Space. Where the closest thing to a law is your own moral compass.
Due to the many regions owned by various factions and races, a central police force has never been implemented. Without a single force keeping order, space piracy and other criminal networks have taken. Most factions and races have given up trying to stop piracy, choosing to help them so they don't get targeted.

So, this galaxy-spanning adventure needs technology. How do people travel across this vast universe?
Well, that depends on your wealth. The simple, cheap method is a Skip Drive.
A Skip Drive creates a small localised field of exotic energy. This exotic energy dispers through a network of tubes throughout the ship to form a bubble. This bubble is unstable, and defies the laws of physics. As a result, a simple ignition of the thrusters on a ship can send it hurtiling at great speeds, moving faster than light. This has some diadvantages though. Due to the instability, the range of a Skip Drive is limited. Often requiring two or three jumps to move from system to system. A standard Skip Drive has a recharge of twenty seconds. However, this can change depending on model, and state of the drive. Another diadvantage is that because they create these exotic fields, they are easily tracked. Also, a Skip Drive cannot launch, or land too close to a large gravitational field. So a ship with a Skip Drive needs to jump in at the edge of a system and move in at normal speeds.
For characters that are a little wealthier, a Hyperspace Generator is a better option.
A Hyperspace generator works by creating a small tear in the fabric of space. It does this by creating a highly localised point of gravity. By entering this tear, the ship enters a stream of energy that can propell the ship at insane speeds. The Hyperspace Generator has near unlimited range. Since it techniquilly operates outside normal space, it cannot be easily tracked, but the exit tear must be planned before the jump is made, so people can detect imbound ships.
An alternative to the Hyperspace Generator is the Tele-Field Emitter.
A Tele-Field Emitter works using technology similar to teleporters on large ships. A field is emitted around a ship, and the ship is scanned and is everything on board. Then the field breacks down the ship into digital data, and that is sent faster than light to the desired location where the ship is reassembled. This is the most stealthy drive as it doesn't involve tearing a hole in space, or exotic matter.
For captains of a fleet, a Wormhole Creator might be more your speed.
Using a combination of Skip Drive and Hyperspace Generator technology, The Wormhole Creator does exactly as the name would suggest. A ship fires out several drones that form a ring. Each drone is equipped with a store of exotic matter. Each one fires inwards where a gravity field is projected by a ship. The combination of exotic matter and a high gravity field creates a worm hole. The drones are then sent through to secure an opening, while the ship that created it can move through. This also allows ally ships to move through the same wormhole.
The most expensive is a Fold Drive.
No one is really sure how a Fold Drive works, but it literally fold the universe. This makes a ship able to cover a large distance very quickly. Normally, such a fold can only be detected if you are activly looking for it. Functionally it works the same as a Wormhole Creater, but it is more accurate, and puts less strain on the ships moving through.
So those are the main Faster Than Light devices.
I might make more things for other categories like weapons and shields if that's what you want. I'd prefer to leave the freedom to you though.
Until then, post if you're interested. Then put up a character sheet.

This one seems less developed but still appealing but same questions though:
  • What are the posting expectations? (Lenght, frequency, detail)
  • Freeform or system?
  • The setting is clear, but what kind of story are we looking to build? (Action, tactical, exploration, drama, romance)
  • The direction of the story? (Narrator/GM, shared narration, open)
  • Setting influence of the players? (Strict established, flexible established, flexible open, improv)
  • How many expected players? Single multi-character?
  • Character relative power level(s)? (clueless, novice, professional, specialist, action hero, super)
  • Is there a planned storyline or are we starting off with a bang and seeing where that takes us?
Sorry for all the questions but I want to make sure we have a compatible idea of gameplay so that the game doesn't die after a few posts.
