Luna has grown up as the daughter of a werewolf hunter, raised under the shadow of her father's hatred toward the creatures he believes killed his wife. Her father has dedicated himself to hunting werewolves and seeking revenge for the loss of his wife, while Luna has largely accepted his understanding of what happened to her mother.
What neither Luna nor her father knows, however, is that Luna's mother was a werewolf herself.
That secret isn't something her father has deliberately kept from Luna—he genuinely believes his wife was killed by werewolves. Luna has therefore grown up completely unaware that she carries the very nature her father has spent his life hunting.
Bastien, meanwhile, is a werewolf who has always struggled with his transformations. His wolf is difficult to control, and he has spent much of his life wrestling with the darker, more instinctive side of himself.
Then he meets Luna.
Something about her seems to quiet his wolf in a way nothing else ever has. At the same time, Bastien develops an almost instinctive protectiveness toward her. Despite everything that should keep them apart, the two find themselves drawn increasingly closer.
The irony is that Luna is the daughter of the man hunting Bastien's kind—and neither of them initially understands just how deeply connected Luna actually is to the supernatural world.
Luna's father eventually kills one of Bastien's friends, making their already complicated connection even more dangerous.
By all rights, this should drive Luna and Bastien apart.
Instead, they move closer.
There is an inexplicable force pulling them together, something neither of them can quite understand or resist. Bastien's wolf responds to Luna in a way that feels almost instinctive, while Luna finds herself increasingly drawn toward a man who represents everything her father has taught her to fear.
Then Luna's life is destroyed.
Her home burns to the ground, taking the evidence of the werewolf body with it, and her father is forced to leave town. Luna is left with nothing.
Bastien takes her in.
And unknowingly, by bringing Luna into his world, he begins awakening something that has always been inside her.
Luna's first transformation comes as a complete shock.
She didn't know she was a werewolf.
She didn’t even believe they existed.
She spent her life believing her father was a mad man.
Her transformation therefore isn't merely frightening—it completely changes her understanding of herself and her family.
Her father doesn't know either.
He has spent his life believing that werewolves murdered his wife, never realizing that the woman he loved was one of them. Luna's discovery therefore threatens to unravel everything she believed about her mother, her father's hatred, and the circumstances surrounding her mother's death.
And while Luna is trying to understand what is happening to her, Bastien is facing his own crisis.
The timing couldn't be worse.
Bastien has just overthrown Logan and become the new Alpha.
Suddenly, he has an entire pack depending on him while simultaneously trying to help Luna through her first transformations.
But Luna cannot control her shifting.
Her fear grows until she becomes terrified that she is dangerous to the people around her.
Eventually, that fear becomes reality when she loses control and hurts Bastien's sister.
For Luna, this is devastating.
She has already lost her home and her father is gone. Now she believes she is becoming the very monster her father spent his life hunting.
So she runs.
Bastien eventually finds Luna and brings her back to town, but Luna refuses to stay near his family.
She is terrified that she will hurt them again.
Her distance isn't because she no longer cares about Bastien. In many ways, it's the opposite. She believes removing herself is the only way she can protect him and his family.
