"...the savagery, the utter savagery, had closed round him,-- all that mysterious life of the wilderness that stirs in the forest, in the jungles, in the hearts of wild men. There's no initiation either into such mysteries. He has to live in the midst of the incomprehensible, which is also detestable. And it has a fascination, too, that goes to work upon him. The fascination of the abomination--you know. Imagine the growing regrets, the longing to escape, the powerless disgust, the surrender, the hate."

Whilst the views depicted in the Heart of Darkness are worthy to be condemned, they came about at a time and a place in which the world was an entirely different place - unexplored. Many parts of the world were unmapped and subject to mystery and fancy. Though often laced in racism and misinformation, stories of 'savage' tribes. The rapid expansion of global empires has effects that we are to this day still experiencing. At one point in time, people thought that humanity had progressed so far that nothing like this could ever happen again. Though, how many times in history has that been said?

When the earth slowly started to become uninhabitable; pestilence, famine, war, suffering --- overpopulation, the rich had taken to the moon and mars. Crude at first, the disconnect from the rich and the poor grew massively. The poor living on dying earth and the rich-looking down from the moon above.

This changed when ancient ruins were discovered on mars with technology in fact that changed everything. Some called it uplifting, others called it the Great Leap Forward, and some the harrowing. From this small mining group discovering these ruins, to them surrendering them to a group designated as terrorists by the governments of the world to the violent war that ensued that ravaged the world, with nuclear explosions, violent incursions, and uprisings --- no peace was made for nothing was left but ash and rubble, eventually silence. Though, many were able to flee. Brought to the vast docks of the moon itself. This terrorist group, or freedom fighters depending on who you would ask evacuated a number of people from every country on earth. Enough to serve their own ambitions. And they grew. From the moon, to mars, to her moons until, in ten years, thanks to the help of this foreign technology of a race-long fallen - the Yeda, they would discover more.

Whilst billions would waste away on Earth, billions took to the stars - a new cultural renaissance. Though what was life on a starship to feeling the kiss of a star? Fresh air and --- freeness?

Thirty years after the grand evacuation, the leader of these groups of bandits, or freedom fighters depending upon who you asked - announced something new, something special, something huge. More ruins had been found, and this technology was like nothing that had been seen before. The power to travel far into space, destinations previously thousands of light-years away? Weeks. And so humanity spread, until she discovered she was not alone.

And there started a new era of humanity, an era of greed, terror, and heroism.

Eighty years after the harrowing, some have returned to earth - but to the spacers, her influence had dwindled. Without firing a single shot, the governments of the earth surrendered to the spacers. And every year, hundreds of thousands of teenagers and young adults would be taken away, sometimes by force, to fulfill the destiny of humanity. To reach the starts. Often undergoing years of training, to what seemed to be like an endless supply of funding and then they would set out into the stars. To find a new planet to call their home and establish a colony, subservient to the new capital of man. Mars.

Pax Humana. Man Rules the Waves.

Many would not make it. Accidents. Pirates. Attacks --- the grand unknown.

This story would follow the latest group of settlers, from whatever background, ethnic origin and history as they are grouped together. Though their destination has not yet been chosen, their day of ascension draws near and soon enough, this ship of half a hundred people, twenty-five men, and twenty-five women will leave for the stars above.

There are a number of different sources of inspiration for this story, but one of them was the expanse of global empires. This is not something I glorify, simply ponder upon frequently, being from the global south myself. This period of history makes up one of the most interesting ones in human history. Whilst in a way, this story may be sorta glorified, of swashbuckling adventurers finding new worlds, I thought it was worth mentioning to anyone who noticed the themes related to colonisation in the background of this post.

----

On a OOC note.

- I am a male, in my twenties.

- The various types of activity, from several posts a day to once a week are all fine, but I would like to discuss it - simply because we can tailor the style of our story to be best suited - to see whether it should be action-packed, slow-burning or both!

- Whilst I do intend to play a number of different characters and exploring their side stories, I would like for there to be two "main" characters, at least from their own perspective.

- Whilst it may be secondary to the plot, I would like to write out the relationship between these two characters. How it happens is entirely debatable, and I would much rather it be natural rather than forced! But, there could be numerous interesting themes that could be explored on a lonely ship in space. Boredom, isolation, homesickness, sexual frustration. Whether it becomes a long-burning romance for the ages, or two bored members of the expedition decided to bump uglies on their trip, there are many ways this could be explored! Feel free to hit me with any ideas of your own.

- As people have taken issue with this in the past, I will play a POC. I am open to playing with characters of all the world's wonderful people - and in terms of ahem, keeping the gene pool diverse, it is likely many of these people groups will represent the cast of the ship and the various side characters.

- Third Person play.

- Some things I'm probably forgetting.

- Good chemistry. Between characters and us as writers! There is no shame if we do not match as writers, you are welcome to borrow this idea if you really like it but we didn't manage to get anywhere in our discussions!

- OOC chats. Let's talk, just about the story if you want but I don't mind small talk!

- Both of us leading the story. Sometimes, when you get a response and it is entirely in reaction to your own and doesn't really give you anything to progress on... Yeah. Let us both keep the ball rolling!

- Please PM me about this response and do not post on the thread. I like it that way anyway and it sorta tells me people have read beneath the plot XD. If you got a bit over-excited and jumped the gun, that's fine. Do mention it though!

- No Mary Sues and whatever. Give me angst, flawed characters, people who make mistakes --- I don't mind! You can be otherwise good, just human!

- I feel like there are certain things I do not need to mention. Nothing against the site rules. I don't mind if a fight between the crew and pirates ends up in a pretty nasty result, or a side-character goes in a way that is less than glorious. But in the bedroom? No thanks. Rough play is fine, but I wish for it all to be consensual. The good kind of rough. Any particular kinks, please ask!

- I'm not too into BDSM but I will play characters that are regarded as dominant. I don't wish for a typical dom/sub relationship though. I understand the gist of these themes, but it is not something that really needs to be considered. There are so many ways to explore a relationship!

- Generally, I'm looking for human characters but I am also interested in alien partners potentially, but I am boring enough to ask for them to be typical of human standards of beauty. No tentacles and slime. I generally would consider this to be best suited to be between two humans, but you can sell me an alien species. Space elves are also an easy way into my heart.

- This thread is rough, so I do apologise! Thank you for reading!
