Kal grabs a book at random to help out.

He places Volume D on the table and as he opens it up, the pages begin to flip like they have a mind of their own, stopping at sections without very long pauses.

Random words might catch his eye, such as Death, Dogwood, Dittany and Dew. But what might one expect to find when searching through something featuring the letter D? :sus:

The pages flip back and forth like some unseen entity has taken over their search.

( If you wanna keep working on the books, that's fine! But keep in mind these are large volumes and would definitely count as a single action per book. And if you don't pick a letter, I'll pick one for you. Realistically if you spent time looking through books it would take a while to get through all of them. Alex if you wanna edit your post you can! I'm cooking right now so I'll be a while. )

Alex opens the H volume off to the side, watching as the pages move more weakly as he's holding it.

It stops after a moment. Alex finds a massive passage about the Greek God Hades. He skims part of the passage.

Hades is a shadowy god in Greece. He has few myths, fewer cults, and is not even represented with certainty on archaic Greek vases. Homer (Iliad 15.187–193) mentions that Hades acquired the underworld through a lottery with his brothers Zeus and Poseidon. The passage is one more example of the increasingly recognized Oriental influence on early Greek literature, since it ultimately derives from the Akkadian epic Atrahasis. There is an obscure allusion in the Iliad (5.395–397) that Hades was wounded by Heracles "at Pylos among the dead." This myth is probably part of Heracles' function as Master of Animals and suggests that the personification of Hades dates back to the Bronze Age.

It goes on from there. It all looks like standard information about the God.

He turns the pageβ€”the book doesn't fight himβ€”and realizes that the rest of the encyclopedia has a rectangular cut out, like a compartment one might use to hide things in, but it is empty.

The jewelry box is left open on the coffee table.

Sass turns the dial, spelling out the word H-A-D-E-S and attempts to lift the lid.

It works!

I wonder what's inside! :starry-eyed:

[[ @Jumbled Action: I disregard everyone else being like "wait, what about the other three volumes?!", "We got the safe open, let's look inside!", and other suggestions, as I head to the desk. Sure, the side drawers have keyholes (which mean locked), but nobody said something about the top three drawers being locked, so I open them and examine for any sort of clues or anything useful.]]

Rei is drawn to the desk as friends unlock the safe. While the majority of the room is chilly, the desk is almost radiating pulses of heat.

With some quick tugs on the drawer handles, each of them slides open.

On the left you see dust, old paperclips, and a brass winding key.

In the middle drawer there is an old leather journal with a leather cord wrapped around it.

On the right side, there are several business cards with a sleek letter B in gold against a black background.
