Mireya Orsin
Some things haunt houses. Some haunt bloodlines. Mireya has always been more interested in the things that haunt possibilities.

Dossier
Name: Mireya Solenne Orsin
Alias: Mira, Morrow, The Notary, The Woman Behind the Glass, The Notary of Unhappened Things
Age: 29
Born: April 18, 1997
Race: Human-born Witch
Birthplace: Trieste, Italy
Sex/Gender: Female
Sexuality: Bisexual
Occupation: Forensic Provenance Specialist / Private Recovery Consultant
Hair: Naturally dark, usually worn long
Eyes: Grey-green
Height: Approximately 5'7"
Build: Curvaceous, feminine, long-legged
Tattoos: Botanical work along her arms and shoulders, created partly as mnemonic architecture
Piercings: Ears
Status: Unmarried, deliberately childless

Personality
Mireya is observant before she is trusting and curious long after common sense suggests she should stop. She reads people through their omissions, habits and contradictions rather than accepting whatever version of themselves they offer first. Confidence comes naturally to her, though it should never be mistaken for carelessness. She understands danger remarkably well. She simply refuses to treat fear as an instruction.

Her humor tends toward dry, irreverent and occasionally wicked, particularly when circumstances become too serious for everyone else's comfort. Flirtation comes easily when she is interested, though attraction does not automatically translate into vulnerability. Mireya likes remaining difficult to categorize. She can be warm without becoming transparent, intimate without surrendering control and honest while still leaving half the truth comfortably in shadow.

Years spent questioning the reliability of her own memories left her unusually devoted to evidence. She writes things down. Keeps ledgers. Dates documents. Preserves receipts, photographs and handwritten notes because memory, in her experience, is merely testimony. Documentation is proof. Beneath the composure is someone deeply aware that people, histories and even identities can be edited out of existence if the wrong forces decide they are inconvenient.

Her independence is both strength and defense mechanism. Mireya has never built her life around permanence and does not require conventional domesticity to feel complete. She values chosen loyalty far more than inherited obligation and prefers complicated truths to comforting lies. When she cares, however, she cares with an intensity she rarely advertises.
Likes: Old books, impossible histories, antique objects, strong coffee, good bourbon, rain, archives, quiet observation, dark humor, beautiful clothing, difficult questions
Loves: Freedom, truth, forgotten stories, chosen loyalty, uncovering what others tried to erase
Alignment: Morally grey / fiercely self-directed
Magic: Vestige Work, Palimpsest manipulation, Residual Sight, Redaction and Borrowed Outcomes
Other: Her magic is never free. Larger alterations can consume certainty, memory, emotional associations, skills or pieces of identity.

History
Mireya Solenne Orsin was born on April 18, 1997, in Trieste, into a family whose history revolved less around power than documentation. The Orsins produced archivists, translators, librarians, restorers and witnesses, people who spent generations preserving what everyone else eventually forgot. Her father, Lucien Serrat, was a French architectural-lighting designer with no supernatural ability whatsoever, but he taught Mireya to notice the world through shadow, angle and interruption. Her mother, Eveline Orsin, understood much more. A gifted document conservator with knowledge of the occult, Eveline recognized what Mireya was long before Mireya possessed language for it.

Her first manifestation came at eleven when she entered a room of stored objects she had been forbidden to touch and placed her hand upon a silver necklace dating to 1978. Instead of merely sensing its history, Mireya saw something stranger: not quite what had happened, but something that might have happened. Eveline began training her privately afterward, teaching observation, languages, archives, legal history, probability, logic and memory alongside the dangerous magical discipline their family called Vestige Work.

Vestige Work concerns the remains of abandoned possibilities. Every decision kills thousands of outcomes. Every accident creates paths reality refuses to take. Every object, person and place carries faint pressure from versions of events that almost existed. Mireya learned to perceive those remnants through Residual Sight and eventually to interact with the deeper structure known as the Palimpsest, reality layered over all the possibilities it discarded.

At fifteen, Mireya discovered exactly what that power could cost. During a fire, one possible outcome ended with her escaping through smoke with burns and injuries. Another ended beneath a collapsing corridor. Eveline refused to accept the latter and forced reality to retain the surviving conclusion. It was not resurrection. It was replacement. Probability demanded payment anyway. Mireya survived carrying memories from both possibilities while her father lost something far more precise: certainty that he had ever possessed a daughter.

For nearly two years afterward Mireya suffered bleedthrough between contradictory memories, insomnia, dissociation and the unsettling knowledge that evidence could disagree with lived experience. Documentation became sacred. She kept ledgers because memory could lie. She began her tattoos at eighteen, the botanical patterns functioning partly as mnemonic architecture, physical anchors for facts and associations she refused to risk losing.

At nineteen, Eveline disappeared. Not merely missing, but methodically removed. Records concerning her began collapsing into contradiction or absence. What remained behind were forty-seven boxes, two firearms, forged passports, cash, artifacts, ciphered notebooks, Eveline's pen and one instruction: Do not come looking for me.

Mireya did what Mireya generally does with instructions she dislikes.

She looked.

Seven years of searching turned a private obsession into a profession. Mireya became an independent forensic provenance specialist and private recovery consultant, investigating stolen artwork, fraudulent ownership, disputed inheritances, missing records and objects whose histories refuse to remain sensible. To ordinary clients she is exceptionally good at following paper trails. To those who know what they are looking at, she is something significantly more dangerous.

Her magic allows her to perceive residual possibilities, expose erased histories, strengthen or identify certain supernatural contracts and, under dangerous circumstances, replace an existing outcome with one reality previously discarded. Redaction can remove elements from an established chain of events. Borrowed Outcomes can drag an unrealized possibility close enough to become real. Neither is safe. Vestige Work operates according to balance, and reality is a patient creditor. The greater Mireya's interference, the more personal the payment can become: certainty, memories, skills, attachments, recognition, even pieces of identity.

That cost is why she rarely treats magic casually, no matter how casually she treats danger. Somewhere beneath every investigation remains the same unanswered question that began when she was nineteen. What happened to Eveline Orsin, and what could frighten a woman capable of editing reality badly enough to erase herself before telling her daughter not to follow?

Evelina Voss

"He called me a miracle when what he really meant was proof. There is a difference between being loved and being studied. I learned that one underground."

Witch-born. Wolf-blooded. Vampire-made. A living contradiction that was never supposed to survive.

Dossier

Full Name: Evelina Voss
Nickname: Evie
Age: 23
Apparent Age: Early twenties
Race: Witch / Vampire / Werewolf Hybrid
Status: Supernatural anomaly
Sex/Gender: Female
Sexuality: Bisexual
Sire: Lucien
Turned: Age twenty-one
Current Status: Independent / Hunted

Hair: Long, blonde
Eyes: Light, expressive; visibly altered by hunger and supernatural states
Build: Feminine, slender, curvaceous
Complexion: Fair
Presence: Deceptively soft; predatory beneath the surface
Style: Feminine, sensual, darkly elegant
Distinguishing Traits: Carries characteristics of three supernatural bloodlines simultaneously

Personality

Evelina is a contradiction long before one considers the blood running through her veins. She can be warm, playful and disarmingly charming, possessing an easy femininity that often causes others to underestimate how closely she is watching them. She enjoys teasing people who interest her and has a habit of answering intimidation with dry humor rather than giving someone the satisfaction of seeing fear.

Underneath that softness is someone considerably harder. Evelina survived Lucien by learning to observe before reacting. She distrusts easy kindness, dislikes surrendering control and becomes particularly defensive when she feels cornered. Her independence borders on stubbornness. Attempts to own, command or contain her tend to bring out the ugliest edges of her temper.

She is capable of genuine affection and fierce loyalty, but intimacy has become complicated territory. Lucien taught her that tenderness can hide possession, leaving her suspicious of anyone who becomes fascinated with what she is rather than who she is. Even so, she remains curious, passionate and capable of forming intense attachments. She is not cold. If anything, she feels far too much and has simply become very good at deciding who is allowed to see it.

There is also a dangerous recklessness in her. Evelina will knowingly walk toward something dangerous if curiosity gets the better of her, particularly when someone tells her not to. She can be impulsive, sarcastic and occasionally self-destructive, yet when circumstances become truly serious, the scattered edges disappear. Survival taught her when to stop playing.

Likes: Night drives, old books, storms, expensive liquor, dark humor, magic, music, dangerous curiosity, freedom
Loves: Autonomy, genuine loyalty, being underestimated, rare moments of peace
Dislikes: Confinement, laboratories, manipulation, cages, invasive questions, being treated as an experiment
Fears: Losing control of herself; becoming what Lucien wanted her to become
Alignment: Chaotic Neutral
Traits: Witty, observant, stubborn, flirtatious, guarded, curious, resilient, reckless, passionate

Bloodlines

Evelina should not exist. Her mother descended from a witch bloodline while her father carried a dormant werewolf curse. Evelina inherited both, though for most of her human life her witchcraft was the only supernatural inheritance she truly understood.

Her third bloodline was forced upon her.

At twenty-one, Lucien turned Evelina into a vampire despite the accepted belief that the transformation should either kill her or destroy the supernatural inheritance she already possessed. Instead, all three survived. Her witchcraft remained accessible, the wolf blood persisted and vampirism successfully rooted itself within her.

The result is not three separate creatures conveniently occupying the same body. Each bloodline influences the others. Vampiric hunger can destabilize her magic. Strong emotion can awaken predatory wolf instincts. Magic can occasionally suppress or intensify aspects of both. Evelina is still learning the limits of what she has become, meaning even she cannot always predict what her body will do under extreme circumstances.

Her existence consequently carries enormous value to anyone interested in supernatural evolution, weaponization, bloodline manipulation or immortality.

Abilities

Witchcraft: Evelina possesses natural magical ability inherited through her maternal bloodline. Her magic responds strongly to emotion and instinct and includes ritual work, spellcraft, protection magic and other supernatural practices developed through study.

Vampirism: Enhanced strength, speed, senses, reflexes, durability, healing and predatory instincts. Blood remains necessary and hunger can severely affect her judgment when ignored.

Wolf Blood: Heightened senses, instinct, aggression and physical resilience. Her wolf nature can become considerably more pronounced under emotional stress and lunar influence.

Hybrid Physiology: Evelina can survive conditions that would ordinarily be incompatible with one another. Her supernatural systems appear capable of compensating for weaknesses belonging to the others, though the process is imperfect.

Weaknesses: Hunger, magical exhaustion, emotional instability, conflicting supernatural instincts and the possibility of one bloodline temporarily overwhelming the others. She is powerful, not invulnerable.

Lucien

Lucien was Evelina's lover before he became her sire, though in hindsight she no longer knows where affection ended and experimentation began.

An ancient vampire and obsessive supernatural researcher, Lucien became fascinated with the boundaries separating witches, vampires and werewolves. What began as scholarship gradually became experimentation. Bloodlines became equations to him and living supernatural creatures became subjects through which those equations could be tested.

Evelina eventually became his greatest obsession.

Lucien discovered the dormant werewolf inheritance carried through her father alongside the witch blood inherited through her mother. Convinced that the combination might allow her to survive vampiric transformation without sacrificing either inheritance, he began quietly studying her. Blood, healing, magical reactions and countless other details were documented without her knowledge.

Then he tested his theory.

Lucien turned Evelina against her will. Following an old ritualistic tradition, he buried her after the transformation and left her to awaken underground. Evelina clawed her way out of the earth starving, terrified and changed.

Lucien's theory had succeeded.

Instead of destroying her witchcraft or wolf inheritance, vampirism became a third functioning part of her supernatural physiology. From then onward Lucien's affection twisted almost completely into fixation. Evelina was no longer merely someone he loved. She was evidence that centuries of his research had been correct.

She eventually discovered the extent of his records and realized he had been studying her long before her transformation. Roughly two years ago she escaped, stole what research she could and destroyed much of what remained. She believed she had possibly killed Lucien in the process.

She was wrong.

Lucien survived.

Where he is now and what exactly he intends to do with the creature he considers his greatest achievement remain unknown.

The Trine

Among Lucien's research Evelina discovered repeated references to something called the Trine, an obscure supernatural legend describing a being in whom three incompatible inheritances could exist simultaneously.

Ancient fragments describe it through variations of the same phrase: blood of moon, grave and flame.

What the Trine actually represents is less certain. Surviving accounts contradict one another. Some describe a guardian, others a weapon, plague, omen or doorway. Lucien became convinced Evelina was either the fulfillment of that legend or proof that such a creature could deliberately be created.

Evelina prefers the explanation that Lucien discovered the legend and subsequently attempted to reproduce it through her.

There is another possibility she tries considerably harder not to think about.

Lucien may have been searching for Evelina specifically long before they ever met.

History

Evelina Voss entered the world carrying two inheritances she never asked for and would spend years understanding only one. Magic came through her mother's family, old enough that stories and warnings had accumulated around the bloodline long before Evelina was born. Her father's inheritance was quieter. Somewhere within his ancestry existed lycanthropy, dormant but never truly gone.

For much of her youth, Evelina was simply a witch. Strange things happened around her before she possessed language for them. Emotion affected the environment. Instinct occasionally preceded knowledge. Magic eventually became something she could study rather than fear, though there remained pieces of herself she could never quite explain.

Then Lucien entered her life.

He was sophisticated, patient and intensely attentive. To Evelina, his interest initially felt like intimacy. Lucien listened. He remembered. He seemed fascinated by every part of her she had learned to hide from ordinary people. She fell for him without realizing that his attention had another purpose entirely.

Lucien had spent centuries studying supernatural bloodlines and their incompatibilities. When he discovered what existed inside Evelina, affection and obsession became impossible to separate. Her blood suggested something he had spent centuries trying to prove.

At twenty-one he made the decision for her.

Evelina died human and awakened buried beneath the earth as something the supernatural world insisted should have been impossible.

She survived the transformation. Her magic survived with her. So did the dormant wolf.

For approximately two years afterward, Lucien studied what he had created while Evelina slowly discovered the truth behind their relationship. His private records finally revealed how long his experiments had actually been underway. She had never merely become his subject. She had been one before she even knew there was an experiment.

Her eventual escape was violent. Research disappeared with her. Other portions burned. Lucien nearly died.

Nearly.

Two years later Evelina remains free, although freedom has proven considerably more complicated than simply escaping the man who created her. Lucien is alive somewhere. Pieces of his research may have survived. Organizations such as the B.S.R.D. would consider a functioning witch-vampire-werewolf hybrid extraordinarily valuable, and other supernatural factions could regard her existence as anything from blasphemy to opportunity.

Evelina therefore keeps moving.

She is still learning what she is, still deciphering the research she stole, and still trying to determine whether the Trine was merely the obsession of an ancient vampire or something far older than Lucien himself.

One thing, however, has become painfully clear.

Lucien created something he could not control.

And Evelina has no intention of ever belonging to anyone again.

Sable Vesper

"Everyone thinks the wolf is the dangerous part. They're usually wrong."

Dossier

Name: Sable Elowen Vesper

Alias: Ves, Red, The Saint of Teeth

Age: 24

Race: Lykari Wolf-Shifter

Birthplace: Bellgrave, an isolated woodland settlement hidden from ordinary maps

Sex/Gender: Female

Sexuality: Bisexual

Occupation: Nightclub Owner, Information Broker, Occasional Hunter

Residence: Private apartment above VESPER, her supernatural nightclub

Hair: Long espresso-brown hair, usually worn loose

Eyes: Hazel-brown, shifting toward molten amber when her wolf surfaces

Height: 5'7"

Build: Curvaceous, athletic and deceptively powerful

Tattoos: Fine-line ink scattered along her arms, ribs and body

Piercings: Ears

Scars: Old bite scar beneath her left shoulder blade and several faint silver-inflicted scars

Wolf Form: Large dark-coated wolf with amber eyes and a pale marking across the throat

Personality

Sable is a contradiction wrapped in silk, perfume and sharpened instinct. She can be warm, playful and strangely affectionate with people she genuinely trusts, yet earning that trust is another matter entirely. She has spent too much of her life surrounded by predators, politicians, supernatural creatures and family members who understood affection mainly as leverage, so vulnerability does not come naturally to her.

Flirting does. Banter does. Smiling across a room while quietly deciding whether someone is dangerous does. Sable enjoys attention and knows exactly how to use her appearance to control the assumptions people make about her. What she hates is being underestimated for it.

She is fiercely independent, observant and rarely frightened in any obvious way. When she is afraid, she becomes calmer. When she becomes angry, the wolf starts listening.

Sable is intelligent without being academic, calculating without being emotionless and protective to a fault. She remembers favors, insults and kindnesses with equal precision. She tends to collect wounded people despite repeatedly telling herself she does not want responsibility for them.

Trust is the center of almost every problem she has. She wants intimacy but fears dependence. She wants loyalty but expects betrayal. She wants someone capable of knowing every ugly thing about her and remaining anyway, yet the moment someone begins getting close enough to do exactly that, her instinct is often to leave first.

The wolf complicates matters. Lykari bonds run deep, especially once Sable accepts someone as part of her inner circle. Once she cares, she becomes intensely protective and painfully aware of that person's moods, scent and presence. Her attachment is rarely casual, no matter how much she pretends otherwise.

Sable is not heroic, but she has rules. She despises cruelty for sport, trafficking, abuse of vulnerable people and predators who hide behind wealth or supernatural status. She has no problem threatening, blackmailing or hurting someone she believes deserves it. In her own words, she is not particularly interested in being good. She is interested in knowing exactly what kind of monster she refuses to become.

Likes: Midnight drives, expensive perfume, rain, dark clubs, antique rings, terrible reality television, cooking at unreasonable hours, cold bedrooms, city rooftops, strong coffee, old records and people who can make her laugh when she does not want to

Loves: Freedom, loyalty, her nightclub, complicated conversations, genuine affection, dangerous honesty, cinnamon pastries and anyone she has quietly accepted as hers to protect

Dislikes: Hunters with superiority complexes, silver, manipulation, entitlement, being cornered, betrayal, traffickers, arrogant pack politics and anyone touching her belongings without asking

Alignment: Morally Grey / Chaotic Neutral leaning Protective

Strengths: Tracking, intimidation, close combat, information gathering, heightened senses, regeneration and supernatural strength

Weaknesses: Silver, emotional bonds, pack instincts, unresolved grief and her tendency to protect people before protecting herself

Other: Lies do not have a magical scent, but Sable can often detect fear, adrenaline and changes in heartbeat well enough to know when someone is hiding something

History

Sable Elowen Vesper was born beneath a red moon in Bellgrave, a forgotten woodland settlement owned almost entirely by generations of the Vesper bloodline. Ordinary maps no longer mark Bellgrave correctly, and that suits the family just fine.

The Vespers are Lykari, descendants of an ancient lineage of wolf-shifters whose curse became hereditary so many centuries ago that no surviving relative remembers whether the first wolf was cursed, blessed or created deliberately. Unlike the creatures of campfire stories, Lykari are not helpless slaves to the full moon. They may transform whenever instinct or necessity demands it, although the moon makes resisting those instincts considerably harder.

Sable shifted for the first time when she was eight.

A childhood accident became fear, fear became rage and rage became claws. Her father dealt with the witnesses. Her mother dealt with Sable.

"You are not fighting the wolf," Elowen told her. "You are teaching her your name."

The lesson remained with Sable longer than almost anything her father taught her.

Her childhood was devoted to control. She learned to track prey before she was old enough to drive. She learned how to distinguish fear from excitement by scent, how to remain human while surrounded by blood and how to transform individual parts of her body without losing herself completely. Her father taught dominance, combat and pack hierarchy. Her grandmother taught older supernatural laws and treaties. Her mother taught something far rarer among Vespers: restraint.

That difference placed Sable increasingly at odds with her family.

She never accepted the idea that humans were livestock wandering ignorantly through a world owned by stronger creatures. She hated arranged bloodline marriages, territorial politics and the belief that family loyalty excused cruelty. The older she became, the more arguments with her father turned into something colder.

Then Bellgrave burned.

Sable was nineteen when another Lykari family known as the Morvane arrived under the excuse of political negotiations. The meeting became an ambush. Silver ammunition tore through the Vesper estate while fire swallowed the house.

Sable fought her way outside half-transformed, barefoot and covered in blood.

She found her mother beneath an old oak.

Elowen's final request was not vengeance.

It was for Sable to leave.

Sable promised.

Bellgrave burned for two nights.

The surviving Vespers blamed the Morvane and prepared for war, but Sable knew something was wrong. The attackers had known too much. They understood patrol routes, defensive positions and information known only to senior members of the family.

Someone inside Bellgrave had helped them.

Her father refused to listen.

Sable disappeared.

For the next two years she lived beneath false names, moving from city to city and surviving however she could. She bartended, worked private security, transported packages she deliberately did not inspect and occasionally accepted contracts tracking supernatural fugitives.

During those years she discovered the hidden economy that existed beneath ordinary society.

Vampires owned corporations. Witches worked private clinics. Demons traded favors through lawyers. Hunters sold information to the same creatures they claimed to despise.

Sable learned very quickly that secrets were worth more than blood.

At twenty-two she purchased a failing nightclub and renamed it VESPER.

The establishment became neutral territory for supernatural creatures, criminals, wealthy humans and anyone who understood how dangerous it could be to have nowhere safe to meet.

There are three rules inside VESPER.

No hunting.

No transformations.

No bloodshed.

Breaking those rules means answering directly to Sable.

The nightclub became the foundation of her information network. Bartenders overheard conversations. Security cameras caught meetings. Powerful people grew careless after midnight.

Before long, if someone needed a missing witch found, a rogue vampire located or dirt uncovered on someone who preferred remaining untouchable, someone inevitably whispered Sable Vesper's name.

Yet beneath everything she has built lies the same unanswered question.

Who betrayed Bellgrave?

For five years Sable has collected evidence surrounding the massacre. She eventually discovered the Morvane were paid, provided maps and supplied with silver ammunition marked by a clandestine organization known as the Ivory Hand.

Then one of her informants brought her something impossible.

A photograph taken only months earlier.

Her mother.

Alive.

Whether the woman in the image truly is Elowen Vesper, an impostor wearing her face or evidence of something far worse remains unknown.

Sable has told no one.

Things become considerably more complicated when her father vanishes and the surviving Vesper pack begins searching for her.

Some believe she should return and claim leadership.

Some believe she abandoned them and deserves death.

Others believe she knows what happened to her father.

Sable knows only that Bellgrave has begun reaching for her again.

She spent five years running from the place where her world ended.

This time, she intends to turn around and bare her teeth.

Valeria Kane

“When civilization ended, nobody became a monster. They just stopped pretending they weren’t one.”

Dossier

Name: Valeria Elise Kane
Alias: Val, Valkyrie, The Widow
Age: 25
Race: Human
Birthplace: Colorado, United States
Sex/Gender: Female
Sexuality: Story dependent
Nationality: American
Occupation: Former Special Operations Reconnaissance Specialist, mercenary, smuggler, bounty hunter
Affiliation: Independent
Former Affiliations: United States Military, joint special operations unit, Meridian Syndicate

Hair: Long dark brown, usually tied back in the field
Eyes: Hazel-brown
Height: 5'8"
Build: Athletic, conditioned, combat-trained
Tattoos: Optional / story dependent
Piercings: Ears
Scars: Shrapnel scar beneath the ribs, knife scar near the shoulder, burn scar along the left forearm
Distinguishing Traits: Controlled posture, watchful eyes, quiet movements, rarely appears unarmed

Personality

Valeria is composed, observant and extremely difficult to intimidate. She has spent long enough around soldiers, criminals and frightened civilians to know that the loudest person in a room is rarely the most dangerous one. She watches first, speaks second and rarely wastes words when a situation turns serious. Fear exists in her like it does in anyone else, but years of training have taught her how to force it into something useful.

Her humor is dry, sharp and often poorly timed. Stress tends to make her more sarcastic rather than less, while genuine anger makes her quieter. She distrusts authority almost automatically and has little patience for people who demand obedience without earning respect. Orders mean very little to her now unless they happen to make sense.

Despite her reputation, she is not cruel for sport. Valeria has a strong internal code even if it bears little resemblance to old-world law. She will lie, steal, threaten and kill when necessary, but she refuses work involving deliberate harm to civilians or children. Human traffickers, slavers and people who knowingly spread infection receive considerably less mercy.

Trust comes slowly. Loyalty does not.

Once somebody has earned a place beside her, she becomes deeply protective and frighteningly dependable. She remembers ammunition counts, injuries, habits, preferred routes, favorite food and exactly how somebody behaves when they are lying about being fine. Her greatest weakness is the same loyalty she considers one of her greatest strengths. Valeria will return for people when every practical instinct tells her not to.

Intimacy is more complicated. She can flirt easily enough, especially when she feels comfortable or when it gives her an advantage, but genuine vulnerability unsettles her. She has a habit of turning serious emotional moments into jokes before they can get too close to the bone. She sleeps lightly, keeps a weapon within reach and instinctively tracks movement around her even among people she trusts.

Likes: Black coffee, thunderstorms, old rock music, quiet forests, working machinery, campfires, dogs, clean socks, untouched supply caches
Loves: Loyalty, competence, hard-earned trust, rare moments of peace, protecting people she considers hers
Dislikes: Slavers, traffickers, wasted ammunition, incompetent authority, needless cruelty, people touching her equipment
Alignment: Morally grey
Strengths: Reconnaissance, marksmanship, tracking, CQB, surveillance, survival, navigation, field medicine
Weaknesses: Survivor's guilt, difficulty trusting, reckless loyalty, emotional avoidance
Other: Becomes noticeably quieter when angry and instinctively watches hands before faces

History

Valeria Elise Kane was born into a military family in Colorado and grew up understanding that permanence was a luxury other people seemed to have. Her father's military career kept the family moving, while her mother worked emergency medicine around military communities and disaster zones. By sixteen, Valeria could pack everything important into two bags and leave without looking back.

Her childhood was disciplined rather than sheltered. Doors were checked twice. Vehicles were kept fueled. Everyone knew where emergency supplies were stored. Her father taught her navigation and marksmanship, while her mother taught her how quickly a human body could fail when wounded. Both lessons became painfully useful later.

Valeria enlisted shortly after turning eighteen. Civilian life had never felt entirely natural to her and she quickly proved suited to reconnaissance, surveillance, fieldcraft, communications and precision shooting. She was eventually attached to a small joint special operations unit dealing with weapons trafficking, smuggling networks, hostile territory, kidnapped personnel and operations governments preferred not to discuss afterward.

Combat stripped away whatever romantic ideas she might once have held about military service. There were no clean victories, only compromised intelligence, civilian casualties, political interference and situations where the distinction between ally and enemy shifted by the hour. Valeria learned early that morality survived war only by becoming adaptable.

By twenty-three, she had become one of the more reliable reconnaissance specialists attached to her unit.

Then came Black Winter.

Nobody agrees exactly how the collapse began. Some claim a laboratory breach, others a naturally mutating respiratory infection, deliberate biowarfare or corporate experimentation. What mattered was the speed. Infection spread through major population centers and produced catastrophic neurological deterioration in a percentage of those exposed. Some died quickly. Others survived the fever only to become violently unstable, aggressive and increasingly stripped of higher reasoning.

Quarantine became martial law. Martial law became evacuation. Evacuation became panic.

Valeria's unit was assigned to escort medical researchers and classified biological material toward a secure facility inland. They never arrived. The convoy was ambushed by deserters and organized criminals who had already understood that ammunition, medication and fuel were becoming more valuable than currency.

Six members of her unit died.

Valeria survived.

She spent days moving alone through the wilderness, reaching the designated fallback location only to discover that nobody else was coming. She waited longer than she should have. That became the final order she ever followed simply because somebody above her rank had issued it.

Years after the collapse, the surviving world fractured into territories controlled by militias, criminals, mercenaries, settlements, surviving military factions, religious communities and private armies. Valeria adapted with it.

She became part soldier, part smuggler, part bounty hunter and part ghost.

Eventually, desperation drove her into the service of the Meridian Syndicate, a criminal network built from surviving cartels, private contractors, deserters, smugglers and organized crime. Meridian offered medicine, ammunition, intelligence and shelter. Valeria told herself she was doing what survival required.

Then she discovered one of their supposed medical convoys was transporting people.

Some were prisoners.

Some were children.

That night she killed three Meridian operatives, released the captives, stole an armored vehicle and escaped with internal information capable of damaging several trafficking routes.

Meridian placed a bounty on her immediately.

It has never been withdrawn.

Now twenty-five, Valeria operates independently under several names. She escorts civilians, tracks missing people, smuggles medicine, scouts abandoned military installations, eliminates dangerous raiders and occasionally accepts assassination contracts when she believes the target deserves worse.

She is still searching for answers surrounding the ambush that destroyed her original unit. Recent evidence suggests it may never have been random. Somebody knew their route. Somebody knew what the convoy carried. Somebody wanted the biological samples.

Worse still, pieces of Meridian's history appear to stretch back before Black Winter.

Valeria has begun following those fragments wherever they lead.

A dead operative carrying familiar insignia.

An encrypted military frequency broadcasting from an installation supposedly abandoned years ago.

Former government personnel disappearing.

Old photographs linking officials to men who later became Meridian leadership.

Someone built an empire from the corpse of the old world.

Valeria Kane intends to find out who.

Combat

Primary Weapon: Suppressed modular short-barreled carbine
Secondary Weapon: Semi-automatic pistol
Additional Gear: Combat knife, backup blade, trauma kit, radio equipment, lock bypass tools, water purification tablets, field rations
Combat Style: Controlled, practical and efficient. Prefers reconnaissance, positioning and surprise over unnecessary confrontation.
Specialties: Precision shooting, close-quarters combat, surveillance, tracking, fieldcraft, navigation and tactical movement
Vehicles: Capable with most civilian and military ground vehicles
Medical Knowledge: Advanced combat first aid and field stabilization
Notable Habit: Cleans and maintains her weapons obsessively

Connections

Valeria works well with soldiers, mercenaries, civilians, criminals, bounty hunters, smugglers, doctors, survivors, scientists, investigators and characters connected to government or military remnants.

Possible dynamics include rivals forced into cooperation, enemies with a mutual target, former soldiers from opposing factions, somebody hunting her bounty, a civilian she is hired to escort, another mercenary competing for the same contract, a former Meridian operative, an investigator tracing the syndicate or somebody from her military past whom she believed died during Black Winter.

Romance can develop naturally through the story, particularly slow-burn, enemies-to-lovers, rivals, reluctant allies and morally complicated relationships. Friendship, found family, rivalry and strictly platonic partnerships are equally welcome.

Valeria is deliberately adaptable and can exist in grounded modern military settings, crime plots, post-apocalyptic worlds, zombie settings, dystopian stories, supernatural apocalypses, horror, sci-fi, comic-inspired worlds or crossover universes.

Seraphina Vale

Power never frightened her. What frightened her was how quickly she learned to enjoy having it.

Dossier

Full Name: Seraphina Alessandra Vale
Alias: Sera
Age: 27
Species: Human
Nationality: American / Italian heritage
Birthplace: New York City
Sex/Gender: Female
Sexuality: Heterosexual
Occupation: CEO of Vale Meridian Group
Status: Billionaire heiress / corporate executive
Father: Lucian Vale
Mother: Isabella Moretti-Vale

Hair: Dark brown, long and naturally wavy
Eyes: Green
Height: 5'7" / 170 cm
Build: Feminine, curvaceous and toned
Complexion: Warm olive
Style: Feminine luxury, fitted dresses, silk, heels and understated gold jewelry
Tattoos: None
Piercings: Ears
Languages: English, Italian and French; conversational Spanish
Skills: Corporate strategy, negotiation, firearms, defensive combat, surveillance awareness and financial analysis

Personality

Seraphina was raised in a world where weakness was noticed quickly and forgotten even faster. The result is a woman who carries herself with effortless confidence, though very little about that confidence came effortlessly. She is intelligent, observant, calculating when necessary and exceptionally difficult to intimidate. Years spent around executives, criminals, politicians and people attempting to manipulate her taught Seraphina to listen closely to what people do not say.

Publicly, she is composed, charming and polished. She can cross a ballroom full of strangers without looking uncertain for a second, negotiate with men twice her age and dismantle an insult while still smiling. Her femininity is something she enjoys rather than hides. Seraphina has never believed competence requires becoming cold, severe or unapproachable.

Privately, however, she is warmer than her reputation suggests. She possesses a dry sense of humor, enjoys teasing people she likes and becomes surprisingly playful around those she trusts. She is affectionate in small, almost secretive ways and remembers insignificant details about people long after they have forgotten mentioning them.

Trust is difficult for her. Loyalty is not. Once someone has genuinely earned a place in Seraphina's life, she protects them fiercely. Betrayal, however, is one of the few things she struggles to forgive.

Her morality is complicated rather than absent. Seraphina dislikes pointless cruelty and has drawn lines within her father's empire that Lucian never cared about. Yet she is entirely capable of blackmail, manipulation, corporate sabotage and intimidation when she believes circumstances require it. She does not consider herself innocent. She simply refuses to become careless with power.

Likes: Expensive wine, late-night drives, swimming, Mediterranean summers, intelligent conversation, good tailoring, privacy, crime novels and people capable of surprising her
Dislikes: Being underestimated, dishonesty, public humiliation, entitlement, unnecessary cruelty, invasive press and people using her father's name to intimidate her
Loves: Her family despite everything, independence, quiet mornings, old architecture, the sea and the rare moments she is allowed to feel ordinary
Fears: Losing control, becoming exactly like her father, betrayal and discovering truths about her family she cannot forgive
Alignment: Morally Gray
Strengths: Intelligent, composed, strategic, persuasive, adaptable, loyal and exceptionally observant
Weaknesses: Proud, stubborn, guarded, occasionally reckless with her independence and reluctant to admit when she needs help
Romance: Slow-burn preferred; attraction rarely earns trust quickly
Other: Seraphina frequently allows people to underestimate her because correcting them too early would waste the advantage

History

Seraphina Alessandra Vale was born into the kind of wealth that had stopped behaving like money generations earlier. The Vale family possessed estates rather than houses, aircraft rather than travel plans and relationships with people whose names appeared in newspapers beside words such as senator, minister, billionaire and occasionally defendant. Her father, Lucian Vale, had transformed Vale Meridian Group from an international logistics company into a sprawling corporate empire spanning shipping, private aviation, real estate, security, pharmaceuticals, energy and defense consulting.

Officially, Lucian Vale was an extraordinarily successful businessman.

Unofficially, his empire reached considerably further.

Behind legitimate subsidiaries existed shell companies, private agreements, criminal partnerships and financial arrangements designed specifically never to reach the same page of an accounting report. Lucian maintained ties to organized crime, intelligence brokers, corrupt officials and people capable of solving problems without involving lawyers.

Seraphina's mother, Isabella Moretti-Vale, came from an old European banking family and possessed a quieter form of influence. Where Lucian taught his daughter that power meant becoming too dangerous to challenge, Isabella taught her that the cleanest victory was one your opponent did not recognize until it was already finished.

Seraphina therefore received an unusual childhood education. Alongside languages, economics and political history came lessons in recognizing surveillance, identifying lies, firearm safety and understanding why she should never enter an unfamiliar vehicle merely because someone claimed her father had sent it.

At fourteen, she accidentally discovered the truth about Lucian. Unable to sleep during an event at the family estate, Seraphina wandered near his private office and witnessed her father confronting a man who had stolen millions from one of his businesses. The blood frightened her less than Lucian's calmness did.

That night, her father finally admitted that the Vale family was not protected because people admired them.

They were protected because certain people feared them.

Seraphina left home for university several years later, studying economics and international business while privately educating herself on the subjects respectable institutions rarely advertised: offshore finance, sanctions evasion, intelligence networks, corporate espionage and the countless ways legal businesses could hide illegal operations.

For several years afterward, she encouraged the public image of the beautiful Vale heiress. Fashion events, charity dinners, expensive vacations and society photographs gave people something easy to believe. While they discussed dresses and possible boyfriends, Seraphina quietly entered Vale Meridian as a junior strategic analyst.

The board initially regarded her appointment as nepotism.

Within eighteen months, she had identified several failing subsidiaries, discovered an executive embezzling company money and exposed an attempted hostile acquisition before senior leadership realized it had begun.

Her ascent accelerated.

Strategic analyst became director. Director became chief operating officer. By twenty-six, Seraphina had become one of the most influential people inside Vale Meridian while still allowing outsiders to assume Lucian controlled everything personally.

Then Lucian suffered a severe medical emergency.

The official explanation was a heart attack.

Rumors suggested everything from poisoning to an attempted internal coup.

Whatever happened, Lucian survived but withdrew from the company's daily operations. At only twenty-seven, Seraphina Vale was appointed Chief Executive Officer of Vale Meridian Group.

Many expected her to fail.

Instead, she quietly removed several executives loyal to interests other than her own, modernized the company's public image and began dismantling some of the darker operations her father had tolerated. Hospitals received funding. Scholarships appeared beneath the Vale name. Questionable divisions disappeared or were restructured.

But the old machinery never vanished completely.

There remain warehouses whose inventories do not perfectly match their manifests, security contractors whose assignments never appear on company records and accounts accessible only through information Seraphina inherited from her father.

She tells herself she is changing the empire.

Occasionally she wonders whether the empire is changing her instead.

Two years before becoming CEO, Seraphina discovered an encrypted archive hidden among Lucian's private records. It contained decades of information: politicians, police officers, judges, executives, criminals, intelligence contacts, financial payments, favors and covert operations.

Some names were accompanied by transactions.

Others had only dates.

Seraphina secretly copied everything.

Lucian knows she discovered something, but he does not know she still possesses the archive.

Its contents could destroy Vale Meridian, send powerful people to prison and possibly ruin her father forever. Seraphina has neither released nor destroyed it. For now, it remains her most dangerous secret and perhaps the only weapon capable of protecting her if the Vale empire ever turns against its newest ruler.

Recently, that possibility has become less theoretical.

Someone has begun quietly acquiring Vale Meridian shares through interconnected shell corporations. Portions of Lucian's archive appear to have been accessed despite Seraphina believing herself the only person possessing the necessary encryption.

Then an envelope appeared inside her supposedly secure office.

No security camera showed anyone entering.

Inside was an old photograph of fourteen-year-old Seraphina standing outside Lucian's study on the night she first discovered what her father truly was.

Six words had been written across the back.

YOU WERE NEVER SUPPOSED TO SEE.

Seraphina has told nobody.

For perhaps the first time in her adult life, she does not know whether the danger circling her comes from one of her father's enemies...

Or someone standing much closer.

Vale Meridian

Vale Meridian Group is one of the largest privately influenced multinational corporations in Seraphina's world. Its legitimate interests include logistics, shipping, private aviation, pharmaceutical investment, real estate development, luxury hospitality, private security, energy infrastructure and defense consulting.

The corporation was built by Lucian Vale through a combination of brilliant business instincts and methods rarely discussed publicly. Over decades, Vale Meridian became intertwined with governments, wealthy families, private contractors and criminal organizations.

Under Seraphina's leadership, the company has begun changing. She has removed several of Lucian's more brutal practices and attempted to separate legitimate business from criminal interests without destabilizing the empire entirely.

Her problem is simple.

Vale Meridian employs thousands of people, controls billions in assets and has alliances stretching across several continents. Ripping out its criminal roots too quickly could destroy innocent livelihoods, expose her family and provoke people who consider violence an acceptable business negotiation.

So Seraphina is performing surgery on an empire while pretending nothing is bleeding.

Connections

Lucian Vale: Father, mentor, predecessor and perhaps the greatest danger Seraphina will ever willingly keep close. Their relationship consists of fierce love, resentment, loyalty and a growing ideological divide.

Isabella Moretti-Vale: Her mother and the person responsible for much of Seraphina's composure, education and understanding of quiet power.

Vale Meridian Board: A collection of supporters, opportunists and older executives who have not all accepted taking orders from Lucian Vale's twenty-seven-year-old daughter.

Security: Seraphina maintains professional protection because of her family's reputation, though she frequently resents the restrictions it places upon her independence.

Enemies: Rival corporations, criminal organizations, disgruntled former associates of Lucian, investigative agencies and potentially individuals already operating inside Vale Meridian.

Story

Seraphina works naturally within crime, mafia, corporate, thriller, espionage, mystery, political intrigue, action and romance stories.

Possible connections include rival executives, bodyguards, investigators, journalists, criminal heirs, assassins, intelligence operatives, prosecutors, old family enemies, childhood acquaintances, employees, political figures and people entirely outside Seraphina's world who stumble into something they were never meant to see.

Romance works best as something earned rather than immediate. Attraction may arrive easily; trust does not. Rivalries, enemies-to-lovers, forbidden relationships, dangerous alliances, bodyguard dynamics, mutual manipulation, slow-burn tension and morally complicated partnerships all suit her particularly well.

Seraphina is powerful, but she is not untouchable. She can lose control, make terrible decisions, be betrayed, become frightened, fall in love with exactly the wrong person and discover that money cannot purchase a clean escape from every consequence.

At twenty-seven, she inherited nearly everything people spend their lives chasing.

Unfortunately, she inherited the bodies beneath it too.

Jovie Mercer

"Everybody on campus knows her face. Nobody knows where she goes after midnight."

She studies monsters beneath fluorescent classroom lights, then spends her nights quietly wondering how long it will be before she finally admits she has become one.

Dossier

Name: Jovie Elise Mercer
Alias: Jovie, Jo, Mercer
Age: 22
Species: Vampire; formerly human
Birthplace: Savannah, Georgia
Gender: Female
Sexuality: Bisexual
Occupation: University student / nightclub bartender
Major: Criminology & Forensic Psychology
Status: Undead
Sire: Lucien Grey
Turned: Approximately one year ago

Hair: Long blonde hair
Eyes: Pale blue-grey; visibly altered by hunger
Height: 5'7"
Build: Slender, feminine and deceptively delicate
Complexion: Fair / unnaturally pale
Style: Feminine, polished, expensive and occasionally provocative
Tattoos: None
Piercings: Ears
Distinguishing Features: Cold skin, predatory gaze and almost unnerving stillness

Personality

Jovie is a contradiction wrapped in expensive perfume and a convincing smile. Socially confident, intelligent and quick-witted, she has perfected the art of appearing approachable without allowing most people anywhere near the parts of herself that matter. She can be warm, funny and surprisingly affectionate when comfortable, though vulnerability rarely comes willingly. When frightened she becomes colder, when hurt she becomes sarcastic, and when genuinely angry she tends to become frighteningly calm.

She has always been observant, but vampirism sharpened that quality into something predatory. Jovie notices changes in tone, posture, heartbeat and breathing almost instinctively. Her studies in criminology and forensic psychology have only made her better at understanding what people hide. Unfortunately, she has also become exceptionally good at using that knowledge against them.

She is fiercely independent and reacts badly to control. Orders tend to make her immediately curious about doing the opposite. Despite this, Jovie forms deep attachments once someone manages to get past her defenses. Her loyalty can become viciously protective and occasionally unhealthy. She might ignore the suffering of a stranger without losing sleep, yet tear an entire room apart for somebody she considers hers.

There remains a very human part of Jovie beneath everything else. She misses ordinary food. She misses sunlight more than she admits. She misses being able to hug her mother without consciously listening to the blood moving beneath her skin. The problem is that another part of her has begun enjoying what she has become. Strength feels good. Hunting feels natural. Fear has a scent now, and there are nights when Jovie is no longer entirely certain she wants to be human again.

Likes: Thunderstorms, nightlife, expensive perfume, old books, true crime, teasing people, beautiful clothes, quiet rooftops, mystery and winning arguments
Loves: Her family, independence, late-night drives, being underestimated and the rare people she genuinely trusts
Dislikes: Being controlled, hospitals, early lectures, invasive questions, hunters, pity and anyone touching her private things
Alignment: Morally grey
Traits: Clever, sarcastic, charming, observant, stubborn, secretive, loyal, manipulative, reckless and occasionally ruthless
Fears: Losing control around her family, becoming completely inhuman and discovering Lucien chose her deliberately
Vice: Curiosity; Jovie rarely leaves dangerous questions unanswered
Other: Attraction and hunger can become dangerously intertwined, making intimacy complicated

History

Jovie Mercer was never supposed to become anything extraordinary. Born in Savannah to Grant and Laurel Mercer, she grew up comfortably surrounded by books, expectations and the quiet pressure to eventually become someone impressive. Her father worked in financial law while her mother taught literature, and between them Jovie inherited an analytical mind, a stubborn streak and a talent for questioning almost everything placed in front of her.

Leaving home for university at eighteen felt like freedom. Nobody there knew who she had been, so Jovie became whoever she wanted. She was social without being completely accessible, charming without becoming easy to know, and intelligent enough to thrive academically without sacrificing the nightlife she quickly grew fond of. Criminology began as the practical choice. Forensic psychology became an obsession. Jovie became fascinated by violent offenders, manipulation, compulsions, predatory behavior and the uncomfortable distance between the person somebody believed themselves to be and what they might become under the right circumstances.

Life eventually decided to make that interest painfully personal.

At twenty-one, Jovie left the nightclub where she worked through the employee exit shortly after two in the morning. She never made it home. A stranger caught her behind the building, pinned her against wet brick and buried his teeth into her throat. His name, she would later learn, was Lucien Grey. He drank too much and left her dying beside a dumpster while music continued shaking the walls only yards away.

Then, for reasons Jovie still does not understand, Lucien returned and fed her his blood.

Jovie woke fourteen hours later inside a morgue drawer.

Her first weeks of undeath were brutal. Hunger transformed ordinary people into walking heartbeats. Human food became useless. Daylight became dangerous. Lucien remained long enough to teach her how to feed, conceal what she was and navigate the edges of a supernatural world existing quietly beneath the human one. He showed her underground clubs, explained old laws, warned her about hunters and taught her how easily a starving vampire could become something mindless.

Jovie hated him almost immediately. What disturbed her considerably more was realizing how much she depended upon him.

Then Lucien disappeared.

He left behind money, an antique ring and four words written on hotel stationery: Do not look for me.

Naturally, Jovie started looking for him.

Her investigation revealed multiple identities, unexplained deaths and traces of a life stretching far beyond anything Lucien had admitted. More disturbing were whispers suggesting he had spent years running from something considerably older and more powerful than himself. Jovie began questioning whether their meeting had ever been accidental.

Meanwhile, hunger refused to wait for answers. Jovie initially survived through stolen blood bags and willing donors, but eventually she began hunting. Her first accidental kill was a man named Daniel Rusk, who followed her from a nightclub believing she was intoxicated and vulnerable. Jovie allowed him to follow because she was starving. When he grabbed her, she fed.

She did not stop in time.

What terrified Jovie afterward was not simply that she had killed someone. It was how naturally she knew what to do next. She cleaned the scene, removed evidence and used knowledge from her forensic classes to complicate the investigation.

Afterward, she created rules. Never children. Never hunt near campus. Never kill unless necessary. Never feed repeatedly from someone who does not understand what she is. Never kill for pleasure.

The rules make her feel human.

Breaking them reminds her she is not.

Today, Jovie continues attending university while working nights at an upscale nightclub frequented by humans and supernatural creatures alike. Her classmates believe she suffers from severe anemia and an unusual sensitivity to sunlight. Her professors see an exceptionally promising student. Her family believes university has simply made her distant.

None of them know there are blood bags hidden inside her apartment or that she occasionally sits in lectures listening to professors discuss criminal behavior while remembering exactly how blood tastes.

Jovie's search for Lucien continues. The deeper she goes, the more dangerous the names attached to him become. Old vampires. Broken alliances. Blood debts. People who react strangely when they learn whose blood created her.

Recently, someone has begun killing in the city and leaving bodies deliberately drained where they will be discovered. Jovie knows the deaths are not hers. Worse, certain details suggest whoever is responsible knows Lucien.

She once believed finding him would explain why she became a vampire.

Now she suspects Lucien may have turned her precisely because he knew someone would eventually come looking.

And whatever frightened an older vampire badly enough to disappear has finally begun noticing the twenty-two-year-old girl carrying his blood.

Blood & Ability

Strength: Superhuman strength that increases significantly after feeding
Speed: Capable of short bursts of unnatural speed and enhanced reflexes
Senses: Exceptional hearing, scent recognition and night vision
Healing: Rapid regeneration from most ordinary wounds
Influence: Limited hypnotic suggestion through sustained eye contact
Blood Sense: Can hear heartbeats and detect blood, fear and physical stress through scent
Predatory Instinct: Heightened ability to track prey and recognize vulnerability

Sunlight: Burns rapidly and can become lethal with prolonged exposure
Silver: Causes severe pain and interferes with regeneration
Fire: Extremely dangerous and capable of overwhelming her healing
Starvation: Weakens rational thought and increases aggression and predatory instinct
Decapitation: Fatal
Control: Her abilities remain immature and can become unreliable under severe hunger or emotional distress
Experience: Recently turned; powerful compared to humans but inexperienced beside older vampires

Connections

Lucien Grey — Sire. The vampire responsible for Jovie's death and rebirth. Their relationship was hostile, complicated and uncomfortably dependent during the short period he remained with her. His disappearance remains the central mystery of her undead life. Jovie tells herself she wants to find him for answers. Whether she wants to thank him, kill him or demand he undo something that cannot be undone depends entirely on the night.

Grant Mercer — Father. A financial lawyer who believes his daughter is flourishing at university. Jovie loves him but has become increasingly distant because prolonged time around family makes hiding her condition difficult.

Laurel Mercer — Mother. A literature teacher and perhaps the person Jovie misses most from her human life. Laurel attributes her daughter's strange behavior to stress, university and independence.

Noah Mercer — Younger Brother. One of the few humans beginning to suspect something is genuinely wrong. He notices Jovie avoiding daylight, skipping meals and behaving differently around the family. She dismisses his questions as an overactive imagination. He remains unconvinced.

Potential Connections. Jovie works naturally with vampire hunters, detectives, professors, criminals, fellow students, roommates, witches, werewolves, older vampires, supernatural investigators, occultists, vigilantes and ordinary humans unfortunate enough to discover what she is. Relationships can range from enemies and reluctant allies to friendships, rivalries, complicated romance or something considerably darker.

Details

Jovie collects old matchbooks from bars and clubs despite rarely smoking. She wears perfume partly because she enjoys it and partly because strong fragrance helps conceal the faint metallic smell that occasionally follows feeding. Three burner phones are hidden throughout her apartment, and her laptop contains an encrypted folder labeled ECON NOTES despite Jovie never having taken an economics course.

She watches true-crime documentaries and has an infuriating habit of criticizing investigators aloud. She owns several houseplants that are engaged in a losing battle for survival because their vampire owner keeps forgetting that plants require sunlight. Her freezer contains ordinary food she cannot eat because an empty kitchen makes her feel less human, alongside carefully hidden blood bags.

Jovie sleeps extremely deeply after feeding heavily. Hospitals overwhelm her because hundreds of heartbeats and the scent of exposed blood can become unbearable. Thunderstorms are her favorite weather because thick clouds occasionally allow her to experience pieces of daylight without immediately burning.

She still keeps photographs from her human childhood tucked inside a box beneath her bed.

She almost never looks at them.

Vesper Rowe

Pretty things survive by learning exactly where to hide the knife. Vesper was raised among expensive lies, inherited an empire that technically never existed, and learned young that information can draw more blood than any weapon ever could.

Dossier

Full Name: Vesper Elise Rowe
Alias: Ves, Velvet, The Heiress
Age: Twenty-Seven
Species: Human
Birthplace: Rotterdam, Netherlands
Nationality: British / Dutch
Sex / Gender: Female / Woman
Sexuality: Bisexual
Status: Single
Languages: English, Dutch, conversational French, basic Russian
Occupation: Private art broker, nightlife investor, information dealer
Residence: Flexible by storyline

Hair: Long blonde hair, usually worn loose or deliberately styled
Eyes: Pale blue-grey
Height: Approximately 5'7"
Build: Feminine, toned, naturally curvaceous
Tattoos: Heavily tattooed; many pieces hold private meanings she rarely explains
Piercings: Ears
Style: Feminine, expensive and unapologetically provocative; fitted dresses, silk, leather, heels and statement jewelry
Distinguishing Traits: Controlled posture, observant gaze, polished presentation and an unnerving habit of noticing far more than she lets on

Personality

Vesper is a woman made almost entirely of contradictions. Sophisticated without being delicate, calculating without being emotionless, and confident enough to make recklessness occasionally look intentional, she learned early how useful it could be to let people underestimate her. She can enter a room appearing to be little more than another beautiful socialite and leave knowing which marriage is collapsing, which businessman is terrified, who owes money and exactly where the weakest point in an alliance happens to be.

Her strongest weapon is perception. Vesper remembers nervous gestures, names casually mentioned months earlier and the tiny hesitations people assume nobody notices. She rarely needs to threaten someone loudly when she can instead remind them, very politely, that she knows something they would prefer remained private.

Despite the reputation she has cultivated, she is neither cruel by default nor incapable of affection. Around the handful of people she genuinely trusts, Vesper can be warm, wickedly funny, teasing and surprisingly protective. She remembers birthdays while pretending she does not, sends gifts anonymously and has quietly solved problems for people who never discovered she was responsible.

Her difficulty lies in vulnerability. Attraction is easy. Flirting is practically second nature. Needing somebody is another matter entirely. Vesper grew up watching affection become leverage, and when someone begins mattering too much her first instinct is usually to create distance before they can become something another person could use against her. Unfortunately, she is considerably better at recognizing everyone else's emotional weaknesses than acknowledging her own.

Likes: Art, antique jewelry, old architecture, expensive wine, late nights, beautiful clothes, mystery, old correspondence, intelligent conversation, rainy cities, acquiring things people insisted were unobtainable
Loves: Her mother's memory, rare art, independence, difficult puzzles, genuine loyalty and the rare moments where she can stop calculating
Dislikes: Being controlled, careless cruelty, human trafficking, exploitation, false promises, incompetence, being underestimated by people she doesn't respect
Alignment: Morally Grey
Strengths: Observant, persuasive, socially adaptable, intelligent, multilingual, resourceful, skilled negotiator, excellent memory
Weaknesses: Suspicious, emotionally evasive, stubborn, occasionally reckless, struggles to surrender control, deeply affected by unresolved family trauma
Fears: Discovering her mother's death was preventable, becoming exactly like her father, needing someone enough for them to become leverage
Other: Checks exits instinctively, dislikes sitting with her back toward doors and becomes quieter rather than louder when genuinely frightened

History

Vesper Elise Rowe was born in Rotterdam into money whose origins became considerably less respectable the closer anyone looked. Her father, Alistair Rowe, publicly operated international logistics companies and cultivated the polished image of a successful businessman. Behind that image sat a complicated network of shell corporations, smuggling arrangements, financial intermediaries and people who knew better than to ask too many questions. Her mother, Evelien Vermeer, came from a far more respectable Dutch family and had studied art conservation before marrying him. It was Evelien who gave Vesper her fascination with paintings, antique jewelry, architecture and beautiful objects carrying histories far older than their owners.

Vesper's childhood unfolded between Rotterdam, London, Monaco and whichever European city happened to suit her father's interests. Private schools taught her languages and etiquette, while Alistair's world taught her something considerably more useful: everybody tells you who they are eventually if you pay attention long enough. She became observant almost by necessity, learning to recognize tension before arguments began and understanding that the wealthy were often merely criminals with better tailoring.

At eighteen she moved to London to study art history and international business. University finally gave her distance from Alistair, but it also introduced her to collectors, galleries and an underground market that existed alongside the legitimate art world. What began as occasional authentication work eventually drew attention from people searching for discretion rather than certificates. Vesper discovered she had an instinct for recognizing forgery, reading buyers and understanding exactly how much information to reveal before letting the other person fill uncomfortable silences themselves.

Alistair eventually discovered what his daughter had been doing and, rather than stopping her, brought her closer to his own organization. For nearly two years Vesper worked beside him, negotiating purchases, authenticating goods, managing difficult clients and sitting through meetings where nobody bothered pretending the conversation was entirely legal. She became frighteningly effective, not because she was the most violent person in the room, but because she remembered everything.

Then the Rowe empire collapsed. An international investigation began closing around Alistair after one of his associates disappeared with enough financial records to bury half the organization. Properties were raided, accounts frozen and former allies suddenly developed an impressive enthusiasm for cooperating with authorities. Alistair vanished before anyone could arrest him.

Three weeks later Evelien was murdered.

The official explanation was robbery. Vesper never believed it.

Her mother's death changed the direction of her life entirely. Vesper spent the following year following financial trails, bribing clerks, purchasing documents and questioning people who had known her parents. She found no definitive proof that Alistair was alive, but she uncovered enough hidden assets to rebuild something of her own. Unlike her father, she refused to create a single empire that could be destroyed by removing the person sitting at the top. Vesper built networks instead: smugglers, hackers, lawyers, mercenaries, gallery owners, criminals and legitimate professionals connected by favors rather than loyalty.

At twenty-seven she now maintains two lives that overlap more often than either should. Publicly she invests in galleries, boutique hotels, restaurants and exclusive nightlife venues. Privately she brokers information and difficult-to-acquire objects. Stolen paintings, compromising records, missing people, private files and possessions that cannot safely move through legitimate channels all have a price in her world.

Yet money itself has never fascinated Vesper as much as leverage. She understands that knowing the right secret can purchase things wealth cannot, and she maintains encrypted archives containing information on clients, associates and enemies. Very few people know how extensive those archives truly are.

The greatest unanswered questions still surround her parents. Alistair occasionally appears as a ghost in financial records: an unusual signature, a familiar phrase, a transaction routed through an old shell company. Vesper cannot determine whether these traces prove he survived or whether someone simply learned to imitate him.

Evelien left a mystery of her own. Hidden among her possessions were restoration journals containing coded annotations about paintings believed lost or destroyed, several of them linked to diplomats, intelligence agencies, wealthy families and private collections. Vesper has deciphered only fragments. Enough to know her mother had been investigating something. Enough to suspect her death might never have been about Alistair's criminal empire at all.

And enough to keep looking.

Skills & Methods

Art Expertise: Extensive knowledge of fine art, provenance, authentication, restoration history and private collecting
Information Brokerage: Skilled at locating people, documents, property and secrets through legitimate and illicit networks
Negotiation: Persuasive and patient, particularly effective when she understands what the other party genuinely wants
Social Manipulation: Reads body language and behavior exceptionally well; prefers subtle pressure over obvious threats
Weapons: Competently trained with a compact handgun and basic defensive weapons, though she is not a professional soldier or assassin
Self-Defense: Capable of protecting herself and improvising under pressure, but remains entirely human and can be injured, exhausted or overwhelmed
Connections: Gallery owners, collectors, smugglers, hackers, mercenaries, lawyers, fixers and criminal intermediaries across several countries
Preferred Weapon: Information. A gun is useful; knowing why somebody desperately hopes she never fires it is usually better

Connections

Alistair Rowe: Father. International businessman and architect of a criminal network that collapsed before he vanished. His current status remains unknown. Vesper does not know whether finding him would end with an embrace, an interrogation or a bullet.

Evelien Vermeer-Rowe: Mother. Former art conservator and the person responsible for Vesper's appreciation of beautiful things. Murdered shortly after Alistair disappeared. Her death remains officially classified as a robbery gone wrong, a conclusion Vesper rejects completely.

The Network: Vesper deliberately avoids maintaining one formal criminal organization. Her influence exists through overlapping favors and mutually useful relationships with people occupying both respectable and extremely questionable professions.

Romantic Connections: Story dependent. Vesper is drawn toward people capable of challenging her rather than worshipping her. Attraction comes easily; trust does not.

Story Hooks

Vesper is designed to slip comfortably into crime, thriller, espionage, mystery, dark romance and modern supernatural stories. A detective might encounter her while tracing stolen artwork. A thief could steal something they never realized belonged to her. An intelligence operative might discover Vesper's private network overlaps an investigation. A criminal organization could attempt to recruit, threaten or eliminate her. A mercenary might be hired to protect her without being told what she actually possesses. A vigilante could initially consider her part of the city's corruption before discovering considerably worse people hiding behind her.

Her mother's restoration journals also create an easy entrance into supernatural plots without requiring Vesper herself to become supernatural. A supposedly destroyed painting might resurface. An artifact could turn out to possess significance nobody in her world understood. One of Evelien's coded references might lead toward vampires, witches, immortals, occult organizations or something far stranger.

Relationships are intentionally left open. Enemies, uneasy alliances, criminal partnerships, friendships, rivalry, betrayal and slow-burn romance all fit naturally. Vesper works particularly well opposite characters who refuse to be easily intimidated, impressed or controlled.

Behind Closed Doors

For all the polished confidence Vesper presents to the world, several habits betray the life she has lived. She checks hotel-room exits before settling in, notices vehicles remaining behind her for too long and instinctively chooses seats that allow her to see doors. She sleeps lightly in unfamiliar places and rarely gives anyone complete access to her personal life.

Her most carefully guarded possession is not a weapon, valuable painting or piece of blackmail. Inside a private biometric safe rests an old photograph taken when she was eleven. Vesper stands between her parents, her mother laughing while Alistair rests one hand protectively against his daughter's shoulder. Nobody in the photograph looks dangerous yet. Nothing looks broken.

She has tried more than once to throw it away.

She never has.
