I am brainstorming new ideas about how my two characters first meet and became friends- which means changing this element in my story from what it's been, should I find a better way.

I will provide more detail below but if you need more info ask. Tried to keep this post as short as possible. I have discussed this story at great length here several months ago and some of you may remember but I do not expect anyone to remember a thing about it.

Anyway... in the original story my two characters first meet at a bar in Coney Island in the early 1970s. One of the characters is from the neighborhood whereas the other is not- he has recently moved to NYC from England and is exploring the city and finds himself at this bar at the same time as the main character and that is how they meet. It is more complicated than that.

The flashback part of the story follows the relationship between these two guys and how they evolve from drinking buddies into falling in love with one another. My main character is a blue collar guy from Brooklyn who has always assumed his life as a straight guy- as expected of him. The other character is openly gay- daringly so- for the era. Throughout the story as the relationship deepens, MC is torn between the feelings he develops for Chris and his commitment to his family.

I suspect Ben's relationship with his girlfriend should already be in progress or even so that she and Ben already married or thing to be at the time they meet - just to make his life harder and his options more difficult by being tied down by his commitment. If he was single he could just be with Chris because there's nothing in the way to stop him.

Some suggestions from creative story tellers to help me come up with something profound and unique as well believable would be helpful. I love serendipity, I really do. I have sweated over the idea of them having already met previously, knowing eachother from the bar only and then sometime later, be it the two years that pass or whatever, my main character runs into him by accident in the scene where he helps him. That seemed very unlikely. Especially considering the distance apart where they live. This is why I originally decided meeting at the beach makes sense because it's a place where they both could be more than once where someone like Ben AND Chris could be without it being weird.

MC lives in Coney Island which is almost as far as one can live in Brooklyn from Manhattan- where my other character lives.

My main character is "straight" so it's not like they typically would be hanging out in the same places.

Working together isn't an option nor is school as an opportunity to meet.

Why would my MC be in Manhattan regularly other than working in the city and- would he really be driving all the way from Coney Island to work in the city? I'm not even sure what he does for a living at this point.

What situation could possibly bring them together to foster the opportunity and time to get to know each other by seeing each other regularly?

How would my straight guy manage this friendship with his gay friend and spending time together without pissing off his lady? What would he tell her??
