The Haunted House Escape

Oct. 1st-31st Event

You and your friends are invited to a Halloween party, the invitation insists you bring nothing from the outside, and that everything you need for an awesome night will be given to you on the inside.

You enter the front door and as you all file into the space, a loud click sounds behind you. Upon inspection, the door is bolted shut with no way to unlock it. The windows are all non-functional as well. Can you escape the house, or will you all become its next victims?

Some of you might recall I just experienced my first escape room, and let me tell you, it was amazing; I loved it! I wanted to bring something cooperative and interactive to our forums for this month. So, from October 1st until October 31st the Haunted House will hold everyone captive. That is to say, I will continue to run this event long enough so that lots of people have time to discover this and play along. If you all get through one room, you'll find yourselves in another area with new rooms and puzzles.

I will be acting as the GM for the story, and will help you all discover clues and items that will allow you to move through the house! But please be patient with me, because this is a wild undertaking. I suggest you hit the watch button if you want to follow along with the progression of this event!

The Rules

1. Anyone is allowed to participate, but there will be a need for some pacing to give everyone a chance to play. It's not really roleplay or character interactions. So just be yourself and have fun!

2. You may post discussions with friends in here, and talk about clues together. That's why I have actions look different than normal typing. Feel free to chatter!

But once someone posts any action, you must wait for me to respond to the action taken before someone posts a new one. Otherwise chaos may ensue.

Type your actions inside of double brackets, tag me, and write in bold text.

Example:

[[ @Jumbled Action: I pick up a pillow off of the couch. ]]

If a clue or item is found from your action, the item will be placed in the collective inventory in the second post. Anyone can use items that have been found and collected.

Example:

You lift the pillow and a small puff of dust fills the air.
There is a small note crumpled up on the couch.

3. If you were the last person to post an action, you must wait until 5 other people have taken actions before you can have another turn.

You can still chat in the thread, but if you want to see what is in the note, someone else needs to grab the paper and smooth it out.

4. Participation will grant you a skeleton key badge. You don't have to stay from start to finish, but you will need to post an action for a badge.

Looking around the space, you all find yourselves in a long, wide entryway. The door behind you is locked with no way out, and at the end of the room is another closed door. The room is dimly lit, and it’s difficult to see fine details.

On the left side of the room is a narrow table with five picture frames.

The floor is hardwood and a round rug dresses the center.

On the right side of the room is a small broom closet with an accordion door.

What will you do?

There are five frames lined up on top of the table. It looks like something is written on the glass. You attempt to see the fine details on the dusty surfaces, but it's difficult to see.

If you could find a light source, maybe things would become clearer.

Your scream bounces off of the walls and the sound is even louder because of how little there is inside the room.

There is a panel of 3 switches on the wall, but as you... Frantically flip them, the only change you notice is a soft yellow light through the slim cracks of the closet door on the right.

( Lol, guys you gotta wait until I respond to the current action in play. )

(This sounds fun!)

[[ @Jumbled Action: I move the rug towards the small broom closet. I want to see if there is a secret passage ]]

You slide the rug to the right and as you do, your foot wobbles on a creaking board. The rug lies in a pile, blocking the closet door.

@Crenna

You knock, the door is metal and can be opened, but a rug now blocks it's opening.

( I've added an Action table to the Progress section to help keep track of when people are able to go again, if they wish to! )

With the rug out of the way of the door, the group can once again see that the one functional light that firefly managed to turn on is shining from the inside of the closet, down onto the ground. It's flickering occasionally but is otherwise functioning.

The closet door slides open with a creaking groan. The light shines brightly in comparison to the rest of the entryway, even as it flickers. There is no broom in sight.

Inside you find several jackets hanging up on the bar.
A flat-head screwdriver sits on the top shelf.
There is a small box shoved in the back corner with various pieces of old mail inside. An umbrella leans against the wall. Several old shoes are tossed about.

[[ @Jumbled I walk down the wide hallway to the door at the other end and check for traps. Then I check for invisible traps, pookie. Then I check if it is locked and attempt to open it. I also attempt to assure @firefly that there are most certainly either chocky bananas or dried mangoes beyond this door in a bid to still the frenetic but oddly charming lightswitching. ]]

The door that presumably takes you into the next room of the house is locked. There is a digital pad above the door knob with the numbers 0-9 on it. In the dim light you notice a folded slip of paper sticking out from a slot of the door, as if someone didn't take the time to hide it well enough.
