Felicity closed her eyes for a brief moment, Enjoying the smell of fresh brew and the comforting sounds of the coffee machine, she forced herself up from the comfort of her couch to pour herself a cup.
Nothing could quite beat the peace of an early morning. A quiet morning and most importantly, one without demand.
So when Felicity was finally ready to enjoy the first sip of coffee, she nearly dropped it in her lap upon the loud ringing of her phone. With some quick reflexes she managed to safe her coffee, pick up her phone and not get burned by the hot brew. Any other moment she would have applauded herself for the incredible feat.
"And that's why they invented silent mode", she muttered to herself while wiping a few spilled drops from her lap.
"Yes?" She answered, a bit more prickly than she usually did.
"Hello, this is the I.W.A. speaking..." A metallic and rather distorted voice said. Punctuating each letter in the abbreviation in a slow and delibirate pace. Felicity had already stopped listening, trying to determine whether she knew any organization by that name, but coming up empty. With a sigh she hung up the call and grabbed her coffee again, hoping to return to the feeling of a peaceful early morning.
"Stupid bot calls." She muttered under her breath.
With peace returned and caffeine coursing through her veins Felicity decided to turn to internet search and try and find out more about the company. As expected she could find no traces of any such company operating in her country, which resulted in a deeper search. After all free time and enquiring minds equalled the time for a proper deep dive.
"Infrastructure... W... W..." deep in though Felicity considered what the W could stand for, only to be interrupted by the aggressive buzzing of her phone. "Dang it!"
Grabbing the phone, she noticed the caller ID was blank. "We are trying to contact you..."
That strange metallic voice began. Decisively Felicity ended the call and went back to her search.
"International... War... Agency". She gave it some thought, shrugged and hit enter. Though the search provided her with a lot of interesting organizations she knew nothing of, nothing close to I.W.A. popped up.
Again her phone buzzed. Again no caller ID.
"No!" She called into the phone before promptly hanging up again. Without a number to block, but also needing to be called in case of emergency, there was little else she could do.
By now the coffee had run cold and the peace of morning was slowly changing into the buzz of afternoon activity. A quick break for lunch, during which she kept pressing 'decline call', was all that halted the search for answers.
That is untill she came upon an forum which claimed I.W.A. stood for 'Intergalactic Insurance Agency'.
Felicity started to laugh. Obviously the poster had their letters mixed up. Some scrolling later revealed he believed it to be an "alien typo".
Perhaps this was a sign to let it go, but her phone kept receiving calls and was slowly driving her mad. Turning off her laptop she decided to go against all she believed in and answer next time she was called.
"Hello, this is the I.W.A.. We've been trying to reach you about your UFO's extended warranty."
Felicity nearly hurled her phone across the room at that. It was certainly the most ridiculous thing in a long time that had taken up her day. Taking a deep breath to compose herself she answered.
"I'm sorry, but I believe you have called the wrong number"
"That is unlikely."
"It's a fact." She deadpanned, before the voice could continue. At least this confirmed it was not a bot.
"Negative." Probably a male, Felicity thought to herself.
"Please state the number you are trying to reach." She implored with a sweet voice. After a short pause the voice began to cite numbers, ending with 12.
"See, you called the wrong number. Mine ends with 2-1."
Another pause.
"We've been trying to contact you regarding..."
"No! No! Check the number so help me, or I'll file a complaint!"
While Felicity was no one stranger to using empty threats, she blanked out and could not come up with anything else., However this being said to a being from a world of bureaucracy, this proved extremely effective.
"A moment." A slew of high pitched noises and static reached her ears. After a moment the voice started again.
"We apologize for the inconvenience."
Click.
The next day, after the calls had continued throughout the night Felicity promptly applied for a new phonenumber.
The real owner of the UFO unfortunately never received the call and only found out the reason for it after crashing it on a hostile planet.
