Back Story:

Gus never knew his real parents. They gave him up--left him in a basket infront of Saint Augustus Orphanage in the middle of the night. Nothing on the babe but a blanket and a note that simply said 'I'm sorry."

The nuns thought it to be a blessing, to have a child with unique gray eyes under their roof. They decided to name him Augustus (he would joke later that it was because the 'old ladies' couldn't think of anything at the moment because they indulged on the holy wine -- which earned him a ruler mark or two on the hands.)

Years passed, and so did other orphans. Gus didn't connect well with the children, simply because they came and went like the seasons. Why get attached if they never stayed? It never stopped him from staying active. He would sometimes play with the other children (only if the nuns forced him to), but mostly he would perform flips off the branches of one of the large oak trees in the field.

It wasn't until he was seven that his path crossed a unique couple. The wife, unable to have children of her own, took a special interest in Gus after seeing him flip and land gracefully. Vincent and Abigail Swann, two very talented acrobats in a travelling circus, adopted Gus and immediately brought him to his new home.

His father was one of the best acrobats in the world. So, he trained to follow the family tradition. Gus soon discovered how much he loved performing. After working the trapeze for the first time without falling, he looked at his mother, another skilled acrobat, and saw the smile on her face. It was one of pride. He felt proud to continue the family tradition…but something felt weird on the night of Friday, July 13th.

It was raining hard that night, and the circus tent was packed. Gus and his mother had been working so hard on this next trick; his mother would swing on the opposite trapeze, do a triple backward flip and Gus would catch her by her hands. It was a difficult trick, but with all the practice and training they did, he knew it could be done.

He did an easy flip onto his trapeze, hearing gasps and applause from the audience. He stood on his trapeze and looked at his mother. Her eyes locked onto his as she began to swing…and then the look of terror as the rope snapped.

She began to fall. Everything happened in slow motion around Gus. He leaped into the air, grabbed her by the waist, and then—

They were already on the ground. Ten feet from the trapeze area. There were gasps and murmurs filling the arena.

"He's one of them!"

"He's a FREAK!"

"Get him outta here!"

Gus looked around confused, from the sudden angered look on his father and audience members, to…the sad look in his mother's eyes as she explained he teleported. The crowd was furious. The Ringmaster grabbed him by the shoulders, and Gus teleported out of his grasp, causing more gasps. He looked at his mother's eyes, and saw…sadness. Loss.

…disappointment? No...not from his mother...

Since that incident, the circus performers---once called 'family'--- treated him like an outcast. He didn't belong. Heartbroken, he left a goodbye letter for his mother, telling her he was heading to the city, and not to worry.

He was able to adapt to the city life after a few months, using his gymnastic abilities...and his Gift...to pick up a few side jobs here and there. It didn't matter what it was, as long as coin was produced.

He never heard from his mother, or his father.

He was alone. Perhaps it was for the best.
