Y/C has never been the sharpest knife in the drawer but he is charming and athletic so he has never really had an issue with it. His high school was all about sports so a lot of his teacher passed him in class so that he could continue to play sports. He was popular but was never mean, he was sweet and nice though a lot of the girls that were with him took advantage of his naivety and so he has had his heart broken many times. Still, he is a free spirit and always bounces back.

Y/C is now in college and the professors aren't like his teachers in high school. He is at college on a sports sponsorship and he is not doing well in his classes so he is in danger in losing his scholarship. He has to get a tutor and that is why he hires M/C, she is on the dean's honor roll. She is the opposite of him, she is too serious and doesn't really know how to take a joke. She also doesn't really know how to have fun as she spends all her time studying or reading.

Still, she is the first person not to treat Y/C like an idiot and he is the first person to actually try and show M/C how to have fun.
