Movie Nights Movie Streams and Planning Ahead (for once)

Afternoon Sanctum,

Following the Barbiethon, we've had a couple more stream suggestions and this time, to get my ducks in a row a little earlier, I'm going to plan them a little further in advance.

First request was a marathon of Renaissance Disney films. Pretty straightforward: We'll start with Little Mermaid and go forward in chronological order until at least Tarzan, though I might well go through the whole 2D animated era (Emperor's New Groove, Lilo and Stitch and Princess and the Frog in particular have been requested)

Second was a marathon of classic gangster movies. Godfather I and II, Goodfellas, Once Upon a Time in Americaโ€”other suggestions are welcome, though we need to budget since this is a whole genre of long movies.

As always, other stream ideas are always welcome and I'll try to slot them in. The plan is for both of these to occur in June.

Some ideas, if they haven't been done already:

-Indiana Jones series stream (five was good you guys are just losers),
-The Dark Knight stream,
-LOTR/The Hobbit stream,
-Avatar (blue people not airbenders) and Avatar: Way Of Water,
-A Kubrick marathon (Dr. Strangelove, 2001, The Shining, Eyes Wide Shut, etc.)
-Jurassic Park marathon

Bratz, need I say more?
Sailormoon, please please please!

Edit: or!
- Mexican Dramas -
Like water for chocolate
Ninas Mal 2007
Amar te duele 2002
Midaq Alley 1966
Macario 1960
Y tu mama tambien 2001
Sophie's choice
Don't move

I'm still pushin' for a David Lynch stream, but I'd be willing to forfeit my eternal love for that weird old man if it means getting an Evil Dead/Evil Dead II/Army of Darkness stream instead.

I said it already, but since it's such a great film (and totally about gangsters) -- Miller's Crossing (1990). Prohibition era, Irish v Italian mob kinda beat. Well written. Great story.

I think a Dealer's Choice event would be a fun idea. Get people to submit their movie, and people show up and watch it. The theme being something they really like, something that's meaningful to them, something that taught them as a writer etc. If anyone was so inclined, they could write up a short little thingie about why they chose that movie and maybe encourage discussion.

Sadly, these things almost always happen when I'm working, but that doesn't mean I don't like giving people homework assignments suggestions to check out ๐Ÿ˜

Okay! First stream will be Saturday, May 31st

I decided to start with WISIA's idea of traumatic childhood movies

Preliminary list (order not set in stone):

Who Framed Roger Rabbit (1988) โ€” 104 minutes

Land Before Time (1988) โ€” 66 minutes

The Iron Giant (1999) โ€” 86 minutes

E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982) โ€” 120 minutes

An American Tail (1986) โ€” 77 Minutes

An American Tail: Fievel Goes West (1991) โ€” 76 minutes

Watership Down (1978) โ€” 101 minutes

All Dogs Go to Heaven (1989) โ€” 85 minutes

Labyrinth (1986) โ€” 101 minutes

Total: 816 minutes, 13.6 hours

Second Stream, Saturday June 14th: The Disney Renaissance (and then some?)

(The stream will go in Release Order)

Little Mermaid (1989) โ€” 83 minutes

Beauty and the Beast (1991) โ€” 84 minutes

Aladdin (1992) โ€” 90 minutes

The Lion King (1994) โ€” 88 minutes

Pocahontas (1995) โ€” 81 minutes

The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1996) โ€” 91 minutes

Hercules (1997) โ€” 93 minutes

Mulan (1998) โ€” 87 minutes

Tarzan (1999) โ€” 88 minutes

Total: 785 minutes โ€” 13 Hours

I am tempted to nix Pocahontas, because the movies that follow are:

Emperor's New Groove (2000) โ€” 78 minutes

Atlantis: The Lost Empire (2001) โ€” 95 minutes

Lilo & Stitch (2002) โ€” 85 minutes

Princess and the Frog (2009) โ€” 97 minutes

Which... those are all much better movies than Pocahontas. But then again, even total, that's only 19 hours, so with some picking and choosing, plus the length of credits, we could just run long

And finally, Saturday June 28th: Gangster movies, for all you heathens who really have not wiped watching the Godfather off that bucket list.

Gangster movies (No set order)

The Godfather (1972) โ€” 175 minutes

The Godfather Part II (1974) โ€” 202 minutes

The French Connection (1971) โ€”103 minutes

Eastern Promises (2007) โ€” 100 minutes

Gangs of New York (2002) โ€” 166 minutes

Goodfellas (1990) โ€” 145 minutes

891 minutes. 14.85 hours

I don't know how this all works, but I could suggest a few films. One which might fit into the Gangster day could be Lawless (prohibition era, based on a true story).
Devil All The Time is another good film based on a book, from around the end of WWII, if I remember right.
Bunraku...not sure how to categorize that one, but it's pretty good.

Another theme day, Studio Ghibli films.
Or Kung-fu films.

You should add Pulp Fiction to Gangster Day ๐Ÿซฃ

I would love to, but that day has already been cut to the bone for length because gangster movies are so damn long.

Oh I haven't seen An American Tale in forever, nor with Who Framed Roger Rabbit. Watership Down a classic, used to have that on Video Cassette. Never seen the Iron Giant. The others I have seen but it'd be nice to revisit childhood. The gangster movies I have never seen. Might try to actually turn into one of those for once. ET was great as a kid. I'd suggest a movie in the future BUT am not sure how much difficult it is to find. Legend! Loved that movie. In case nobody knows it came out in 1985. Actually...that might an interesting movie stream idea? Movies from the 80s-90s? I'd suggest Ben Hur but that movie is like 3 hours long (I think) and came out in 59. Still, I liked it, watched it in Social Studies Class in 6th grade when we were doing our fun medieval class/study on the 5 major religions. Sorry, reminiscing but it was one of the few times I liked school (even though I think we were pretending were in Babylon or something (cannot remember the exact city) and had to go up and down the stairs of the school looking for stuff). We also did plays (don't have mine anymore) and read Castle in the Attic and Return to the Castle in the Attic. If we do something from the 80s, I recommend ummm...shoot what is that... Salem's Lot! NOT the 2024 version (apparently that got remastered?), the original one. Okay so it's 79 but it's close enough to be included in the 80s. We could throw Legend in to that one as well.

Sorry, I don't know why I suggest stuff when I never end up joining the streams despite being signed up. I'll shut up now. Oh....sorry another idea? A list of movies from John Carpenter? I realize that may repeat some movies so maybe skip those that have already been seen? I vote with dispatch...totally down for a Indiana Jones thing! Have not seen the newest movie but love Indie. Even got his young adventure series.

Since that Jurassic Park movie (how many more are they going to make) comes out in July, I'd be down for that too next month. Love dinos (even though I know JP isn't scientifically accurate anymore in anything-cough the velociraptors being huge/dinos being all reptilian). Maybe a movie stream by James Cameron?

+1

Also if we do in fact do a traumatised-your-childhood stream I say now that it must include The Plague Dogs. I could list many other weird films that traumatised my childhood, but I know this one is a staple of fucking with people's childhoods. So much so the author re-wrote his own book to shoehorn in a happier ending because even he was too depressed by it.
