Traveler, you are home. The Outer Sanctum welcomes

Rules:

First and foremost, the Outer Sanctum is a part of writerssanctum.com and follows the same general guidelines as the rest of the site. This is to say that all characters must be 18+ years old.
Sexual content is permitted, but smut is not. Sex cannot be the primary focus of a story and while it is permitted, scenes should not be extended or graphic. There are other areas of the site which cater to this type of content, we ask that those RPs be located there. Sexual content that goes against the Rules of the Sanctum are prohibited.

Characters:

All characters must have a character sheet and are subject to veto upon review. We have provided a character sheet for your convenience (though you can make your own if you prefer so long as the required information is provided). Please note that generally speaking characters will be approved so long as they do not violate any of the Outer Sanctum rules. As an example, characters cannot be gods but can play a character that thinks that they are a god and has delusions of grandeur. Please note that whether other characters believe your character is up to them. Once a character has been approved, they can begin their story in any location of the Outer Sanctum except for Sha'Yogeth.

Magic:

Magic in the Outer Sanctum is capped by the gods. While items and abilities of great power exist, the powers that characters have access to should grow over time and can never be extreme. Powers that alter things on a molecular level, or that allow access to extreme abilities, are not permitted.

Combat

As the Outer Sanctum is for storytelling, and conflict will always exist in stories, combat may be a part of these stories. Combat must be mutually agreed upon, and the outcome predetermined. Remember, while your character might be willing to die in any given conflict, not all players share this view. "Autoing" attacks, injuries, spells, death, etc., is strictly not allowed. If two players agree in advance to leave the outcome of a conflict to chance, either T1 combat or dice rolls can be used to achieve this aim. Please note that unless a player explicitly agrees to put their character's life on the line, all combat is assumed to be non-lethal.

FAQ

What can I play?

While there is an asterisk on it, you can generally play whatever you want. All of the Inner Sanctum's rules apply to the Outer Sanctum as well. Please note that as noted elsewhere, characters cannot be gods or have divine powers that allow them to alter the world in a substantive way.

Why does my character need to be approved?

Because the Outer Sanctum is a single realm where events can have far-reaching influence, it's important for the setting to not have characters that fundamentally break the immersion or the world. For example, because the setting is a mild power setting, players are not permitted to play gods or characters with powers that have world-breaking abilities. Approval for your character should be very fast, and while most types of characters will be approved within a day or so. In the event that your character is not acceptable for some reason, you will be notified of the issue so that it can be corrected. We will always do our best to ensure that your character remains as close to your vision as is reasonably possible.

What races are allowed?

Generally speaking, "fantasy" races are permitted. This classification includes races which are traditionally considered to be fantasy races (things like dwarves, elves, orcs, etc.) but can also include things like unicorns or dragons. Things like robots are not permitted (these would be science fiction) but creatures like automata do exist (and are always non-sentient and incapable of rational thought).

What races are banned?

While the Outer Realms is a vast and nearly infinite realm, some races are not permitted. Generally speaking, races that exist in fandoms that are specific to that fandom are not permitted in the Outer Realms. As a few examples, Timelords from Dr. Who or Saiyans from Dragonball Z are specific to their respective canons and are thus not permitted in the Outer Realms. Races like demons, elves, etc., while they might appear in any given fandom, are broadly speaking not exclusive to them. If you are not sure if a race is permitted, please reach out to us and we can let you know.

Further to this, because the Outer Realms are a "mild power" setting, characters cannot be gods. Characters cannot be functionally immortal (though they can be races that live for extremely long periods of time) and while some races can be very hardy (dragons, constructs, etc.) anything that exists in the Outer Realms is something that can die. A reminder, just because your character can die, doesn't mean that they will. This specific rules is to ensure that no characters are introduced into the world that can break the consistency of the setting.
