He woke up with a deep exhale as the shivers attacked his spinal cord and even made the dancing lights sparkle in the darkness around him from his line of sight. It felt like he had been out running.. He felt odd in his body and felt a pressure in his chest from the vivid dream that technically wasn't a bad one in common senses yet for him it was the worst possible thing that could have happened in this moment. He had dreamed he was back in highschool with the tedium of everyday life eating him up; the studying for exams, The long classes and the main point of being severely bullied. All day, every day. Stuck in an eternal loop where when you thought you were to be freed from them it started over. Like if he were in hell or something.
His dreams had not bothered him for years but as soon as he had gotten that letter in the mail they started to go crazy again. It had been some long and unrestful days since its arrival without doubt. He felt upset, scared and a wave of bad memories occupied his brain where he sat up at the edge of the bed, put his feet down at the floor with hands frustrated flowing through his thick hair. It was soon to be ten years since he graduated from high school and left that hell behind him but it was coming back like a bad case of herpes just because of that letter. How could such a small thing turn his world upside down in this manner? He was already tired of it and really just wanted to go back to his nice nights again.
The letter was an invitation back to the school he had tried to forget about for so long, the "celebrate" ten years and meet up with your old "friends" type of thing which was nothing that he wanted to be a part of. He had nothing to celebrate and most importantly he had not a single friend back then so what was really the point? There was no worse hell than to force yourself to be nice to people you used to hate after all. He reached out his hand to flick on the light next to his bed before standing up, walking out of his bedroom while starting to light up his apartment on his way to the kitchen. His eyes locked on a spot on his fridge where the very letter sat pinned with the help of a magnet. He remembered how it had started; With that lump in his belly as he saw the name of the highschool printed on the envelope.. to think that a mere name could set in such a bad feeling within you, making you feel like a unsecure kid once again as fast as he had lit his apartment right now.
A sigh left the young man as he removed the letter from the fridgewall to start opening it back up and read it.
It was like a slap to the face for him once again. He had never intended to return to that place and the goal had always been to just ignore its existence until the day he died. Yet here it was.. He had even changed his name since High School to get a fresh start but it seemed like they had found him anyway. Sure; He could go there boasting about his pretty, rich fiance. His five figure salary and the journey he had taken to get to where he was now but.. why would he? What was the point of it all when it would just bring back all these horrible feelings and memories? He hadn't slept well for days at this point over the mere thought about this upcoming event. No he was done with it! If they didn't appreciate him back then they would get the same treatment now! With a forceful grip with both hands on the fancy paper he had decided what to do; with a smooth and effective rip he tore the letter apart before throwing it away in the garbage where it belonged. He would not let this bother him any longer, he decided right here and now that every future letter from his old school wouldn't even be opened. It had no right to mess up his life anymore and deserved to fully reside in the past.
With a feeling of ease washing over him from the choice he just made he then turned off all the lights on his way back to his bedroom. Locked his eyes at the picture on his wall from last christmas where all the family members on both sides squeezed together with him and his fiance in the middle. They all had big smiles on their faces and some even laughed, dressed in Santa hats and hideous, yet charming christmas sweaters and he couldn't help but to smile. His future was bright, happy and that was what he was going to focus on from now on. The past should be left in the past.
