskulaph: (on the right in both) [1] [2]
Dwareeletep: Did not sign up for this, the only thing he hopes to get out of this is money, while he doesn't have too much against humans, his family is part of the Chasicha, skewing Dwa's viewpoint against Aeskulaph's at times.
His knowledge of the human tongue is pretty basic and mostly because Aeskulaph forced him to learn as much.
Aside from his left eye that he keeps covered, Dwa is a healthy and very tall Vaaldrith in his mid-30s, even among his people, his voice is deeper but not nearly as raspy as Aeskulaph's.
Pictures of Dwa: (on the left) [1] [2] [3]
Cornelius Balchemir: (In)Famous for his colourful preachings in the grey county of Sickasel, his toothy smile is enough for three and it barely ever wanes.
He doesn't like talking about his age, but estimates have been made ranging from 20-50 years old, depending on the lighting.
His theatrical and overly dramatic demeanor with tiny black irises darting through the crowd is a bit unorthodox to.. Everyone, but it also carries an odd charm with it to watch this eccentric character.
He is very thin, too thin some would say as if his body can't keep up with supplying his constant high strung energy.
Cornelius is a heavy opposer of any human-Vaaldrith relations and even goes as far as to suggest "countermeasures".
Pictures of Cornelius: [1] [2]
King Zadkis I.: Is the current king of Kwasim, he and his wife; Queen Ellana, have been making grand efforts to connect the Vaaldrith to their own people.
Zadkis' father and former king Jonah III. had attempted to seek a connection but received severe backlash from the church, leading to him growing silent over the years.
He died sooner than expected due to illness in his 50s, leading to Zadkis being crowned at 15. In the current year he is 33 years old.
Zadkis is well respected as a king nowadays, known to be a just and smart leader , though his support has been fading with increased support of an alliance with the Vaaldrith. Some people perceive his support to be a facade to try and establish lucrative trade routes with exotic goods.
Melaalai: Cur of the Vaaldrith island Meloosi, his support of the alliance has been the center stone for most operations so far, in his 40s Melaalai is still very spry and filled with childlike curiosity, though he also really likes to play his charm. Some Vaaldrith call him naive, but even with his occasional naivete, he knows what is best for his people.
It is hinted at that he suffers great sadness, but to humans it is not quite known what from.
Lusum: Melaalai's only son, currently 16 years old, not much is known about him yet.
Mentioned characters will be expanded upon further in the PR of course! Additional characters exist but will be introduced during the play.
Quick Notes:
-18+ ONLY, generally mature, including sexual themes will be involved even if they are not a focus point (unless your character ends up making it one), this is a story with an attempt at realistic character dynamics and topics, so everything might come up, really.
-This being a kind of parallel universe, some things are similar to our world, but a lot are different, for example country names!
-This is low fantasy, people can't do random spells, though magic and the occult do exist on a much lower, more nuanced level, like ritual magic for weather changes, deities, etc.
-I heavily prefer and enjoy MalexMale relationships, I make exceptions though. Generally you should be lgbtq friendly!
-The level of technology on the human mainland is more advanced than the year hints at, though it is also quite mixed, guns are generally not a thing, though other inventions have started to take hold, like steam engines and even the early footsteps of electricity. Vaaldrith technology is a bit more like it was to roman times, not as many advancements with steam or electricity, but way better knowledge of waterways and greater medical knowledge
- PLEASE create a character that fits the story, no blue haired anime characters or real life pictures.
-English isn't my native language, but I still try my best and would prefer someone who writes semi- literate texts.
-I reaaaallly like seeing characters develop their own relationships with the people and surroundings they encounter, organic and authentic development of characters is really important to me! The story has no real goal, our characters decide where it goes!
t goes!
