Ooookay, here goes nothing from someone whos never played a single DnD. What am I getting myself into...?

It’s interesting to see how a hungry little mouse who finds crumbs at the king's table, believes that just because they get to eat the crumbs sometimes, then they’re entitled to more. Even bigger things than crumbs, and then start to steal from the table. Thinking they won’t be noticed in plain sight. Especially when knights stand in full view and are watching.

“Do you dare to beat on that, Mr. Pontík?”

I watch, like always, in silence as my boss Mr. Paladin toys with the latest rodent. Not like a simple house cat with a tiny mouse, no he's a leopard. The stealthiest of the big felines, or that’s what I assume my boss might think, where he sits behind his large desk in a dark golden suit with black spots grouped in rosettes. No elegant golden suit today. The only metal piece the watch around his left wrist.

The rat in question fidgets and moves uncomfortably on the chair in front of my boss desk.

“W-what type of beat, Mr.Paladin?”

“Whoever rolls the highest number on a dice, wins. Just as simple as that.”

“A dice?” The man squeaks.

I see the hope flickering to life in the rat's eyes. A small chance of winning back all he's lost. All depths gone in a moment, all that despair and anxiety with just a single role of a dice. A chance to start over. Looking for new crumbs. The street rat given a chance to win over the mighty Paladin.

I elegantly place a satin black pouch I’ve had hidden by my side, on the large desk between the two males. I never ever touch any of the dice inside it. I've seen Mr. Paladin fire employees for less.

Mr. Paladin opens the black pouch and takes out not a simple D6 dice, but a D20. Typical for deciding the success or failure of one's actions, and to make it more interesting I suppose. The rat swallows.

I silently placed a second pouch on the desk, a white one in front of Mr. Pontík.

“Why don't you start, Mr. Pontík?” My boss offers generously.

Hand trembling the rat takes a simple plain white D20 dice from the pouch I offered him. He hesitates, then rolls it over the table.

It lands on a 10. It's not the best, but not bad. He has a slim chance.

The rat's eyes widens, glances up at my boss. The mighty Paladin. The hope is bigger in the rat’s eyes.

My boss barely visible tilts his head to the side, slowly unknightly, wanting to seem stealthy. Assessing, judging and thinking what the outcome might mean to him if he rolls a lower number. Not much. This is not even a challenge for him. Just pure evening entertainment before the night chases the last light and sunshine of the day away.
For the rat in front of my boss, it's a sweaty battle of his life.

Mr. Paladin takes up his onyx black dice with golden numbers. Rolls it between his thumb and index finger, then he lets it drop and roll through his open palm down on the desk. It thuds over the wooden surface.

The golden numbers flashes like fire in the last light of the sunset.

18.

The rat in the chair whimpers in front of my boss. All hope gone in his now despairing eyes.

My boss raises slowly from his chair. Not graciously like a heroic champion or holy knight bound by a revered oath. People think that just because his family name is Paladin, he is honest and honourable, buuuut my boos likes to pretend otherwise. To play outside the noble box, and go a little rogue. To play and strike from the shadows. He sees and knows everything that either happens or goes on in his company. He knows who's late, he knows who's behind in their tasks and he knows who owns him and exactly how much. Who steals far more than crumbs from the company. A Paladin would never hurt the less fortunate, but… another type of class might.

“Aah, what a pitty”, my boss says with feigned condolence, as if he’d just announced today's weather forecast.

I bow slightly as my boss walks around the desk, knowing it’s my cue to leave, and as I leave Mr. Pontík in the chair behind me and opens the door leading out of the office, the rat is still staring at the black dice on the desk, unaware of the big shadow moving towards him. As I closed the door behind me, the last sunshine of the day disappears, and I leave as the office falls into darkness. I know the headmaster of the Paladin family is still behind the doors, even if my boss himself wants to play and go a little rouge with the rat. To finish the job.

Eventually all rodents get caught, especially those brave, or rather foolishly enough to climb the table in plain sight of the shadow knight.
