Miranda grew up in a quiet home in the projects of New York. Her family worked hard, laid low and stayed out of trouble as much as they could. Her parents weren't the worst, but they didn't exactly care for her and her two younger brothers because of their drug addiction so she spent most of her time being their care-giver. By the time she was 12, she'd become a full-time mom, she even stopped going to school on time to make sure her brothers got to their school safely because they went to two different schools because they were younger then her. She'd leave early to pick them up on time and miss classes when they were sick to take care of them. Her parents at that point though had both spiraled out of control in their addiction. They spent many nights away on binges, and when they were home they would only throw money on the table.
By the time she was 16, she found a job thanks to one of her parents old friends who stopped by from time to time to check on them. She was sure at that point that the older man was the only one who cared about them. He was the owner of a club that was on the other side of town, in the red light district. He said she could work under the table for him washing dishes in the back and so she did exactly that. She was putting food in the fridge while trying to upkeep her studies.
When her brothers(twins) turned 16 and she 19, her mother died from an overdose. Their father followed not to long after her. She figured that he couldn't live without his partner in crime. The house was left to her and her brothers and they lived there alone ever since.
Along the way, she found herself making some devious friends from the club she worked at. She went from washing dishes, to begging the owner to let her be a server, to begging him to let her dance. She was making enough money to leave but she didn't have the heart to leave her brothers alone so she stayed. When she turned 22, she met her ex-boyfriend Tommy who was a patron that she slowly started to fall for. Once he got her in his grasp, things changed. He asked her to move in with him and she said yes, taking this chance to be separate from her brothers who he thought depended on her too much for adults. He started to go with her everywhere she went, meeting all of her friends and telling her they were too fake and that he didn't want to hang out with them again. He isolated her and eventually he tried to force her to quit her job at the club, saying that she needed to try to have a better reputation than being a stripper to be with him.
At 25 Miranda found herself in the hospital with a stab wound to her back after her boyfriend tried to take her phone away from her. She'd had enough and tried to fight back and she hit him in the face. He'd been violent with her before, but he punched her in the face and she told him she was leaving and she wasn't going to ever see him again. He ran to his kitchen, told her if he couldn't have her then she would be 6 feet under and then stabbed her in her shoulder.
Miranda drove herself back to her home where both of her brothers were and she stumbled in screaming for their help. They took her to the hospital where she passed out and woke up hours later with six stitches in her shoulder. He'd stabbed her with one of the butchers knives in the block. Her lip was busted and her face was bruising badly. Her ex went to prison for attempted murder and she tried to find some normalcy in her life.
The club owner had returned to her and told her that his children were going to take over the club and that they wanted to offer her the studio flat above to have a safe place to get her life back together. They said that she could start working in the club as the bartender instead of a dancer, and she agreed. She moved in two weeks later, telling her brothers that she would be fine, that they could help her move or she'd do it all herself. Reluctantly the two helped her and she settled into her new home.
She would eventually return to work once her shoulder healed enough.
