their new home stands on land owned by muse b, a wealthy widower some years older (forties), hose reserved manner, difficult reputation, and shadowed past (wife's death, his withdrawal from society, a daughter that fell into scandal?) make him an uneasy figure - and yet one who seems simply enchanted by muse a - whether out of admiration or loneliness, he becomes increasingly determined to secure her hand.
but when muse c, muse a's childhood companion and first love (twenties), gets in touch after years serving some years in the military and learns what has become of her family, old feelings resurface almost at once. he offers what help he can, and with it comes all the warmth she thought she had lost. yet his renewed attentions puts him at odds with muse b, whose interest in muse a is anything but casual, and whose fortune offers the greatest security of all.
love triangle, idea two: muse a is the daughter of a moderately wealthy and well-connected family who has long been raised with the understanding that she will one day marry (however much she protested that it wasn't her own choice) to muse b - a peer in the house of lords, only a few years her senior, whose title and standing in society make him an undeniably suitable match. though the arrangement has always been more expectation than romance, muse b is earnest in his efforts to build something real between them rather than simply claim what has long been promised.
but as the understanding between them begins to move to something more family, on a trip to london, muse c appears in muse a's orbit - the half-acknowledged bastard son of a viscount, raised on the edges of high society. intelligent, sharp-tongued, and determined to forge his own name in politics, muse c has more radical views on class, power, and even the position of women - which intrigues muse a greatly.
caught between muse b, the man she has always been expected to marry and who is trying his best to earn it, and muse c, the man who awakens her curiosity, muse a finds herself torn between obligation and temptation.
pairing idea one: (adultery is suggested here but does not have to be a theme) muse a, born to comfort but disillusioned with the marriage market after too many disappointments, is encouraged by her family to seek a respectable position rather than accept a match that now may not come. she becomes governess in the household of muse b, an older titled gentleman whose home is marked either by a long-cold marriage or the lingering shadow of a dead wife. what begins as mutual regard deepens with dangerous speed: she finds in him a depth of feeling and loneliness, and he, in turn, becomes increasingly unable to hide how he is drawn to her. within the confines of his household, affection turns to intimacy, before a line is crossed the neither of them know how to walk back.

pairing idea three: muse a is the middle daughter of a wealthy family, long accustomed to being overlooked in favour of a prettier elder sister and a younger one still indulged by everyone around her. clever, and quietly rebellious in ways small enough to escape serious notice, she has learned to keep most of herself. but when muse b arrives as the estate's new stablehand - energetic and far less deferential to her than anyone else in her world - their brief exchanges gradually become something more. what begins as private understanding deepens into a secret romance neither of them can afford. for muse b, whatever his history, stands too far beneath her for any attachment to be tolerated; and for muse a, the risk is not merely scandal, but the loss of family, standing, and future.
