  • Jocelyn convincing Adrick to ferry her around (Danum and Trena, she meets some of the crew) and agrees to have dinner with Captain and sleep on his couch
  • After a day of annoyance, Jocelyn reveals herself to not be noble blood and Adrick cools off/starts to enjoy her company. She meets Wyn, Kerina, and Nevaro.
  • Trena - Jocelyn finds Montague - gets logs and a bad mood from being called a murderer by Captain Loris. Returns to CdL and gets into a fight with Adrick (he's worried she's come home late and his middleman never showed up)
  • Between Trena and Donsti - storm, weather delays journey. Bonding experience. Adrick finds out Jocelyn is good for something other than money
  • Donsti - Jocelyn hears of Adrick's alter ego and a few others who could have been hired by the Old Gull who is responsible for Montague theft, Adrick learns from Lefty there is a Jocelyn Byron in polite society, the Commanders' orphaned daughter but it doesn't come into play until after the brawl.
  • Bar brawl? Adrick gets hurt, Jocelyn tends to him and more is revealed about her/him to each other like Jocelyn's orphaned past and Adrick connects the dots that she's the commander's daughter.
    • She reveals that its hard to talk about herself, growing up during the war, and she doesn't know if her handler will kill her if she doesn't get the mission done

  • End of day three to Notenau, Kerina teaches Jocelyn to fire a gun and Adrick hijacks lesson as an excuse to make Jocelyn uncomfortable again
  • Day four, they reach Notenau
    • Jocelyn
    • Adrick opens the chest to find Bonacorsi's plans and discovers:
      • Record of Bonacorsi's plans and progress for starting a war with Pentakot
      • LD, sometimes D, assassinations (list of diplomats/politicians they've gone after)
      • Pentakot has weak replacements from his work that will fold when war strikes and their house of cards will fall
      • Bonacorsi was negotiating with kingdom on far side of the sea for their support in the coming weeks
      • Arkon King will be poisoned at the Peace Summit and Pentakot will be framed
      • Yew tree seal
    • Jocelyn arrives back at the ship and Adrick can tell something is worrying her. They have another sweet moment. Adrick hugs her, she says its nice, and Adrick tucks her into bed.
  • Next day, Calder catches Adrick with his shirt off leaning over Jocelyn in his bed, word slowly spreads around the ship they slept together.
    • Adrick shows Nevaro all the gold is present from Jocelyn and she's not looking to swindle them.
    • Later that day, word from Calder gets out and gets to Kerina which Nevaro overhears and Kerina doesn't buy Jocelyn's attempts at telling her nothing happened between her and the Captain.
    • Nevaro throws Adrick from quarterdeck in blind rage and tries to rally crew against the Captain/Jocelyn which doesn't work
    • Runs at Jocelyn who dodges expertly out of the way. Adrick, wounds having opened, stops Nevaro from killing one of them and issues a punishment of night watch until further notice
    • Later that day, Jocelyn checks up on Adrick.
      • She asks him what he meant about "having her under control" which turns into Adrick saying he can't control her trouble but he can control her through his flirtatious touches.
      • Riles her up and intends on leaving her with an almost-kiss to the lips saying he doesn't sleep with his benefactors but sees that she wanted the kiss and steps back to her. Finally, they have their passionate kiss
      • When questioned why he didn't walk away, Adrick tells her he didn't want to in a poetic way
      • Jocelyn reveals she isn't a good lair and is glad he didn't walk away and she is in fact Jocelyn Byron, daughter of Thomas (Arkon Commander) and Eloise, confirming what Lefty told Adrick in Donsti, and Jocelyn Roy daughter of a Huntsman from the Tails River Valley
      • Two discuss what to do about Nevaro now that they -have- done something wrong. Adrick brings up a Stone Oath (blood on stone, make oath, throw into sea as a promise

  • Kerina and Jocelyn share a hearty moment together and Jocelyn reveals that things with Adrick are complicated but feelings are involved
  • Adrick and Jocelyn have a great few days together until the second to final night where the revelry from the knife throwing competition has them almost sleeping together. Adrick, upon starting to take off her pants, finds the scars.
    • Two of them end up cuddling and sharing stories about their youth/family together and fall asleep in each others arms
  • Port Silas:
    • Sweet little parting of ways between Adrick and Jocelyn
    • Jocelyn makes her way up to the estate and manages to infiltrate it to case the place, figure out the situation.
    • Meanwhile, Adrick waits for Old Gull to contact him and grows more upset/wanting to be rid of the burden of the chest
      • Finds himself on his own having to figure things out. Frustrated, he eventually remembers Lefty's verbal riddle from the lighthouse, he finds the manor with seaglass lamps in a quiet place. Goes to find in town with Nevaro and by nightfall finds it and demands to be let in
    • Jocelyn bides her time til the meet up at the estate. Can't find documents and considers killing benefactor.
    • Adrick is finally gained access to estate and goes to drop off the box and get his money so he can wash his hands of the whole business, Nevaro there as backup.
    • Adrick is brought up to the employer's office on the upper floor
    • Lady Death waits for them to be in the same room, a two birds, one stone situation
    • Despite the Cormorant's mask, Jocelyn isn't fooled and she is tripped up and hesitates long enough
    • Adrick opens contents of safe and demands answers/explaination from the employer
    • Left reeling, Lady Death steps forward to finish the job, the employer either takes it in stride, having expected the famed assassin to be sent after them, or accusing the Cormorant of having led her to him
    • Either way, the employer isn't left living for long, leaving Jocelyn to deal with Adrick
    • Adrick has already had his suspicions and recognizes her bit by bit
    • Jocelyn starts demanding why he had opened the box (having convinced herself that she could have let him go if he didn't know what it was exactly that he had stolen), but Adrick only counters with a demand that she take off her own mask so he could see her and know once and for all
    • In the end, Jocelyn only outs herself by saying his name and they're left in a bit of a stale mate, neither one of them willing to make a move against the other
    • Eventually, Jocelyn makes to leave after only threatening Adrick, but the shouting/commotion/ general amount of time it has all taken, Nevaro comes to see what the trouble is
    • Nevaro comes onto the scene, seeing one dead guy, Adrick with his mask off, and a shadowy figure perched in the window, so our impulsive, mildly violent first mate pulls a pistol and clips Jocelyn in the arm before she can get away and she falls out the window
    • Adrick panics a bit, finds that Jocelyn hadn't been able to recover to catch herself and was knocked out on the ground, two stories below
  • Adrick and Nevaro take her back to the ship and throw her in the brig while they try to figure out what the hell to do with her
    • While she is in jail, Adrick accuses her of being in on killing the King and Jocelyn is genuinely confused/knows nothing about the killing of the king plot
    • Adrick has a hard time figuring out ust how much she lied to him about, claiming she didn't want a war while actively making it possible for the next one to kick off
    • Believes her in the end (some angst) because of how she reacts to Bonacorsi's plans (its clear she doesn't know what she was doing which fuels his hate for the crown)
  • Ship attacked by pirates, Jocelyn escapes jail and takes down 15 men on the opposing vessel to the shock of Adrick and his crew. Saves Nevaro with a pistol shot but he still doesn't want to like her for saving his life
  • CdL needs repairs, sailors injuries need tending to (esp Jocelyn's leg), and sea burials take place/ general putting the ship back together after the attack and looting the pirate vessel
  • Adrick finally gets to question Jocelyn now that she is forthcoming with her explanations/not hiding who she is anymore (does he know everything about her now, how did she come back alive from her onslaught)
  • Nevaro contacts Pentakot when they left Port Silas, a move that will come back to haunt him but he, at the past moment, keeps her identity a secret and turns a new leaf after seeing how much Adrick cares about her/her him
  • Back to Donsti/Ilora
    • Jocelyn leads them to secure spot by a favored tree outside of the city she knows Thomas will remember them riding to
    • Officers stay on CdL making final repairs and preps
    • Adrick ventures into Ilora and castle (with Jocelyn's tips) and meets with Commander, convinces him to meet Jocelyn in designated spot
      • Thomas made a point to dance with Jocelyn at court events. Her favorite one of them the Rivolian Waltz. Commander always danced with her despite getting dizzy
      • Adrick has a "I'm telling the truth" item but Thomas claims he could have looted her body, Adrick instead uses a backup story that only her and Thomas shared
    • Bonacrosi not around
    • Jocelyn smuggled back into city and staying in her suite
      • Meeting Eloise
      • Thomas brings them dinner, they plot
    • Adrick breaks into Bonacorsi's office and looks for incriminating evidence about the plot they can use. comes back with nothing
  • Nevaro's message about Lady Death received by Pentakot, ship is stopped but he changes his mind at the last moment, claiming he has no idea what they're talking about
  • Breda Conference
    • Jocelyn hesitant to go around without disguise b/c Bonacorsi's vigilant spies
    • Adrick sent to run errands for them because no one knows him (uniforms from Thomas, etc)
    • Simone and Henri capture Adrick while out on patrol, demanding to know where Jocelyn is (Bonacorsi hired them and told them Jocelyn went awol)

Trena
Waited for Old Gull (contact) on top of a guild house
Purple writing on a small scroll which had come into his possession shortly after he'd come back from a few of the shops with provisions for the crew/himself
No one showed up

#105
Hadn't heard from Old Gull contact. He left a letter behind indicating their travels toward Donsti, Pilova, and Port Silas, but it was never like him to kiss a meeting or not send a note by the unerbelly to indicate his lack of attendance.

#115
Thinking about his next moves should the Old Gull not find his note so he could receive payment for his job

#139
Still hasn't heard from OG, if only he'd show himself

#141
Triangular note sent to him by Lefty via a homing pigeon when they got close to Donsti shore. Quickly scrawled riddle from Lefty? They meet at the lighthouse. Adrick tries to understand what happened with Trena and the Old Gull. He got scared of Arkon flags/ARA Montague. He fled to military port of Port Silas for safety. Left paper trail for Adrick to follow.

#143
Lefty's speech about Old Gull which Adrick interrupts:
"By the canals where secrets flow,
The horizon blazed a gold and blue
When the hawk's gaze pierced through
The Old Gull swiftly flew

Where iron walls and soldiers stand
By the sea, on guarded land
Seek the place where silence reigns
And secrets hide in shadowed plains

To the manor where the sea lanterns glow
In the night, where whispers grow-"

#267
Not sure the Old Gull was still alive, Adrick following his breadcrumbs and the ARA Montague. Tired of not knowing what's going on, he opens the chest and finds the information on Arkon/Pentakot and the Yew Tree. Benefactor goes through Old Gull.
After a while, he made his decision. He wasn't sure if the Old Gull was still alive and Adrick was tired of following the breadcrumbs. Patience was something he never excelled in and after careful examination of the seals, he devised his plan to open it and see what all the fuss was about. He did not want to admit that a small, small, part of him was doing it for Jocelyn's safety although it was more subconscious than a conscious thought. Her and her family lived in Ilora and should these documents be of a negative nature, it could jeopardize their peace and lifestyle.

His heart pounded as he stared at the wax-sealed box from the rich glossy wood of the box itself to the intricate and dark red-rust colored seal that reminded him of dried blood. He would find out what was in this box and get his payment and accept nothing less. He would have all day to figure out and read whatever was inside. At least he hoped so. If history was anything to go off of, she would be gone until dinnertime but it was good to be safe.

First, he had to start with a negative clay mold of the seal as a precautionary measure, allowing him to recreate the seal if it were to break during his experiment. He doubted the Old Gull would care about the color of the wax as long as it was similar in shade but only that it remained unbroken. It's not like he knew what the fleet Captains used for their mail.... unless -- no, Adrick wouldn't entertain such thoughts as he went about creating the mold after gathering the necessary materials in town.

Once back in his cabin behind a locked door, he heated and pressed malleable clay to the seal so it created a perfect imprint. All the intricate details and everything retained as he held the clay to the seal in order to accurately capture everything. Then he moved to the box, the thin bladed knife warmed in the flickering candle at his side just enough so he could work the seal almost effortlessly from the wood without breaking it as he worked with steady hands. Once and then again on either side and, after wiping the sweat from his brow, Adrick carefully picked the lock and opened the chest.

Pages upon pages of folded and stamped documents nearly reached the top of the box's inside lip. Whoever the author was and whatever these pages were, they had an air of importance around them that Adrick immediately felt. Another part of him wanting to shut the box and not gain any unwanted information. What ifs popping up in the sailor's mind as he looked to the window that looked over the town. It had to be something these notes were saying that was worth the coin he was going to be paid, should be paid, in a matter of days. So he dug them all out, made sure the door was locked, and went to reading and taking notes in his notebook for what he read.

He knew that he couldn't take the letters with him so this was his one opportunity to read them and understand what they were trying to say. Some of the pages on official letterhead-looking documents while others were notes that had been rolled up or folded for ease of transport. The longer Adrick read, the more invested for the documents were integral at telling a story that had not occurred yet; the assassination of the Arkon King at the peace summit.

Not that it affected Adrick but the implications of such an event would no doubt throw them and their long time enemy into warfare. The very same event that brought Jocelyn Roy to Commander Byron as an orphan. They were at peace and someone, whoever the yew tree seal bearer was, wished to crumble all of it and point the finger at Pentakot.

Through all the briefs, confidential reports, and memorandums, something stuck out to him that made his throat dry. An assassin, called LD or D (perhaps the author simply forgot the L on mistake but it was in too many places to not be deliberate) had already taken out countless key players from ministers to ambassadors, their replacements all puppets for whoever the puppet master was and the detailed web they had spun against the ignorant world. All the while, the evidence was right here in his grasp...At least whatever much he could understand and what he managed to read between the very thick lines of the bureaucratic language and coded names.

D.

That nickname had been used before for Jocelyn Roy by her friend Simone. She had claimed it meant Duchess but something about its familiarity kept jabbing him in the side. Was Jocelyn Roy an assassin? She was, after all, going after some Pentakot bloke with little to no explanation for her reasons. But, after experiencing and being orphaned by the war, wouldn't she want them to stay at peace? Being from Ilora, and furthermore being the Commanders' daughter, he could only imagine the loyalty she had to the Arkon crown. Still the mystery that surrounded her every action... then there was the fact that she adjusted and shot that bag of flour in the dead center on one of her first tries holding a weapon had to mean that she was versed in how to aim a --

No. She is not an assassin and that was final. Adrick ordered the documents in the way he found them and shut the box a little too forcefully. How could he sit here and even entertain such a ludacris idea was beyond him. Pushing his chair back, he started to pace but this time, his nervousness rolled off his body as he drifted between the sea of doubt and the shores of his reality. He knew he needed more evidence before jumping to conclusions of his own, yet the thoughts just kept cropping up in his mind.

Bonacorsi papers:
confirmations on who she was killing, politicians, merchants. The truth had been twisted for Jocelyn, bonacorsi telling her that the people she was beinf sent to kill were trying to prepare Pentakot for war. the letters, however, claim these were people pentakot would have needed to protect itself-- politicians in pentakot who would have pushed to maintain peace when they get accused of assassinating the king of Arkon. then of course there are the dirty little deals Bonacorsi made in order to gain his allies-- take out merchants who would be competitive in the market so his allies would be able to get all the profit when war broke out, promising to sell weapons and supplies cheap to Arkon while selling at a steep price to Pentakot
Mostly nasty little promises and trades made so that when hell broke lose, Bonacorsi was sure to have support in pushing for war so Pentakot could be decimated.

Jocelyn is the assassin sent after him for stealing the papers. Knows that she was a pawn in Bonacorsi's plans.

Name: Jocelyn Byron, formerly Jocelyn Roy

Alias: Lady Death

Age: 25

Hair: Deep chestnut

Eyes: Mostly an icy blue with a brown patch in the right iris

Physical Appearance: 5'6, lithe build that is tempting in the trappings of her gender and inconspicuous in the trappings of her trade

Scars: thin, three centimetre scar on back of left shoulder (stab wound); a collection of small scars on and around her left elbow (bite marks from attack dog); long, ropey scar starting at the dip of her waist and curving over her right hip to her back (narrowly avoided gutting from a sword); starburst scar on right shin (puncture from broken bone)

Language(s): Common, passable and fleeting knowledge of the local languages where she is assigned on missions to better blend in

Sexual Orientation: Straight

Weapons on her: At any given moment, at least two small daggers, and sharp hair pins that will do in a pinch

Weapons in her wheelhouse: Her common upbringing made her skill with a bow and traps, as well as lethal talent with knives. Her adoptive father trained her to use swords in various fighting styles, and her current profession has extended her knowledge significantly in throwing knives and darts, poisons, and generally honed her body into a weapon in and of itself

Magical Abilities: Unknown

Family: Her biological parents were killed in the last war against Pentakot, shortly after which she was adopted by Commander Thomas Byron and his wife Eloise.

Background: Born to a weaver and a woodsman in the village of South Bend, Jocelyn had a quiet early life with her parents. They were not wealthy by any means, but were rarely left wanting, kept paid and fed by her parents' efforts. From a young age, she was introduced to both her mother and father's trades, assisting her mother with spinning yarn and weaving, while accompanying her father into the surrounding forests, both gathering resources and hunting wild game. Of the two, Jocelyn found herself drawn to the woods more than anything, the rich air and quiet, the satisfying knowledge of where to find mushrooms and herbs, the awareness that she needed to engage during a hunt.

They led a peaceful life, and it was easy for Jocelyn to be oblivious about the goings on around the kingdom, the war and chaos that had not yet reached her village aside from the gossip and growing fear she would hear from her neighbours. The war was as real to her as a bedtime story. At least, until it made its very real presence known while on a hunt with her father.

A contingent of soldiers had been cutting through the land to join with a larger army. They had not moved delicately, not bothered to conceal their presence, and Jocelyn and her father had seen them coming long before the father and daughter could draw their attention. At the time, Jocelyn had been more displeased by their interrupted hunt than aware of why it was significant that the soldiers did not wear Arkon Blue, but she slipped away into the brush as her father instructed, kept low and silent as three soldiers approached.

What followed, both in the coming minutes and coming days are memories that Jocelyn can not easily access, both subconsciously and due to her intentional repression of what she had witnessed, what she herself had done. But there are glimpses that still haunt her: her father's blank stare up at the canopy of the forest, his life bleeding out of him from the slash at his throat; the mad dash she had made when shock had released its hold on her limbs long enough to go to her village only to find its charred remains; the days she had spent following her clumsy prey, observing the camps they set; the sound of men choking on their own blood; the blood that coated her hands as she knelt in the middle of the silent camp, utterly numb to what she had done.

By the time a heavy coat was being wrapped around her shoulders, Jocelyn had been too tired, too empty to object as she was led away from the small camp into a much larger one. She noted the blue uniforms, made herself sip the tea that a kind, wary eyed man gave her, asking for her name, her story. To his credit, the man was patient, fitting for someone of his rank, she would soon learn. Commander Byron watched over her personally, keeping her away from the curious eyes and whispers in his war camp before he sent her off to the capital, to his wife. The girl had seen enough of the war to last her a lifetime, what she needed now was peace, ease.

Eloise was at more of a loss than her husband when Jocelyn arrived with little more than the poorly fitting clothes of a soldier on her back and a blank face. She would write to Thomas, suggesting they send her to a temple or an orphanage that was better equipped to deal with the children orphaned by war, but the Commander was adamant. The connection was slow to form, but in the months that passed, there was a delicate kinship between the child and the lady, the older woman coaxing some words from the girl, getting preferences on clothes, sweets, music. By the time the war at last came to a close and the Commander returned, there was no question about Jocelyn remaining in their care.

She was raised privately, often away from the other children at court, if only to avoid the ridicule regarding her origins and her peculiar behaviour. Her upbringing was an odd continuation of what she'd had in South Bend, learning the gentle, feminine hobbies from her adoptive mother when she was not catching up on the education she had lacked in her forest village, while Thomas nurtured her appreciation for the outdoors, taking her riding, hiking, teaching her to swim, and eventually, teaching her how to fight.

He had been hesitant about it at first; in fact, Thomas had kept her well away from the royal barracks where he worked, away from the soldiers and the sound of clashing, sparring weapons. But Jocelyn had been drawn to it, watched the movement of the blades, the precise footwork practised in the training ring. When she was 15, Thomas at last asked if she would like to try.

It was like a missing piece finally being nudged into place. There was a certain fluidity, a meditative quality to training that cleared Jocelyn's mind, put it at peace. Working alongside Thomas and the soldiers under his command felt natural and slowly, finally, she began to feel like she fit.

But the life of a soldier would have been wasted on her, or at least that was the opinion of Efraim Bonacorsi. The king's spymaster had long been curious about the Commander's ward, had heard the stories of how she'd been found in a camp full of dead men, uninjured herself yet covered in blood. The girl was a little monster, a she-demon that Lady Eloise was parading around in fine clothes, a quiet pretty little thing that contained such capacity for death. And when it appeared the girl was not only skilled but impressionable, following the orders of the Commander without question, Bonacorsi coveted the loyal soldier for himself, though a soldier wasn't quite was he was looking for. What he wanted was a tool, a weapon, an assassin, and if there was anything that could be said about the spymaster, it was that he was very good at getting what he wanted.
