Juliana was born into a time of turmoil in the kingdom of Mistbury, where war raged at the Northern Border. Nearly all of her life, conflict was prominent. Not just outside the castle walls, but within them as well. Her father often let his temper get the best of him, and he would rampage through the corridors, breaking vases and tossing frames off the walls. The only thing that proved effective in calming him was Juliana's mother, her soothing words and soft voice able to curb his anger and frustration.
Juliana grew up stepping carefully around her father, trusting her mother a great deal more than he. She would take tea with her mother in the gardens while Septus met in the War Room with his generals and colonels, planning their next move in the war against the North. With her sisters in the castle as well, Juliana often was given the responsibility of watching after them when their parents left for diplomatic affairs.
It wasn't until Juliana was almost twelve years old that the war ended. It was not the end that was usually met, with a truce or a final, bloody battle that proved too much of a loss. It ended with assassination.
The North had sent an assassin contracted to kill the King to the Mistbury Castle. Somehow they infiltrated the defenses, slipping past countless guards and soldiers. After taking time to scour the castle for their target (to no avail), they settled for the Queen Alysia, who had been sleeping soundly in the King's chambers.
The castle was jolted awake in the wee hours of the night by a piercing scream - Juliana had found her mother, throat slit, the sheets soaked in her still-warm blood.
A manhunt throughout the entire kingdom and beyond started immediately, ending with the assassin's head displayed on a pike on the Northern border. The North, from fear of mass retaliation for Mistbury's beloved Queen being murdered, surrendered without question.
From then, Septus shut himself off from his daughters. He rarely interacted with them on a fatherly level, with fleeting words uttered as he passed them in the corridors or dining hall.
Juliana, on the other hand, began her preparations for taking the title of Queen upon her 21st birthday. She went from being a timid and soft-spoken Princess to a headstrong, confident Heir to the Mistbury throne. While Seraphina, Evangeline, and Emma pursued things like Princes and new dresses to add to their wardrobes, Juliana trained with the castle guards, bettering herself in close-range combat and building her athletic endurance. She spent hours in the library and with the castle apothecaries, training her mind and gaining skills not usually expected in a Queen.
She honed herself as best she could, keeping her intelligence sharp and her body in shape. Mistbury would not lose another Queen.
In the late hours of the night, Juliana isolated herself in dark corners of the library or deep int the gardens, mourning her late mother and letting herself be vulnerable where nobody could stand witness. Her mother would not be forgotten, and she would not let her death steer the kingdom in the wrong direction.
Juliana often attended political meetings beside her father, getting a feel for the atmosphere of interacting with the other kingdoms. When conflict was brought up or bouts of shouting ensued, she would stand and call for silence, reminding them of the cause of Queen Alysia's death. That often shut them up, and the talk returned to the matter at hand.
This gained her the name of "Peacemaker", one only whispered in the War Room by soldiers and politicians who stood to gain from conflict. The name eventually reached the streets of Mistbury, where subjects and civilians would shout it enthusiastically as she passed. This all happened about the time she had reached the age of 19, the date of her coronation creeping closer.
It was around this time that Juliana took to sneaking out of the castle, often in her hunting clothes and cloaked in a deep green cape and hood. She would mingle with her people, laughing in taverns and volunteering in soup kitchens. Most turned a blind eye to her identity, though she knew that she fooled no one when it came to who she was. Even the city guards tended to ignore her presence, though she noticed there were always a few not far off.
One night, after a particularly nasty argument between Juliana and Septus, she had snuck out with plans to drink the night away at the closest tavern. She ended up talking with a woman at the bar - her name was Azalea, and Juliana quietly compared the beauty of her to the flower the was named after. They sat at the bar long into the night, where they shared stories and jokes, and Juliana eventually whispered her true identity to the woman, who had already put that together but acted surprised nonetheless.
It was that night that Juliana first discovered her attraction to women - she spent the night at that tavern, between the sheets with Azalea until the sun hung high in the sky the next day. Azalea had kissed parts of Juliana that she barely knew existed and caused her to feel things she had never felt before.
When Juliana awoke, she found the sheets beside her cold and empty, the only thing left in the place of Azalea a note scrawled on a small piece of parchment. The words expressed regret that she had to leave without warning, but explained that she had done it for Juliana's protection.
Juliana returned to the castle that morning to find her father pacing the foyer. He attempted to apologize, but she was in no mood to hear his words, or anyone else's. She locked herself in her chambers for nearly three days, spending a lot of the time sitting on her balcony, staring out over the kingdom and wondering with a stinging pain in her chest where Azalea could have gone.
