Run.

A simple word that I try to repeat over and over inside my head.

Don't let them catch you.

Easier said than done. I'm going by foot, they're going by horse, we know how this will end.

Escape.

I make a quick turn right and force my tired legs to keep pushing forward.

Only a bit more.

I can hear the dogs closing in, I can feel the horses running behind me. Would I make it home on time? My children are waiting, my wife is waiting, and I need to get to them.

I keep running towards my goal, another quick turn, another bite I barely avoided. I can feel the dogs' breath closing in, the galloping of the horses reminding me I'm not welcome here. But why?

Why was I not welcomed in my own home anymore? I still remember the time I chose the forest as my home, a quiet and calm place. Somewhere I could make a home for my family. I remember the stream, running wildly while giving us water to survive. I remember the berries, how we could enjoy their sour and sweet flavor without a worry. I remember the hunting, running wild in the forest, hunting down the food for another day, sneaking in the darkness to get food for the night. I remember escaping, too, the glimpse of death I've had against wolves and other predators. Yet, I could've never prepared for this.

I feel my legs give in as I fall face-first to the ground. A small thud follows as my vision becomes blurry. I know I need to keep moving, I know I have to get up, but I've been running too much already. I'm too tired.

The dogs come, and all I can do is simply close my eyes.

I only remember the pain through the bites, wishing for my family to stay hidden while I endured the torment. Wishing these predators would never find them.

"We got the fox."

I turned my head, barely enough to see a red coat and a smug grin on the man who had spoken. Another man calmed the dogs and took them away, harshly. He grabbed me by the tail and showed me off to the others. If I'd known it would end like this, maybe I would've chosen the wolves.
