History: Created by Cerberus during the Lazarus Project, Jane Shepard was a skinless, tank-bound clone initially intended to provide spare organs and limbs for the real Commander Shepard. After Cerberus secured Shepard’s Spectre dossier, the Illusive Man deprioritized the clone, leaving overseer Miranda Lawson to use it for basic testing. In 2184, Cerberus ordered the clone's termination, but Agent Rasa (later known as Maya Brooks) defied orders, sparked a violent shootout at the Lazarus Research Station, and fled with the clone. Rasa hid the stasis tank in places such as an asteroid orbiting Themis, keeping the clone in storage until six months before the 2186 Reaper invasion.
Upon awakening the clone, Brooks used neural implants to help it learn how to function as a human during the real Shepard’s incarceration. Lacking the Commander's actual memories, the clone could not flawlessly impersonate Shepard while the original was still alive. To bypass this, the clone and Brooks devised a plan to eliminate the real Shepard and her allies, hiring the CAT6 private military corporation to assassinate the original so the clone could assume Shepard's identity and push a pro-human agenda.
Shortly after Cerberus' attempted coup on the Citadel, Commander Shepard's clone initiates a plot to steal the original’s identity while the real Commander is on shore leave. Operating behind the scenes, the clone buys weaponry for her CAT6 mercenaries through arms dealer Elijah Khan and hacks classified databases to retrieve Shepard's files. She sets a lethal trap at a Silversun Strip sushi restaurant, successfully securing Shepard's Spectre code while the Commander barely escapes. To cover her tracks, the clone has Khan executed via her accomplice Maya Brooks, then uses the stolen Spectre code to infiltrate the Citadel Archives, luring Shepard into a second confrontation.
Disguised in CAT6 armor while falsely holding Brooks hostage, the clone reveals her identity, life story, and motivations during a firefight with Shepard’s squad. She uses a signal blocker to intercept transmissions, enabling her to steal the Normandy SR-2's command codes and trick Specialist Samantha Traynor into prepping the ship for launch. Although Shepard thwarts an immediate execution order, the clone succeeds in locking the Commander and squad inside an iridium vault. Before leaving to claim the ship, the clone updates Shepard's official military records with her own biometrics, pointing out that handprints cannot be replicated.
With the real Commander temporarily trapped, the clone boards the Normandy and assumes full command, firing Traynor and discarding Shepard's personal cabin belongings. Upon discovering that Shepard escaped the vault and boarded the vessel, the clone orders her CAT6 troops to delay the Commander while she equips N7 armor in the armory. A pitched battle breaks out in the shuttle bay as the ship tries to exit the Citadel. When Joker and Cortez prevent the Normandy from jumping to FTL speed, the clone deploys a Kodiak shuttle to eliminate the pilots, leaving the hangar doors wide open during the fight.
The battle reaches its climax when Shepard tackles the clone, causing both to fall down the open boarding ramp and cling to the edge. Demanding to know what makes the real Commander special, the clone watches as Shepard's squadmates—whom the clone had dismissed as emotional baggage—reach down to save their leader. Abandoned by Brooks, the clone refuses Shepard's offer of aid, letting go of the ledge and falling to her death.
She didn’t die, though; she fell onto a passing skycar. She was extremely injured. Her face was damaged beyond recognition. Aria was aware of the problems Commander Shepard had at the restaurant and throughout the ward. She didn’t know the full extent of the problems, and she didn’t know about the clone, but she did see the clone fall from the Normandy and land on the skycar. She had her people move in and secure the clone first.
The clone was given immediate medical help and sent to an off-the-books black-site medical facility. A DNA test revealed this was Commander Shepard, but Aria knew this couldn’t be Commander Shepard. She laughed when she realized what Cerberus did and did not accomplish. The surgeons were forced to amputate the clone's limbs due to the damage, and they had to remove the eyes. The facility had plenty of Asari-made prosthetics, so they were used instead. Normally, synthetic skin was grown and placed on the prosthetics, but Aria didn’t want to spend the money on it for several reasons. The clone was also given extensive facial reconstruction surgery.
The clone was kept in a medically induced coma until it was safe to bring her out of the coma. She was eventually moved to Omega after the original Shepard helped Aria liberate Omega from Cerberus. The doctors on Omega eventually brought the clone out of her medically induced coma after the Reaper invasion was over.
The clone needed a year of extensive physical therapy to become accustomed to her Asari prosthetics. At first, she was nearly completely dependent upon others to do anything. Most of the people that were there to help her were aliens, the very people she was taught to hate. In the immediate aftermath of the Reaper War, the clone watched as Omega became an essential and central trading hub in the Terminus Systems. She watched Aria focus on helping the Terminus Systems rebuild; she wasn’t doing it out of the kindness of heart. She was doing it because it meant more profit now and later, because if everyone was struggling to survive, no one was doing business. She saw that helping people changed Aria. Being reliant on the aliens and watching Aria change had the effect of changing the clone. A fact the clone was not aware of until halfway through her eleventh month of rehab; by that point she was nearly done. It was during one of her many walks around the station that Blood Pack idiots started causing problems. She used her Carnage ability several times in rapid succession. She killed all five in five blasts of Carnage. She fired without thinking. She didn’t have to; they weren’t causing her any problems or causing problems for humans. She fired to protect aliens. Part of her recoiled in shame. A larger, quieter part was proud. She knelt down and picked up a Blood Pack Punisher that landed by her feet.
Once her physical therapy was complete, Aria gave the clone a simple but time-consuming task: the mercenary groups Eclipse, Blue Suns, and Blood Pack were a thorn in her side and posed a threat to her legitimacy efforts; the clone was to bring them into the fold of the recently rebranded Talon Security. Nyreen Kandros’ mercenary group was reorganized into a police force. The clone was told to get it done by any means necessary that didn’t alert the Citadel. So that the clone could travel freely, she was given the identity of Sabine Wolfe. Sabine & Nyreen spent the better part of a year tracking down the leadership of the three mercenary groups. Any who refused to join the Talon Security were eliminated. After the mercenaries were brought under Nyreen’s control, they returned to Omega; Nyreen was named the Director of Public Safety, and Sabine was named Director of Security & Intelligence. Sabine wasn’t a desk-riding Director; she moved freely about the galaxy. Aria gave Sabine the Aegis the sister ship of the SR-2 Normandy, which Cerberus put into service just before the occupation of Omega.
