In a world where vampires and humans coexist, peace is anything but guaranteed.
Vampires have long been feared and despised by humanity, largely due to the horrific actions of Rogues- vampires who have starved themselves to the point of permanently losing control of their bloodlust. Once a vampire becomes rogue, there is no turning back. They become dangerous, unpredictable creatures capable of feeding on humans, animals, and even their own kind.
While vampire hunters continue to patrol the streets, not all vampires are bloodthirsty monsters. Some families have spent generations living peacefully among humans, surviving entirely on animal blood.
However, there is one rule these families must never break.
Once a vampire tastes human blood, even a single drop, animal blood can never sustain them again.
For vampires dependent on human blood, survival means finding a registered human donor. Unfortunately, willing donors are few and far between. Humans fear the pain of a vampire's bite, and rumors that vampires eventually kill their donors have only made matters worse. Under the law, a vampire may register with only one human donor at a time, making the arrangement a serious commitment.
For (m/c), being a vampire has never been particularly easy.
Born into a peaceful vampire family, she's a shy, soft-spoken young woman who can barely stomach the thought of harming another living creature. Even drinking animal blood makes her uncomfortable. Fortunately, she has always had one person who makes her feel normal.
Her human best friend, (y/c).
The two have been inseparable for years, despite (y/c) coming from a family of vampire hunters. There's just one tiny detail (m/c) has never managed to confess.
She's a vampire.
Or at least, she thinks it's still a secret.
Over the years, (y/c) has pieced together the truth through her strange habits, unusual behavior, and the occasional glimpse of something decidedly inhuman. Rather than confront her, he's chosen to wait patiently for the day she feels comfortable enough to tell him herself.
Now, with their freshman year of college beginning, (m/c) is hoping for a fresh start.
Unfortunately, trouble seems determined to follow her.
When the two are invited to a college party, (m/c) reluctantly agrees to attend, only to discover that (y/c)'s ex-girlfriend is there. The same girl who made her high school years miserable, openly despised vampires, and never understood why (y/c) insisted on spending so much time with her.
But something is different this time.
Rather than greeting (m/c) with her usual hostility, the girl is surprisingly friendly. She apologizes for her past behavior, strikes up a conversation, and even offers her a drink.
For once, (m/c) begins to wonder whether she'd misjudged her.
What she doesn't realize is that the girl's sudden kindness is nothing more than a carefully constructed act.
Having long suspected (m/c)'s true identity, (y/c)'s ex has devised a cruel little experiment. She wants to see whether (y/c) will continue choosing his precious best friend once she's no longer the harmless, animal-fed vampire everyone believes her to be. After all, all it takes is a single drop of human blood.
By the time (m/c) realizes something is terribly wrong, the damage has already been done.
Her body begins rejecting the very blood that has sustained her since birth, leaving her family scrambling for answers and (m/c) facing a future she never wanted.
With human donors notoriously difficult to find, her condition growing worse, and the threat of becoming rogue looming over her, (m/c) may have no choice but to finally reveal the truth she's spent years hiding.
