History: Emilia was born as the eldest child to a middle class family. Nestled in the urban edge of New York, everyone mostly kept to themselves and focused on their day to day activities. Emilia helped take care of her three younger siblings, two boys and one girl, while her parents both worked. The economic recession hit her family hard and her parents struggled to keep up with bills and the mortgage. Emilia did what she could but they were forced to leave her childhood home when she was sixteen and move into a smaller home that was shared with another family. It wasn't ideal, but her parents made it work the best that they could. As hard as they worked to keep the truth from Emilia, she knew that her parents were struggling financially and she desperately wanted to find a way to help them.
It started as odd jobs here and there to whomever would accept her. Delivering newspapers, taking orders at fast food restaurants, anything that would give her something to save in hopes of moving out on her own. If she could remove herself from the situation that was one less mouth they would have to feed. Things seemed to work until she turned nineteen and graduated high school. Taking two years off, she focused on trying to find a job but few places would take her and instead favored foreign work as it was cheaper.
This was when her parents encouraged her to go back to school, to go into a field that might give her the tools she needed to be successful. That was a great idea, in theory, but where would she get the money? Dozens of pamphlets littered her bed as she tried to figure out a school that she could afford with her minor salary. Accepting money from her parents was a nonstarter. Becoming annoyed with the struggle, she decided to take a walk in hopes of clearing her head. Should she take out a loan? Who would give a young adult that much money anyway? It was sure as hell not going to be a bank. As if the sky heard her struggles and wanted to make matters worse, it opened up to release a torrent of rain down upon her. Soaked, Emilia darted down an alleyway in hopes of finding shelter until the rain stopped. It was here that she stumbled upon a tragically injured cat. The animal's back legs had been crushed by what seemed to be a nearby rock and it was left to slowly die in the darkness. Horrified, Emilia began to panic. She couldn't just leave the poor thing but what was she to do? Terrified, she moved to try and pick the injured creature up but as her slender fingers made contact with the wet mass of fur, a brilliant surge of power felt like it flowed through her and into the cat. Cracking bones and repairing flesh was all Emilia could ear and see as the cat's legs began to return to the way they had once been all the while the street lamps that lined her way began to burst into thousands of shards of glass.
It didn't take long for the cat to slowly get back onto its feet and bolt off, leaving Emilia more horrified than she had been when she found the wounded animal. What had just happened? Thankfully she didn't have to wait long for answers as on her walk back home she was approached by a man who offered her the truth behind her fears. Magic. But magic wasn't real, right? Nothing beyond parlor tricks and mirrors. Yet this man spoke of a school which could teach her how to harness that raw skill and form it into a talent. Emilia rejected him at first, calling him crazy, but she changed her mind when he made her an offer she couldn't refuse. Free lodging, money for groceries, living expenses, and tuition through a scholarship; it was better than she could have imagined. This was the solution to all her problems! Crazy as it sounded, this could be her ticket out of poverty and the tool she needed to help her family once and for all. With some hesitation she accepted the invitation and made arrangements to leave for school the following morning.
