PERSONALITY
Laurel does a good job putting on an air of confidence, but she’s actually going through a bit of an identity crisis. Stuck between two worlds- the one her family lives in and the one she wants to live in- she is trying to discover who she is. The problem is, she cares too much about what other people think about her to be genuine to her own desires. Is she on her current path because it’s the one she wants, or because she is rebelling against the box her parents want her to be in? Time will tell. Afraid of having regrets, Laurel tends to act first and think of consequences second. Fun is the priority since it was put on the back burner during her childhood, but sometimes the prim and proper way she was raised bleeds through her new lifestyle. Her catchphrase would be “Rebel, but keep it classy”.
BACKSTORY
Laurel’s father, Henry Alder, comes from a respected and well-established family in England. He was a gifted violinist, playing in the London Symphony Orchestra, one of the world’s most prestigious orchestras. It was there during a run of Carmen that he met Katrina Bennet, an American opera singer, and fell in love. The pair eventually married, with approval from both their discerning families, made permanent residence in America and had two daughters. The eldest, Olivia, took after Henry and played the violin, while the youngest, Laurel, showed signs of being a piano prodigy by the age of 5.
Growing up, Laurel conformed to her parent’s strict upbringing, spending hours upon hours honing her talents rather than being a “normal” kid. Playing on stages instead of in parks, Laurel missed out on a lot of fun, and grew to envy other kids for their perceived freedoms. As she got older, the more her parents pushed her towards the piano, the more Laurel resisted, to a point that she began to hate playing.
When it came time to go to college, her parents wanted her to attend Julliard, where she’d been accepted, but Laurel rebelled, choosing to pursue a degree in marketing at a state university instead. For the first two years Laurel gave up any musical pursuits, but then she met Audrey and Rich and for the first time in her life, found herself enjoying and making music for herself with a band they’d formed with the addition of Estella. In order to expand the band’s success, Laurel dropped out of college as they went on tour.
Reunited with the piano, on her own terms, Laurel is happier and freer than she ever had been, at the cost of her parent’s and extended family’s disapproval. She tries to convince herself she doesn’t care or need their approval, but this has led to her identity crisis as she feels pulled between her classical upbringing and the path she’d been raised to follow and this more rebellious path with Midnight Society.
