O, MOTHER. BETRAYAL IS CRUEL.
in the dead of night, the coven's favored child, elain found herself called to. called by a voice neither human nor witch. neither evil nor friendly. it was an ancient pull, a seep of power promised if only she'd follow the sound. for nights she ignored it. lost sleep over this taunting curse. until finally she gave in. weak-willed and tired, she stalked her grand manor's halls. descending to its chambers. the basement all knew to avoid.
an old tale of their history describes these witches as allies of the gods. eternal, forever young women blessed by powers beyond all others but them. the legends say that the witches dined with the gods, lived by their side, and then one day all those tales turned to hushed whispers. a mere fairy tale. a story elain has heard many times. the gods disappeared one day, but they've left them a parting gift. their eternal power. the blue blood that now marks their veins. immortality promised only to them.
yet, the tale was wrong.
elain walked and walked, followed that ancient hum in her ear. until an iron door stood before her, marked by spells she could hardly understand. and to that the voice offered help. led her. led her hand as she touched the sigils on the doors one by one, in whatever order this being knew. and then it cracked. the spells falling as the doors opened before her.
it was dark, save for a single lit up cage. within it an owl stared back at the girl. its head twitched as she came closer, the voice suddenly out of her head. no, she could hear it. but it wasn't where it once was. the source changed, now belonging to the caged creature. somehow realization hit her. somehow she knew what this being was. she knew that owl was no animal.
it was a god. a god kept in a cage, oozing in power unknown to her.
and the god spoke, led her as he did with the doors. his tale was that of betrayal. of power-hungry matrons and their wars. some curse they've forged using the gods' very blood bound them to these bodies. mere forest creatures becoming nothing but a source of power. their fate leading to nothing but these few iron bars around them.
she felt pity. she felt sorry. for the sins of her mother and many before her. and so the owl said to her, "if you wish for forgiveness, save us."
a please she was terrified to accept. so scared, yet she agreed. it was not her who agreed, no, no she did not want this. elain was a daughter of many blessings. a child her mother bred to obey only her, and yet something within her moved that night. had her running far away from her home, no bag nor money by her side. just a nightgown and the forest seperating her home from the bustling city of ridius. she was exhuasted, her legs burning.
it was only once she stopped had she regained her thoughts. regained her consciousness. somehow, she had left. betrayed her coven. and the god on her shoulders was to blame. the weak animal only capable of abusing a smiget of its own power. but he knew elain could channel that. as any witch does. and he knew such a weak-will would be easy to lead. to trick into releasing the vengeful gods upon the earth.
