The Dreamer Adrift
Hello and welcome to the Tales from Dreadholm interest thread! I'm glad you're here and I hope that you enjoy this introduction to a roleplay that I've been hankering to get started. Below you will find basic information about the setting, my ideas around character building, the anticipated tone of the story and some other useful information. If you have any questions, comments or concerns, feel free to post them below or direct them to my private messages. Now, without further ado, I welcome you to Tales from Dreadholm
Base Setting: Tales of Dreadholm is a tale of magic, otherworldly creatures, ghouls and magic users within a world that's equal parts grim and dark. As wonderful and diverse as the plentiful magics and mystical creatures are and exist in Dreadholm, there exists just as many devious and sinister magics and monsters that one would best not run afoul. While the foul works of dark mages, necromancers and summoners are nothing out of the ordinary in Dreadholm, a new dark tide has taken root in its deepest and darkest corners. Known to only to the select few, this new presence has come to be known as the Abyss Walkers. The Abyss Walkers are unique in their single minded purpose to uncover the true nature and power of the dark magics which run through Dreadholm. To dive headlong into the mysterious abyss and to dredge up and ultimately manifest a force far more potent than even the greatest magic users could only dream of. At this point, they have only glimpsed the depths and even so, magical creatures and half-breed monsters, those beings most susceptible to nefarious influence, have shown the impact of the Abyss, becoming contorted and twisted by the endless depths of corruption. And some, seduced by that power have become legion and thralls joined the Abyss Walkers in their single-minded pursuit. They must be stopped at any cost.
Base Plot: We are two members of Dreadholm's Magister Citadel who have been tasked with investigating and putting a stop to the Abyss Walkers.
Lore Building pt. 1 - The Magister Citadel: Dreadholm's Magister Citadel was conceived by a mere handful of the magically adept whose ambitions had far outstretched their individual power to attain. Thus, they forged an alliance and pooled their resources and power to doggedly pursue their thirst for knowledge. They would be henceforth known as The Founders. In but a few short years, The Founders became the foremost authority with respect to their disciplines. But as is the way in Dreadholm, as their power grew, so too did the animus and covetous intent of those who watched from hidden places. The Founders soon found themselves the targets of zealous cults, monsters, magic-twisted abominations and rival magisters. All driven by a lust for control of the magics developed by The Founders. Though swiftly dealt with initially, the tide of gnashing teeth, glinting blades, mutterings of foul incantations and the shuddering boom of spellcraft became so frequent and vicious, The Founders had little choice but to construct a mighty sanctuary, The Citadel. The next order was to recruit members whose power and aptitude could reduce their foes to piles of ash, bone and blood. And thus, Dreadholm's Magister Citadel was formed.
Since that time, countless decades of violence and the increasingly guarded pursuit of power has twisted the Dreadholm Magister Citadel into a truly brutal organization. One obsessed with secrets, devoted to an unending pursuit of magnificent and terrible power and eager to crush any perceived threats. Most of the Citadel's agents have not seen the face of The Founders or even heard a single order first hand. They are guided by dictation, scrolls passed down by those who have the distinction of hearing The Founders' hallowed words through great doors that haven't opened in over a century. Their mandate is absolute.
Character Building: I'm pretty flexible when it comes to creating your initial character and do not require a character sheet. I feel like character sheets can be a good reminder, but I don't want you to feel burdened by the constraints of something you think of one day but may want to adjust later. If you really want to draw one up to show me, that's fine. Just know that I'm partial to letting characters develop as the story progresses. I feel like it's more fun that way. Now, if you have questions about your character before we get started and would like my input, I'm more than happy to brainstorm with you. I suppose the only restriction is that your character is a member of Dreadholm's Magister Citadel.
Tone: When I've been imagining is this sort of gothic, grim-dark kind of deal. I feel like it would lend to the perceived urgency and tension of situations when the stakes, characters and plot points are informed by this kind of heavy storytelling. Also it makes the ambitions of the antagonists feel a bit more weighty.
The Magics of Dreadholm: I want to provide the most flexibility on this point. When thinking about your character and the kind of magic that they use, feel free to get creative. This means the type of magic your character specializes in/favors and also how they mean to cast it. Provided you can explain the system you use and can stick to it, I'll likely be fine with it. Also, while our characters are pitted against dark magics and such, that doesn't mean that you can't use them yourself or base your character in those sorts of roots.
Sex and Sexuality: Of course! Just know that this is a story driven RP. I'm not exactly sure which part of the forums this story is destined for, but I'm sure we can discuss that and make the appropriate determination.
Posting Frequency: I favor substance over speed. I would much rather you take your time and come out with a post that you're quite satisfied with than have you rush through your side of this joint narrative. So, if you're someone who digs writing multiple posts a day for one story, I'm not the partner for you.
If you have any questions, comments or concerns, please post them here or send me a PM. Looking forward to hearing from you!
