backstory:
He was born in jail. No one would tell him who his mother was (but she was actually a witch that almost brought down several 'civilized' kingdoms/citiesdepending on the era. so she was powerful) and only the mother knew who the father was, but let's assume strong in his own right.
His only knowledge came from being locked away without knowing why in an anti-magic cell until he tricked a guard, snagged some keys, and broke out. Once he was out, he felt a big surge of 'something'magic and he was gone. Over the years, he learned what he was, how he could use it, and read every book that he could get his hands on and then some. Hence, the large library.
Now that he is far away from his birthplace, he has hidden away for protection purposes.
After some years had passed and he grew into himself (no longer looking like the nasty little boy from the jail). He goes out on all kinds of social events, wooing ladies, then disappearing for his own sake. He thinks he cannot let anyone close to him or he will be exposed/ridiculed/would have to run again.
