Welcome.

You're all probably wondering where you are, or how you came to be here. Maybe some of you already understand. Or maybe some of you at least suspect what has just happened to you.

Either way, I'm afraid there's no easy way to explain this.

You're dead.

No, this is not a nightmare, or one of those near-death experiences where you'll wake up and carry on with your lives.

You are all permanently, definitively dead. Your mortal lives have come to an end. I know that may be difficult for some of you to accept, but such is the nature of death itself.

But this is not the end for you. At least, it doesn't have to be.

You see, normally mortal beings are meant to die naturally once their time has come, and not a moment sooner or later. However, life and death are not always that simple in practice.

Each and every one of you knows this all too well. Some of you were caught in fatal accidents. Some of you were murdered. Whatever the case may be, none of you were supposed to die yet.

Now, before anyone asks, all of you are already too far beyond the point of no return, so returning to your mortal lives is no longer an option. However, in light of your untimely deaths, each of you will be given a choice.

But first, allow me to introduce myself.

My name is Aidoneus. I am the Director of the Afterlife Defense Agency. Our purpose is simple; we are authorized to recruit deceased souls like yourselves who have died before their time, and offer them a means to return to the realm of the living in exchange for putting their lost time to good use. What exactly this entails will change over time as you rise through the ranks of the agency, but in short, our agents are trained to handle a wide variety of operations in the realm of the living, ranging from stopping everyday criminals to protecting against more serious supernatural threats.

That may sound too far out of your league for most of you right now, but you are not as powerless against such threats as you may think. You are already dead and can no longer be killed in the mortal sense, nor are you susceptible to any mortal disease or pain, and any conventional injuries you may sustain will promptly repair themselves. Your current 'condition' has certain other advantages as well; you can become visible and invisible to mortal eyes as you see fit, pass through solid objects as if through air, and sense things that living humans cannot, among other abilities that may gradually reveal themselves as your spirits grow in strength over time. In addition, the Agency will provide any and all training and equipment necessary for whatever situations you may be required to face.

That having been said, each of you will be given as much time as necessary to process your situation, but after that, you will have a choice to make. If you would rather just move on, simply walk into the light behind me and cross over to the afterlife, wherever that may lead you. Or if you are not ready to move on yet, you are free to leave and live out your new existence however you wish, within reason.

Stick to the main plot.
If you want to give your original characters their own backstories or have them interact with other characters, you're certainly free to do so, but don't let it reach a point where the main storyline is derailed or ignored, because that's not fair to your fellow RPers who are trying to follow the main plot.

Don't hog the RP.
This RP will be designed to give everyone a fair share of the spotlight and a fair amount of control over what happens in the RP, so please extend the same courtesy to your fellow players. Again, OC backstories and character interactions are fine, but it's not fair for any particular group of players to hog a scene in such a way that no one else can get involved or have any reasonable degree of control over the story. Likewise, it's not fair for any particular group of players to start constantly alternating posts among themselves on the IC thread without giving anyone else a chance to post; if a scenario comes up where you must alternate replies in this manner, you may put together a co-op post over PM's and then post the full co-op post when it is finished, provided that this is not done in such a way that other players are not given a reasonable degree of control over what happens in the RP (I.E. Powerplaying, Autohitting, etc.).

Multiple characters per player are allowed, as long as it doesn't reach a point where you monopolize the RP.

This may seem minor, but it's been my experience that using other formats can lead to confusion, or may make it more difficult than necessary to be descriptive with your posts, and for players to use different formats can also get confusing, so I've decided to set a clear standard for everyone's benefit.

Put a reasonable amount of effort into your posts.
I won't nag you over every little spelling mistake, and I'm not requiring a full-blown novel in every post. But if your posts are so poorly written that no one can understand what you're writing, or if you don't include enough detail in your posts for other players to be able to write a decent reply, something's amiss.

HISTORY
Aidoneus is a very ancient spirit compared to most others that have not yet crossed over. Consequently, details about his mortal life are very scarce aside from what he himself may choose to reveal, which mostly consists of whatever information he deems necessary to share under any given set of circumstances. In death, he found himself unable to cross over, his soul too burdened to find peace, and so he took to resolving unfinished business and keeping watch over the ones he'd left behind. As the years passed, his loved ones in life all eventually died and crossed over, yet still he remained, a part of him still sensing that something needed to be done.
Years became decades.
Decades became centuries.
During that time, Aidoneus learned to adapt to the changing times and make full use of his ghostly existence, his spirit wandering throughout the world and encountering many others who were like him: lost souls who had died before their time but had not yet crossed over. Aidoneus helped them as best he could, and managed to help most of them eventually find peace. Some spirits, however, were simply too broken or too corrupted to find peace quite so easily, and to make matters worse, many of those particular spirits would go on to cause harm to the living. Aidoneus did what he could to stop them, but he could not handle them all on his own. Fortunately for him, though, Aidoneus found a growing number of allies from among the very spirits he'd sought to help, some of whom willingly stayed behind for a while in an attempt to make up for the time they never got to enjoy in life. Many of these spirits, in turn, sought out other lost souls, helping the lost to find peace and dealing with the broken and the corrupted as necessary, while also bringing even more wandering spirits into the fold. Thus did this loosely-formed coalition grow and solidify itself into the modern Afterlife Defense Agency.
Throughout all those years, Aidoneus has maintained a strong leadership role within the Agency, still staying behind even as countless agents have come and gone. However, as even he himself has acknowledged, human souls are not often meant to linger in the realm of the living for too long, as those who do so generally tend to wither away or become more prone to instability over time. That Aidoneus would still remain in spite of that has led to speculation that he still has some unfinished business left to resolve on the mortal plane, though as of now he typically refrains from direct involvement in the field unless the situation absolutely calls for it.

Cole was shot 20 times in the body with an M1918 BAR, once in the leg with a .38 revolver, and once between the eyes with the same gun.

DEPARTMENT
Training & Recruitment. He primarily works as a Field Trainer, taking the lessons recruits have learned in the classroom and running them through live-fire and real-time drills and scenarios. Whilst this is his current job, he has also worked closely with other departments, specifically Supernatural Defense.

RANK
His current rank is most likely Senior Agent. He lives for field operations and it's where he excels at the most. He may have been offered a higher-ranking position before but if it's a position that would take him away from the field, then he has likely turned it down. Despite his insistence to remain a Field Agent, he has earned the respect of many of his superiors and his input is well-regarded, though he may not always be listened to. He's a bit of an Old Dog.

SPECIALTY
If I was going to rate his areas of expertise from 1 to 5, I think it'd look like this:

Combat - 5/5. Years of military service/law enforcement as a mortal and more in the ADA has made him an expert in all manner of arms as well as employing his supernatural gifts in high-speed combat situations.

Explosives - 3/5. He knows how to handle small explosives such as grenades, flashbangs, and the occasional bit of thermite or C4 but that's really it. He can't really make his own nor does he entirely comprehend how they work. All he knows is you light it, toss it, things go boom.

Stealth - 4/5. His training does allow him to be sneaky when he needs it. He's done a few operations where stealth is of importance but it isn't really his style. He much prefers going in loud then quiet. Despite his own personal choice of dealing with situations, he understands the importance of stealth training and ensures that his students learn it just as well as everything else. There are many agents who can certainly outperform him in this department and he has no shame in admitting that.

Mortal Technology - 2/5. This is, by far, his weakest area. He has relatively poor information and understanding of modern mortal tech. Any tech the agency gives him, he can use but that's only because he's been using it for so long that he understands enough to operate it and get the job done. He likely has 0 idea of how the thing works or if it can do anything else beyond what he needs to complete the mission. For example, say the agency gives him a smartphone. After a few months, he might know how to use it to call someone or send a message and tweak some of the settings. That's kind of it. He probably doesn't know that it can be used to watch videos or play music. He may know that it can connect to the internet somehow, like for instance, to access the agency's database, but that's the limit. Same goes for anything else modern like computers and touchscreens and what not. This has also blinded him to much of the pop culture of the modern times.

APPEARANCE
Cole stands at an imposing 6'2. He has a slim physique but there is plenty of muscle tone from years of fighting. He's not overly bulky and there are definitely people much stronger physically than him, but what he lacks in raw strength, he makes up with better instincts and experience. He has lightly tanned skin and black hair with hazel eyes. He's got a well-defined face that gives a more youthful look. His hair isn't terribly long, cut just above the ears with his bangs slightly longer and swooped across his forehead.

HISTORY
Cole Fontaine was born in the middle of New Orleans in 1922. His mother was a seamstress and his father was a businessman from New York. His mother died in childbirth, her final wish being for his father to take good care of him. His life was simple and he wanted for nothing, given his father's affluent background. His father was kind to him and never resented him, but things were sometimes off, as his father didn't know what to say sometimes. This led to an odd distance between him and his son. At the age of 12, Cole was sent to a private school away from his home. He hated it there, he got along with no one, got into fights. It was an awful experience.

When he was 19, he snuck out one night and went to join the military, hoping to find a better life for himself, serving overseas and killing Krauts in the second World War. He was wrong. The things he saw changed him forever. He watched the friends he found get picked off, one by one, at the hands of German Infantry. Eventually, he got promoted to the 75th Ranger Regiment where he fought alongside the most elite soldiers America had to offer.

After the war, he came home to find a different New York than the one he left. Maybe it was the City that changed. Or maybe the war had just changed him. He became a police officer, partly because he missed The Fight and partly because he didn't like the idea of not having anything to do. Felt he had to do something, besides wasting away in a shitty apartment or going back to the father that sent him away.

Soon, he found someone, a girl working at a restaurant named Jenny Springs. She changed his life. She made him feel like everything he had went through was worth it. They were madly in love. Problem was that Jenny had a secret. She was the daughter of a crime boss and the family wasn't particularly happy that she was with a member of NYPD's finest. Once he found out, he tried to get away with her. Run off back to New Orleans, away from their pursuers. He didn't want to lose the one thing that brought him joy in this world that had taken so much from him. But it wasn't enough. He wasn't enough. They found them and they killed her in cold blood right in front of him.

They shot him in the leg so he couldn't run. He tried running to her to be with her in her final moments. That's when they opened fire on him. His body was riddled with .30 bullets and he collapsed on the floor nest to her. He coughed up so much blood. He was fading fast. He tried reaching out with his hand to hold hers once more, but a boot pinned his arm to the ground. Her father's boot. He looked up to find the barrel of a .38 pointing right at his face.

And that was that.

Overall appearance: Blond hair almost white, pale skin and deep blue eyes.

Personality: Has a temper, but it's a slow build. He's willing to get all of the facts before making a decision. He's cool and level headed. He's a bit of a recluse and likes to hide behind his computer


HISTORY

Olwen was born in a small town the younger twin of a newly married couple. He and his sister were the best of friends and when they turned eighteen, both had applied to colleges away from each other. Before they left, they got similar tattoos.

Olwen left for New York to study computers and graduated with a masters degree. He was immediately hired on by an internet company and ran their IT department so he never went home to his small town. His sister and parents had only been able to visit a few times after he graduated and they were devastated to learn of his death.

HISTORY
Carl was a simple man, in an airport, in London. He had no idea that a top assassin would accidentally poison his complimentary macadamia nuts because his target's name was in fact Karl Smyth. Carl, if he'd been given the choice to know that, or not know that, he would have gladly chosen ignorance because today was the day! Yes! Finally, after two years of sacrifice, he had saved up enough time off and money to go on the first real vacation of his adult life.

No parents. No friends. No real reason to do it except that he wanted to. No girlfriend, and for the first time, Carl was really happy to be single, because that meant he was truly, truly free to do whatever he wanted, after all, he had been working his butt off. No days off, working voluntary overtime and taking the hours as compensatory time off rather than money; and. . . uh, well, that's all he really did. Well, at least he had a good job and a lot of disposable income from his tech job. Oh! He also started going to the gym and he's looking pretty good - not professional athlete good, but definitely above average. He'd also gotten a nice haircut and bought new clothes. To be completely honest, Carl looked good, felt good, and was about to go to Spain for like a month.

...And then the mix up. In hindsight, it takes a real shitty "top" assassin to mix up something as simple as a targets name, and worse than that, the real Karl Smyth was allergic to macadamia nuts so his plan would've failed even if he had gotten the right guy. Damn Carl's willingness to eat whatever free food was offered to him, it had cost him everything. Turns out nothing is free in life after all. The ineptitude of the assassin pissed him off so much that he dedicated his death to becoming the best spy and intelligence gathering personnel in history just to spite the guy and prove that it's not that hard to get the facts before you do something. How did he have the gall to call himself a professional?! The audacity.

HISTORY
Like all spirits of children who died far too young, the miscarried baby who would later adopt the name "Makaria" ("Kari" for short) underwent a metaphysical development in which her spirit form would gradually "grow up" with adequate care as she gained strength. Such child-spirits require special care during this process, and must traditionally maintain a healthy attachment to their living relatives under the close supervision of ADA-appointed guardians, until eventually they are deemed mature enough to make "the Choice". In Kari's case, however, there were a number of complications; not only had Kari been the product of a drunken one-night stand that neither party ever fully remembered, but her birth mother turned to drugs and alcohol to numb the grief from the miscarriage and was subsequently committed to a mental hospital.
With no living relatives for Kari to attach to who were both willing and well-adjusted, Kari's attachment to her living relatives had to be carefully managed and monitored, effectively limiting her overall contact with the realm of the living. Aidoneus ultimately assumed the role of Kari's guardian, becoming a prominent father figure to her, and Kari joined the ADA out of sheer gratitude upon reaching maturity. Thanks largely to Aidoneus' tutelage, Kari has excelled in her basic training, but has not yet been approved to begin work out in the field.

Cause of Death: Dean was driving his younger sister home from school when they were in a devastating car crash. He died instantly from a head injury, and has no idea whether or not his sister is okay.
Department: Undecided, he is a new recruit.

Specialty: He hasn't discovered his specialty quite yet, but one thing worth mentioning is his cut throat nature. He almost seems to care about nothing (thought this isnt true) and will follow orders with no remorse.

History: Dean and his younger sister were orphaned early on in life. He was 8 and she was 5. Their father passed away shortly after Ally was born, and their mother took to drinking to fill a hole. Eventually they were taken away from her and none of their relatives were suitable for the children to live with. The two struggled as they got older to stick together. No one wanted to adopt both children, but they refused to separate from each other. Dean became extremely protective over his little sister and studied hard in school with the sole purpose of providing a good life for her. After graduating he began attending college, determined to make her life and home as comfortable as possible. The two were extremely close and Ally adored her brother and all he did for her. He was picking her up from school to take her home one day when the wreck happened. He'd been on his phone, and the slight distraction was enough for him to drive into the wrong lane. The semi hit them, mostly on the driver's side which killed Dean almost instantly. Ally was left completely heartbroken and alone, taken from her home with her brother and placed back into the orphanage for the next year of her life.
Dean encountered the ADA shortly after his death, but at the time, the thought of joining the ADA hadn't really crossed his mind. Instead, after being taught all he needed to know about his new ghostly existence, Dean left to reunite with Ally at the first possible opportunity. Ally still needed him, and not even death could make him abandon her. In fact, his original intention was to stay with Ally and watch over her for the rest of her life, to which the ADA did not object. However, Ally objected to the idea of Dean being essentially trapped on her account, so when Dean let slip to her what he knew of the ADA at the time, it was Ally who eventually convinced him to return and join them. Dean did so for her sake, and even now she remains his strongest motivation.

Brys was always considered to be beautiful. Standing at a tall 6'1", Brys was gifted by good looks thanks to his parents, who were always considered to be beautiful in their own rights. Graced by brown hair, blue eyes, and a bronzed skin complexion, Brys drew stares everywhere he went. His affinity for sports only seemed to contribute to his beauty and by the time Brys died, he had a very fit upper body.

HISTORY
Brys Adamson has always been somewhat a thrill seeker. Brys was an only child, and since his parents worked in pretty demanding careers, he spent a lot of time alone. One day Brys watched the Men's Gymnastics competition during the Summer Olympics and asked his parents to sign him up for classes. His parents did so, but since they often had to work odd hours, he often had to stay even after his class was over. His coach, in an effort to use time wisely, just gave Brys additional coaching.

This additional coaching made Brys a master gymnast in just a few years, and was slated to go to the Olympics himself. However, during a parallel bars routine, he suffered a serious knee injury and Brys's Olympic dreams were dashed. Brys wallowed for a few days, but surfing on YouTube one day happened to watch a video on parkour. Brys was inspired and began to train, and once his knee injury was better, began to do parkour around the city. Brys soon discovered that he enjoyed the high risk stunts the most, relishing in the way he felt when doing something a bit dangerous.

Once Brys's parents found out, they requested he find something else to do, and after some searching, began to train in martial arts, more notably Wushu, which made great use of Brys's acrobatic skills. Brys eventually became so good that he competed at the World Wushu Championships a few times, often being one of the top martial artists. Brys felt this gave him the thrills he sought out, as well as continued to hone his acrobatic skills, which is something he still deeply cared about.

After Brys graduated from college, he moved to a coastal town and once again turned to doing something active. Since he lived near the ocean, Brys began to surf and swim and one day decided to learn how to scuba dive, always fascinated with pictures he saw of the marine wildlife. During one of his classes, he descended quite far, but had to ascend quickly due to an underwater current. This resulted in Brys getting the bends, or decompression sickness, but was unable to get the correct treatment in time and died.

Information Center

Ghosts are the spirits of deceased humans who have not yet crossed over. They can no longer be killed in the mortal sense, and are effectively immune to mortal diseases and the like because they are already dead. However, they are vulnerable to attacks by other ghosts and by other spiritual entities, and weaker ghosts are sometimes especially vulnerable to magic, electromagnetic fields, and/or bright lights. Conversely, ghosts can naturally detect spiritual forces in any given area, and can commonly pass through solid objects and make themselves visible or invisible to living humans at will, while stronger ghosts may develop a wide variety of other special abilities as they gain strength (usually depending on the age and strength of will of a particular ghost).

Ghouls are a type of corrupted spirit best known for eating human flesh. Although they are most commonly associated with graveyards and eating the flesh of the dead, stories of ghouls killing and eating living victims are more common than one might think. Ghouls are not to be confused with ghosts despite some similarities in terms of powers and weaknesses, but it is not unheard of for severely-corrupted ghosts to acquire a taste for human flesh not unlike that of a ghoul.

Incubi and Succubi are a type of corrupted spirit best known for their tendency to visit living humans as they sleep and attempt to seduce them, in some cases even going as far as to try to rape them. Historically, it was generally believed that incubi (the males) would target women while succubi (the females) would target men, but this is not always the case. In fact, there have also been reports of a very rare subspecies that can change its sex at will, able to change from an incubus to a succubus and vice versa. Whatever the case may be, although incubi and succubi are both inherently infertile, they will inevitably feed off of the energy and life force of their victims. Frequent visits by an incubus and/or succubus can result in deteriorating physical and/or mental health and eventually death.

Vampires are one of the most famous types of corrupted spirits: so much so that there are now multiple conflicting accounts as to the precise attributes of a vampire, most of which are based on half-truths and eyewitness accounts without sufficient context. Contrary to popular belief, the most common type of vampire is the "psychic" vampire, which does not drink blood but instead drains the energy and life force of their victims, typically via touch or eye contact. Blood-drinking vampires are not unheard of, usually as the result of a vampire possessing a human corpse (preferably newly-deceased) and using it to drain life force in a more potent form through the consumption of blood, but this is relatively rare due to the large amounts of blood and life force needed to prevent the corpse from decomposing and becoming useless to the vampire.

Wraiths are newly-deceased ghosts, particularly the ghosts of humans who died a very violent death or who endured a great deal of pain and/or suffering prior to death. Though not necessarily corrupted spirits in and of themselves, wraiths tend to be mentally unstable and aggressive, and are highly vulnerable to corruption without proper care and guidance. It is possible to rehabilitate an unstable wraith if they can be calmed down as soon after death as possible, but the longer a wraith goes without immediate help, the more likely they are to become permanently corrupted.

Psychopomps are a class of spirits whose role is to ease the transition of souls from death to the afterlife, whether by sending omens to the person and/or their loved ones to warn them that their time is coming, or by waiting to collect the soul when their time comes and then deliver them directly to the afterlife. Traditionally souls whose time has come are required to cross over immediately except in extreme situations, but psychopomps can usually be persuaded to allow someone who has died prematurely to stay behind until their unfinished business on Earth is resolved, or sometimes even longer if the soul in question agrees to watch over the living in exchange for the extra time. Although psychopomps are generally benign spirits and do not kill anyone directly, they are often blamed for the deaths they foretell and/or preside over, and efforts by humans to bribe, banish, or even capture psychopomps in an attempt to cheat death are quite common in folklore (e.g. the capture of Thanatos by Sisyphus). It is also not unheard of for psychopomps to abandon their duties and go rogue, the end results of which may vary.

Thanks. We already have all the groundwork laid out for what will happen first, so if it does come to that, I may start with everyone just hanging out and interacting with each other before the main action starts, or if need be I can go ahead and start off our plans myself. Either way, I'm definitely looking forward to seeing how this will go!

There is one other potential recruit profile pending (played by @TinyEldritchmonster), but Tiny and I had agreed to let Rinzler have the final word on accepting the profile. With Rinzler absent so long, though, I'm not sure how long Tiny is willing to wait, so I'll sort that out by the end of the week if Rinzler hasn't replied back.
 
I'm perfectly fine with waiting as long as I need to! Theres no rush!

I'm not sure about everyone else, but I like the idea of letting them interact before the mover. (Though I am also fine with whatever happens, they're both good starts)
