Which writing forums should be visible to guests?

Happy October Sanctum Dwellers!!

We have a big month planned!! Challenges, movie nights and, I am happy to say the long-awaited return of site badges
But those are for another day.

For now though, we are considering making a fairly significant change to the site and this is your chance to give input on the extent and nature of that change.

Since I know some of you never actually sign out, you might not remember what the site looks like when you do

As you can see, guests can see the rule thread, About Us, a member's online list and nothing else. This was a choice made effectively at the founding of the site—since we do not allow PM roleplay, we ensure privacy by making most content user-only.

However, we have realized recently that by hiding all active forums, we are hurting our ability to appear on search engines and attract new users.

Our planned update is a compromise position. Some forums will be made public-facing so guests can get an idea what the site is about. This includes all our "Bulletin Board" forums, with the exception of Wanted posters (User pictures will never be made visible to guests), the Outer Sanctum and possibly our challenge forum. This will allow site SEO to improve and guests to see that our site is active, but keep your writing private.

With a change like this though, we also have to consider whether the roleplay forums themselves should be visible.

What we need input on is our roleplay forums. Here there are three options:

1. Status Quo: All written content is members only

2. Partial change: The Great Hall forums become visible (Poe's, Twain's, Unfinished Tales) but the Forbidden Sanctum remains locked.

3. Total transparency: All forums except places with user pictures are visible to guests

To be clear, this is not an issue where we move ahead with whatever gets a narrow majority. If there is strong opposition to option 2 or 3, we will not move forward with them, at least not without adjustments.

Regardless of what gets chosen, no change to the request forums will be made without notice—if option 2 is selected, we will give ample notice for anyone with stories in Poe's Corner to have them moved.

Answer the poll above, post your thoughts below. This discussion will likely be ongoing for some time and we will let you know well in advance of any results being put into action.

In my opinion, all forbidden threads should be kept hidden, but then I am also open to keeping the status quo.

Now when it comes to getting your name out there, since I am not really that big in technology is there parts that are important that you can somehow boost your SEO. I work under an alias on this site, I don't need people know me in real life and know what a dirty slut writer I am. Thats why I write incognito and have always loved it being hidden, but I get the need to improve and gather more people.

Poe's corner, while not porn based, can still have some heavy topics and while I wouldn't be against strangers reading *some* of my content, I wouldn't be comfortable with any of my current stuff being read by non members or available in google search.

I think a good alternative would be to make a seperate forum where people who want to post stories that can be read by the public can maybe as well as the custom world. That is, unless you give users the option to move their rps somewhere more private onto a different part of the site so they arent viewable publicly by strangers. I would like a way to publicly showcase my writing and stories on this site as it would make me more inclined to write my own story on my own but I don't really feel comfortable with people reading my current role plays that aren't members

If option 2 is picked, we will announce the change well in advance—likely two weeks to a month minimum. Any threads in Poe's can easily be moved by staff into the Forbidden Sanctum forums. Or we could restructure things in other ways.

We actually did consider adding the specialized forum as an option four 😆 We decided we'd see what people think first, as that option could result in confusion or split the votes of people who want all forums private.

Yeah I loooove the idea of posting some stuff publicly because I could post my original stuff and fanfiction here instead of Ao3 and get feedback from the members here but my currents stuff?

*sweats*

That being said hard no on people being able to read Forbidden Sanctum stuff. Its nerve wracking enough when members here read my poorly written smut, no thanks 🤣😅

😆 That I can understand and if the initial response is any indication, it's a general consensus. That option was mostly there to cover our bases and get some sense of granularity in results (Truth be told, seeing some of the stuff I put in Torture Chamber is not likely to attract members). Our first priority is always our users and even if there was a miracle win of option 3, we would almost certainly have made sure there was a private forum.

Will say I personally would stop using Poe's Corner if it become available for non-members to read, it was a big enough leap for me when I joined for members reading my stuff also considering we do get underage people trying to sneak on at times I'd be very uncomfortable having any content readable to non-members.

I'm inclined to say stick with the Status Quo, keeping all RP threads hidden by those who aren't members. That's what drew me in to the site to begin with, honestly, because I like privacy.... and I don't want to move my threads that aren't in FS because I have a hard enough time writing well enough for the threads that are there to begin with...

I say... maybe the bulletin board and the sanctum tavern, and resources, be made public if you really wanted to make things more viewable? Minus certain things like member pictures, art, and request threads, of course.

But that's just me.

The top priority in this regard is the Request forums. Basically, hundreds of threads where people post "roleplay", fandom lists and other things will give us a lot of positive feedback. We're one of the larger 18+ roleplay forums out there (possibly THE largest, now that GP and DR are dead), but we have realized that entirely closed forums mean that our rankings on Search engines don't reflect that.

Honestly, I don't want a huge influx of new people 24/7, but that's just me. I dont want the site to run into some of the issues like GP had, where there were so many active people that things were very cliquey and it was very hard for new people to "break in"...even crazy experienced people.

Depends if you want many new people joining. If you do, everything should be visible, so they have an idea how active and expansive the site is (and they get an idea if they can find their niche here or not). The more you have on display, the more chance there is, that someone will find something they like, and join. If you don't want many new joiners, keep most of it hidden.

My take on it. My vote was "everything visible", since as a rule I don't like hidden stuff. Plus, weird or not, I kind of like the idea of total strangers getting an insight into my brand of depravity hehe :P

I was first on guilty before it died, glad I found this place cause it's death was sad

And to add this place is so freaking amazing

I like the forums hidden, agreeing with those above I will add too.

I have seen in Chat new members join and then state, "now what?" Or "what's this site suppose to be...?" When I first joined, I liked that I could review all the info and welcome related information to understand Sanctum. The info board was easy to read and wasnt daunting to review other boards til I was committed to coming on board.

I didnt join right on the spot, but found Sanctum through the voting site via Mr. Google. Upon that voting website I reviewed a few others that were high ranked as Sanctum. I weighed my options as I looked at 2 others, and did feel a bit intimidated seeing ALL the writing boards from those two. One, had crazy weird (drill Sergeant strict) rules and obligations, the other had my head spinning at some of the rps I was reading. In the end, I decided to close the tabs and join here. It felt very comforting and easy to follow guide where I felt committed to joining and getting skin deep in the other member viewed boards.

I have been a member of this site for many years and until a couple days ago. I had never been hasseled or had any problem with the staff. There are many clichs on this site who consider themselves to be better than everybody else. I have spent month trying to find partners to write. It has become quite difficult. I one day PM'd a roleplay request. As it sometimes happens. The writer who posts the request, wanted to see a post int the response. Wo we continued writing in the pM. Where nobody judged us for our writing skill and we didn't have to deal with the arrogance of the membership who feel they are perfect. Then a coupledays ago I replied to a partner request thread. It happened to be a staff member who took it upon herself to check my PM's even though not one person had complained about us. After numorous threats from one of youradmin people. I left the PM conversation. Being tols that they could kick me off the sight for anything they wanted to because it was a free website Your Amin person threatened me further and then spoke to me as if were a kid. I'm 62 years old. I will not be spoken to as though I'm a kid. Then after leaving the conversation with your female. That staff member who invaded my privacy without cause, tells me we can still rp and that she was just doing her job. I choose to leave the conversation and simply said "No thanks. I've changed my mind." I then hit the leave button and left the conversation a second time. She once again tesponded using profanity. I replied without using any profanity. I hit the leave button for the third time but this time I blocked her from writing me again. I have decided that your site, a site that i've been a member of for at least six years, and until two days agohad never been in any trouble.
You are welcome to contact me if you have any questions. Thought I seriously doubt that you will Whether something is free or charges a fee. The staff representatives should always behave professionally. It's clear your staff is lacking in that area. I'm have joined a different writers sight and look forward to my new begining.

Odd how you don't mention that the story you wanted to write was about raping a gorilla, something that has been against our site rules since we opened. I would know, I wrote them. The rules that, for the record, you agreed to when you signed up. I know that as well, as we explicitly say in the rules thread that our rules do not have exceptions. Also forbidden was PM roleplay—explicitly because if permitted it would be used by people who would, for example, decide to write stories about raping animals in direct violation of our rules. Odd how that slipped your mind. Almost like if you admitted that, it would make people notice that we had a good reason to warn you.

I am deeply sorry for any accidental or amateur discourtesy on Otys' part. I assure you, all future discourtesy shall be entirely deliberate and done professionally.

In that spirit, please kindly convey my deepest condolences to the admins of the new site that now have to deal with you.

Go fuck a monkey.

Sincerely yours,

The Inner Sanctum Adminstration.

In GrumpT's defense, it was the apes who were the aggressors. Not the human characters trying to get some of that sweet monkey love.

I don't want folks to get the wrong idea about the bestiality roleplay in PMs that we viciously invaded GrumpT's privacy to arbitrarily end because we hate him in particular.

Respectfully.

Bax

Honestly, if he's been around for YEARS he fucking knew better than to try and pull that shit. 0 sympathy from me, that's for damn sure. He should just be glad the admin staff didn't let me loose on him.

I liked what @charliekitty suggested. I don't think I would leave the site if my stories were made public however I prefer the current set up, "Status Quo" as it is called, because it just makes me feel more comfortable. I think there should be public forums set up for people who are are okay with/want their work to be viewed publicly.

Also lmao! Not you 62 yelling at people online for not allowing you to be a garbage human being while you broke rules you knew about. Also 6 years and no roleplay partner because you have no humility or emotional intelligence in your 60s to ask for what you want. Oh because you couldn't. Because then we'd know you are a garbage human being. Anyway, these are my thoughts.
