Creatures of Irish Myth

Tuatha De Danann: Supernatural race of heavily spiritual beings.

amp.jpg.webp

Abhartach: he is an evil tyrant who had been killed and buried upside down after he had been terrorizing his people. He brought himself back to life with his magical powers to seek revenge and to drink the blood of his victims (vampire-like). The only way to stop the Abhartach is to repeat what had been done to him before: kill him and bury him upside down.

Aibell: the creature was considered a guardian over the powerful Irish mortal clan, the Dál gCais.

Aos Sí: This is the collective term for the supernatural fairy race in Ireland. They're generally said to live in fairy mounds and frequent enchanting woodlands.

Bánánach: the bánánach are otherworldly beings that haunted battlefields.

Banshee: a female spirit dressed in a white cloak that heralds the death of a family member by wailing at nightfall. They are a creature that symbolizes death. A banshee or a 'bean sidhe' (fairy woman) was the name given to 'keeners' who were women who sang at people's funerals. It was thought that they could be mythological creatures, due to their beautiful singing voice.

Bodach: Boogeyman

Caoránach: the mother of demons and deathly spirits.

Cat sìth: fairy creature said to often resemble a black cat.

Changeling: is a creature that replaces human babies to terrorize parents. They're thought to be deformed fairy babies that are swapped with a human baby by their fairy parents. This is because fairies are known for being obsessed with beauty, so they will steal a human baby in order to have a beautiful child. Changelings thrive on bringing destruction to their human parents and feed off good fortune. We aren't certain where this story originates from, however, many think that the story of changelings was used as an explanation for particularly difficult babies.

Clíodhna: the Queen of the Banshees. In some tales, she is also the goddess of love and beauty.

Clurichaun: is a mischievous fairy. In tales, he tends to enjoy alcohol a bit too much and is often depicted as heisting breweries in search of liquor!

Crom Cruach: Prior to Christianity in Ireland, Crom Cruach was, according to ancient Irish folklore, a god.

Cù-sìth: ghostly hound of massive size. It roams mostly around the holy mounds and stone circles on foggy nights. It is a harbinger of impending death, it emits three terrifying howls before it begins its hunt. Those who do not find shelter before the third howl will risk having their souls dragged away to the otherworld.

Daoine maithe: This is a collective term used to describe fairies in Ireland. Daoine maithe means "good people".

Dobhar-chú: half-dog, half-otter is a land- and water-dwelling creature that feasts on human flesh.

Donn Cúailnge: a bull

Dullahan: headless mythic creature.

Creatures of Irish Myth Pt 2
Ellén Trechend: three-headed beast.

Enbarr: a mythological horse who could take to both land and water.

Failinis: an unstoppable hound who fought in battles

Far darrig: type of 'red man' fairy, who prefers to be left alone (similar to leprechauns). Far Darrigs are evil tricksters who take pleasure in terrorizing people. They carry a sack, which they use to kidnap people. If you want to escape the traps that Far Darrigs leave out for humans, you have to declare "you will not mock me". They're also associated with causing nightmares in children.

Fear gorta: They are zombie-like creatures that are corpses who have risen from the dead. They have protruding bones and rotten blue skin. Fear Gortas are usually seen in times of famine. They walk the streets asking those who they encounter for food. If you give the creature food, you'll be blessed with prosperity and fortune. If you don't, you'll be cursed with poverty and misfortune. The moral of the legend of Fear Gortas is to share what you have and look after each other.

Fetch: a doppelgänger, when living people see an apparition of themselves. This usually heralds death.

Fomorians: supernatural race and are depicted as hostile and come from the sea or from underground dwellings.

Fuath: deadly creatures that inhabit the sea and other waterways.

Gancanagh: This male fairy is known in Irish mythology for seducing women.

Glaistig: creature appears as half beautiful woman, half goat.

Glas Gaibhnenn: s a virile cow who produced endless bounty.

Joint-eater: an invisible fairy who sits alongside someone and eats half their food.

Kelpie: Kelpies are evil water spirits that live in rivers and lakes. They usually appear as horse-like creatures and they try to entice children into the water. Once their victim is on their back, they swim underwater, taking their victim with them. It's thought that this legend was made as a way of teaching children not to go near the edge of the water to stay safe.

Leprechaun: a type of fairy in folklore and leprechauns are generally depicted as solitary creatures in green garb. They are also known to be shoemakers who hide pots of gold at the end of rainbows. Forced to grant 3 wishes to those who find them but are known to trick the wish maker.

Merrow: a mermaid or merman.

Oilliphéist: a dragon-like monster.

Púca: an evil shape-shifting fairy who wreaks havoc on people at night. Pookas will take on the form of a horse to stampede people's property and destroy buildings. They also tend to steal crops, which is why some farmers would allocate a section of their crops to the Pooka as a way of appeasing it. Pookas can also take the form of a human-like goblin. They will call out the name of their victims outside a house and wait for them to emerge. If they do come out, the pooka will kidnap them. If they don't, the pooka will destroy their property outside. There is no clear meaning behind the legend of the pooka, but this creature most closely resembles the cross-cultural concept of a 'bogeyman'.

Sluagh: restless spirits of the dead!

Imprinting

When a shape-shifter imprints on a specific woman, he becomes unconditionally bound to her for the rest of his life. When it happens, the experience is described as gravitating toward that person. Yet, simultaneously, a radiant heat fills him, and everyone and everything else in his life become secondary. Only the imprint is left to matter, leaving the shape-shifter with a deep need to do anything to please and protect his soulmate.

Imprinting can occur anytime after a wolf's first phasing. It can happen to anyone, regardless of previous personal feelings. It happens the first time he sees the person he's imprinting on.

What would happen if a wolf is rejected by his imprintee is also unknown, though this is assumed to be virtually impossible. The imprinter is deemed to be the "perfect match" to the imprintee—he will be anything she may want or need, making rejection unlikely. However, should it happen, the imprinter may feel unspeakable pain and even want to commit suicide.

Effects of Imprinting

Distance- The further that the Imprinter and Imprintee are from each other, both will feel extreme pain like lightning going through their blood. If it is not remedied in a few hours, the pain will increase the further they are from each other. If not corrected, it will eventually disable both partners until they are reunited or death takes them.

Heat- When a female Imprintee goes into heat, only the male Imprinter will satisfy her needs, she may take other males to her bed, but it will not sate the fire inside her till her mate's seed fills her womb and douces the heat.

Personality Changes- Both couples will be possessive, aggressive and feral to any wolf near their mate and feel the need to please and protect each other with their lives. A female imprintee will be jealous and possessive of her mate, while a male imprinter will be aggressive, possessive and deadly to any male touching his mate.

Male Imprinter- After Imprinting with a female, he will receive more powers, strength and virility. In addition, his wolf shape would grow, and if not already an Alpha, he could change to Alpha or Primal Alpha with a suitable mate.
Status- Respected more for having a mate. Males without mates are seen as weaker, not blessed by the gods for being given a female. Increasing Heirs would satisfy the lines and have less chance of battles for the pack's leader.

Female Imprintee- Heightened Senses and an intense heat that will overwhelm her to the point of pain if not sated.
Female human- If a female Human is imprinted on and not changed, she could have all her senses increased, hearing, scent, sight and speed. She will also experience heat during her menstrual cycle, which would be more than a wolve as a human female ovulates once a month.

Sexual Needs- It is known that it would be difficult for the male to achieve an erection when his mate is not the one he is attempting to mount. It would be difficult but could be achieved but the end result would not satisfy him.
A female could easily take multiple different males but would also find it difficult to achieve satisfaction at the end.

Differences of imprinting can be seen in different packs, when a wolf imprints on a human or another species. The effects have been seen in certain combinations but it is different with each imprint, including what rank the female and male are in the pack.

History

In October 1641, the native Irish in Ulster rose in rebellion in response to decades of widespread dispossession, dislocation, and systematic religious discrimination. Within months, the rising had spread throughout the kingdom, leading to thousands of Protestant settlers, both English and Scottish, and similar numbers of Irish Catholics, killed in retaliatory actions by the colonial regime. The violence continued unabated for almost a year until the establishment of the Catholic confederate association in the late summer of 1642 helped restore order in large swathes of the country. The outbreak of civil war in England between the king and parliament also prevented English military resources from reaching Ireland, forcing the colonial government to adopt a largely defensive strategy. Ireland experienced a complex conflict involving confederate, royalist, parliamentary and Scottish forces for the next seven years. No one side could win an absolute victory, but King Charles's execution in January 1649 enabled the English parliament to focus exclusively on Ireland for the first time since 1642.

In March 1649, Westminster appointed Oliver Cromwell to lead an invasion of Ireland to crush all resistance to the new English Commonwealth and to avenge the alleged massacres of Protestant settlers in 1641-2. Irish land was also a valuable commodity, almost 70% of which was still held by Catholic landowners. Cromwell arrived in August with 12,000 troops and a formidable train of siege artillery. Over the next four years, his army defeated all military opposition in bloody sieges and battles, including the notorious massacres at Drogheda and Wexford in late 1649. Catholic Irish resistance proved very stubborn, and the English army resorted to scorched earth tactics to deny the enemy sustenance or shelter.

In 1650, the war continued in Ireland, moving north and starting to touch the Conaghue Forest borders that many mythical creatures, legends and packs lived and called their own.

Wolfwalkers

(Permission to use the below skeleton by Redfren- Will be HEAVILY altering this but the skeleton is just a base reference for research purposes. The blow is not accurate for the core group of Wolfwalkers and is more closely aligned with modern-day Werewolves. Aspects of the following will be used with permission.)

Werewolves can take on 3 shapes – Human / Wolf / Werewolf,
…Human is a typical form and based on their birth this might be altered slightly but there will be more information about that below.
…Wolf this should be a standard looking wolf however like the myth says it should be much larger than a normal wolf
…Werewolf this form is often referred to as the war form is big and not all should be able to take it. It is painful and requires the werewolf to pause and alter their form midway through transformation. It is your typical werewolf from horror movies.

Types of werewolves can range and below I am going to list a few of them to give some idea of what I mean
BLUE BLOODS are royal werewolves and yes some are inbred though that is not as common anymore. These royals are well respected in society. Some say their blood makes them better, but few know if that is true. Others say because of the inbreeding they are weaker and have deformities they hide like humans (Regulars) but again few know if this is true or not. They keep away from most groups, but should you see one know they carry weight behind their words.
PUREBLOODS are born werewolves. While rare it is possible to be born a werewolf rather than turned by one. These styles are called purebloods and the only real gift they have is that they shift a little faster and more easily than others. They are normally much more familiar with the lifestyles of werewolves they also likely have a better grasp on their wolf and its nature. One of the downsides to a Pure Blood is they tend to have more wolfen like features, perhaps sharper teeth, longer ears, more hair than normal the choice is yours but purebloods are closer to their wolf then bitten are.
...BITTEN / TURNED werewolves are the most common. Though even these can be rare. Their attack must be so savage so brutal that near the brink of death or just seconds after it, the infection, virus, or curse takes them, whatever you choose to call it. They have all the powers that any other werewolf has but learning to control their wolf can be a big challenge.

The Wolf
..I use this term to describe the second side of a werewolf think of it as a second person living just under the skin. Providing gifts but also demanding much in return. The wolf is more than just a way for people to refer to the more bestial side of things. "I let my wolf take control" etc. It is an aggressive dangerous beast that follows the natural desires of a wolf only amplified with the superiority of a human. The wolf has needs and if they are ignored it can and does take control causing many people to go insane or attack others killing randomly and fighting like the wild animal it is. When something like this happens, they should be put down.
…The wolf is an A-Moral predator, they are dangerous and do not care what is right and what is wrong. That is a human quality and the closer someone is to their wolf side the more wolf like they are. Think of a regular wolf walking in the forest and coming across a wounded animal no matter how old that animal is if that wolf's hungry that's dinner. It is the human side that stops that behavior and says this is unacceptable. The closer one is to their wolf the more wolf like they are.

Gifts are there, of course, aside from changing their form, werewolves along with most shifters can take on some of their animal counterparts traits such as better vision, sharper smell, hearing, taste buds, they tend to be stronger than humans (regulars) even in their human form, faster than your typical human (regular), more durable than a human (regular). Because of this they are watched carefully making sure a werewolf doesn't walk into a gym looking like a 190lbs and bench 500lbs like it's no big deal. (An extreme example but you get the idea)

Society
This is an important topic because it will govern many things. From the pack to the state to the country.
...Prime Alpha – this is a werewolf that rules all other werewolves in the country. This werewolf will call Alpha's from all the states and gather them. A Prime Alpha would never handle pack disputes but would handle a war for example.
...Alpha – In a pack, there is one leader above all others, This is the Alpha they have absolute control over their pack and are responsible for their pack. They are tied to them on a spiritual level and can often feel the presence of a member. Their power allows all other wolves in the pack to feel this same connection to each other. Like the tree and the branches are the pack.
...Ranks – ranks are a big part of the werewolf society, who is the strongest. They have a very Viking like mentality when it comes to leadership and perhaps one of the most disturbing things about them is that these challenges for dominance and authority over one another are so common that it's become part of their culture.
...Omegas – A type of submissive to the pack, They avoid challenges of dominance and accept being at the bottom. This does not mean their mistreated or abused. In fact, most packs fiercely protect their Omegas because being around them can have a soothing effect on others. They are however at the bottom of the pack and from time to time authority is flexed to make this point clear by those who might be displeased by them.
...Lone Wolves – A lone wolf is a dangerous wolf. They are not hunted but often not welcome in territories that do not belong to them. Packs actively seek them out to recruit or get rid of them. Lone wolves can be one of the leading factors in bitten victims. As a werewolf, the wolf side is always seeking a pack. When that is not the case the wolf tends to assume it is time to die and has wandered off to do just that. However, some Lone Wolves have been forced to wander alone. Causing heartache and pain throughout their life.

In short, werewolves are a brutal and aggressive group of individuals they are not a barbaric group but they are a highly aggressive, sexual, and territorial bunch and in a pack can be extremely dangerous even when alone they can be unpredictable.
