character: Jasper Barnett and YC
wordbank/themes: authoritarianism, government surveillance, paranoia, class conflict, celebrity culture, tabloid coverage, substance abuse, trauma, violence (revolutionary, extrajudicial, interpersonal), the dark side of technology, rebellion & resistance, overconsumption & excess
about:
Jasper is the winner of last year's Games, the only one District 12 has had in living memory. During the slaughter at the Cornucopia, he'd acquired a pickaxe. He won by using it to set off a rockslide that crushed the remaining tributes as they slept. Now that those Games are over, he's the newest celebrity sensation. The wealthy elites are eager to snatch him up - and like every other Victor before him, Jasper is also technically a sex slave. The government has every Victor's family surveilled, and has a proven track record of murder or maiming when met with any resistance.
Ideas for your character:
- the new incoming D12 tribute for next year's games: either another 18 year old (just when they thought they were safe from the reaping) or there's a Quarter Quell that expands the age of the reaping pool; or chooses adults instead of childrenIn Jasper's case, he was reaped at 18 because he had taken out hundreds of tesserae to supplement his family's meagre means. So by the time the Games rolled around, his name was more likely to be picked
- a Victor from a previous year. Maybe someone more experienced with surviving the glittering hellscape, taking the newbie under his wing. Or someone who won a few years ago, and is now understanding that most people have moved on to other, newer obsessions- a Stylist or some other member of Jasper's team
Regardless of which background, the only other important thing is that they have some connection to an underground rebellion. No matter how tenuous. Someone who can get news about uprisings, who shows Jasper that it's even possible.
