Introduction
Tobias Novakovik was born in America, on Earth, and grew into a quiet boy. He was not withdrawn so much as selective, keeping his words and his company for the few he counted as friends or family and offering the rest of the world a polite, level silence. Everyone called him Toby, and those who earned the name knew a warmer person behind it.
From his earliest years he was fascinated by firearms, and the fascination had the weight of a calling. Old black powder pieces that still spoke through burning chemical propellant held him as completely as the newer weapons that fired energy and light, and he devoured everything written about them, from mechanisms and ballistics to the long lineage of killing tools. At twelve he badgered his father until the man gave in and taught him to shoot. The boy learned with an unnatural speed, and his marksmanship soon outran his years, steady and exact in a way that unsettled the adults watching him. Before long he turned from the rifle to the harder, closer disciplines of the martial arts.
It surprised no one when he enlisted as a Marine in the Alliance, just as his family left Earth behind for the colony of New Dawn. For three years he served with the quiet diligence of a man who treats every task as procedure, rising to the rank of N7 and becoming one of the Alliance's most valuable assets. Then came a shore leave at New Dawn, a few days of peace among the people he loved, and the peace did not last. A fleet of Batarian slavers fell on the colony out of the dark.
Tobias fought his very best. Everything the N7 program had taught him, he spent in those hours: the tactics, the discipline, the cold arithmetic of terrain and time. What had been a scattered planetary defense force, men and women who had never expected to hear the word
war spoken in earnest, became a line under his command, and for a while that line held. But the slavers were too many, and the defenders were too few. They bled the Batarians where they could and pulled whatever captives they could reach back from the dark, and it was never enough against the numbers coming down on them. One by one they fell, killed or dragged away in chains, until Tobias alone remained, too badly wounded to lift a weapon. He could only lie there and watch as his family was gunned down in front of him, and then the dark took him too, and he passed out.
The Alliance Quick Reaction Force arrived two days later, which was fast for the distance they had crossed, and still not fast enough. The colony they found was a silent one. Most of its people had been carried off, and those who remained were corpses lying where they had fallen. Among them lay a single survivor, alive by nothing but miracle, breathing in a place where breath had no business continuing.
Two weeks after he recovered, he resigned. Then Tobias Novakovik went off the grid, as if the galaxy had swallowed him.
Five months later, a private military company called the Seventh Pillar appeared out of the silence, led by an enigmatic figure who went only by Gabriel. They struck Batarian slavers wherever they could be found and tore the chains from those the slavers held.

Appearance
His hair is black as pitch and worn long, falling in loose, ragged strands that brush the nape of his neck. A heavy fringe drapes across his forehead and sweeps over one side of his face, so that half of it sits in permanent shadow, as if the dark had claimed that side and never given it back. He has a sharp jawline and the sunken, quiet look of a man who has gone too long without ease. His eyes is a pale, steel grey, half lidded and utterly composed, and it watches the world with a calm so complete that it feels less like peace than like something deliberately carried. A small stud glints at one ear, the only ornament he allows himself.
He often wears long sleeved clothing to cover the scars on his body.
Personalities
Tobias had always been quiet and reserved. He never spoke needlessly, and when he did, he went straight to the point and trimmed away everything that did not carry weight. How much of him a person met depended on who they were. Strangers received the economy of his words and little else, but to those he counted as friends or family he was a different man, warmer and unhurried. He would trade mundane talk with them for as long as they liked and listen to them speak about anything at all, even when the hours could have been spent elsewhere, because to him those hours were never wasted.
The raid on New Dawn took that warmth and put a wall around it. He came out of the smoke more closed off and more detached than before, and the months that followed finished the work. Building the Seventh Pillar from nothing and then waging a private war against the slavers wore him down to something colder still. Slowly, almost without notice, the signs of lost empathy began to show. He felt no remorse for what he did to the Batarians, or to any pirate who crossed his path, and the absence troubled no one as much as it should have, least of all him.

Abilities, Skills, and Weapons
As an N7, Tobias proved himself more than capable wherever combat was involved. His accuracy placed him among the top ranks, and his CQB was lethal enough to trust in a real fight, a product of the years he had spent on the martial arts before the Alliance ever put a rifle in his hands. He had earned the equivalent of a black belt in several of them: Muay Thai, Silat, Bak Mei Kung Fu and Systema. The mastery showed in how he moved, economical and unhurried, ending a fight by the shortest road available.
Those skills drew the attention of the Headhunters, a clandestine company within the Alliance military that worked in the dark places no one acknowledged. Their purpose was to slip into hostile territory and remove High Value Targets, and every member was an N7 who had survived at least two or three assigned training missions.
Tobias was also a savant in military technology, and the Seventh Pillar carried his work with it into every engagement. Most of the company's equipment was something he had reinvented himself. His weapons did not match the penetrating power of Eezo-based firearms, but once they broke through an enemy's kinetic barrier they dealt far greater damage, and they were built for the moment that barrier failed.
