Captain Murali is the commanding officer aboard the Nebula-class starship, USS Babel. Raj has served in Starfleet since graduating the Academy in 2323, where he was assigned to the USS Remington as the ship's helmsman. In the 48 years since, he has served on several starships, been promoted to the rank of Captain, and been awarded the Christopher Pike Medal of Valor, the Starfleet Silver Palm, and the Starfleet Medal of Honor. After a brief retirement, Captain Murali returned to Starfleet at the age of 70 in 2371 to command his third starship, the USS Babel.

Six years out of the Academy, Jessica was considered to be a rising star in Starfleet, but just as she was slated to take over as the First Officer of a new ship, she found herself unexpectedly transferred to a science vessel, far from the core of the Federation and any sign of a promotion.
