PIRATES & MERMAIDS
a rag-tag group of pirates get into some trouble when they "accidentally" steal a crown... well, the crown. the one that belongs to an ancient, all-powerful, siren. the crown seems to be a beacon for magic, and, consequently, trouble, and monsters and magical beings seem to follow them wherever they go. one of these "magical beings" is a mermaid, who quickly realizes the crew's mistake and agrees to help them in exchange for a spot on their ship.

Piper Morgan was born August 8th, in the belly of a sinking ship. Her mother had died in labor, and her father, who'd been a gunner on the Gold Eagle, a pirate-hunting ship controlled by the king, was trying to balance the birth of his newborn child and getting his ship overrun by pirates.
Elizabeth Turner was the daughter of Michael Turner, the Captain of the Gold Eagle, and was the surgeon of the ship. She was incredibly talented, no doubt, but most ships at the time were male-dominated, so her father being the captain of the Gold Eagle had earned her a spot.
James Morgan had been a lowly gunner on the ship, one of many. He had fallen for Elizabeth the moment he'd first seen her, and he had a strange tendency to get himself hurt. Of course, he was only doing so to see Elizabeth, but he couldn't tell anyone that.
After a year or two of this routine, the two were eventually discovered, and Elizabeth had pleaded with her father to keep James on the ship. Captain Turner, who loved his daughter dearly, had reluctantly agreed, seeing how in love the two were, and the rest was history.
After a year of dating, Elizabeth became pregnant with Piper, and the entire ship was overjoyed- especially James and Captain Turner. Both James and Elizabeth were excited to raise Piper as a true sailor, as they both loved the sea and adventure close to their hearts.
Captain Turner, however, had his doubts. He didn't want Piper to grow up on a ship, to have the life he had. He believed that Elizabeth and James were too young and naive to know what life they wanted for their child, and he was willing to do anything to secure a better life for Piper. Anything.
On the night of August 8th, when Piper Morgan was to be brought into the world, an attack on the Gold Eagle took place. A group of pirates had attacked the ship, and a battle raged overhead as Elizabeth helped James deliver Piper, strangled instructions through grit teeth as she was her own midwife.
Piper had been delivered, but Elizabeth wasn't so lucky. She didn't make it. James, who had little to no time to mourn her death, focused on Piper as a distraction. He was soon brought over to the invading pirate ship, where he was kept prisoner. They'd taken Piper away from him, so he was now without his child or lover.
The pirates had been kind enough to put Piper in the care of a woman on the ship, one with her own children. Her luck, again, was astounding. James Morgan was still belowdeck, however, and he began to mull over the events in his head. Why had they been attacked that night, of all nights? Why were they even in pirate territory?
He began to blame Captain Turner, remembering how he'd protested the idea of Piper growing up on a ship. Maybe he'd wanted them to be attacked- to show James and Elizabeth how horrible life would be for Piper, had she grown up on a ship. His own guilt manifested into blame, and he agreed to give the pirates information on the Gold Eagle in exchange for a position on the ship.
He'd become bitter, cruel, and most of all, determined to protect Piper with his last breath. He began to go a bit mad, paranoid that Captain Turner would come back and take Piper away from him, like he did Elizabeth. He was bloodthirsty, hunting down any naval ship he could, advancing through the ranks of the ship rapidly. In a matter of ten years, he was captain, and one of the best pirates the sea had seen.
He trained Piper, too, wanting her to be able to protect herself from anything. James was no longer the loving, warm man on the Gold Eagle. He was Captain Morgan, a heartless pirate thirsty for revenge. He had a soft spot, though, for Piper.
By the time Piper was eighteen, she was as good a pirate as her father. She was an expert swordsman, navigator, theif- you name it. Her father, though, was getting sick.
He was in his forties at the time, and he'd fallen ill with a fatal disease. One year later, he was dead, and the ship was now Piper's. She had nothing left but to carry on her father's legacy, and that she did. Naming her ship "James's Revenge", she continued her father's search, pirating ships and gold along the way.
With her Quartermaster Bobby Bones as her mentor, she lives out her father's dream as she sails the seven seas, earning the name "Captain Red" along the way. Little did she know, her adventure was about to get a whole lot bigger.
