Upbringingβ β¦
Born as Lune Evernight, she lived a relatively normal life as a second-born daughter to House Evernight, etiquette, RP accent, mother trying to cultivate ladylike interests in her (music, embroidery, etc).
From a young age, she preferred staying in the estate's library, or even going on hunting trips with her father, which had frustrated Stella, as she had absolutely no interest in the feminine interests.
Tensions boiled over when she was thirteen. Celeste was turning sixteen, and Stella was preparing to debut her, which meant she could not have a rebellious and questioning daughter around to ruin the prospects. So Stella decided to exile her to her estranged sister, the black sheep of their generation, Nyx Evernight.
She thought it would be a punishment - by taking away her wayward daughter's luxuries (maids, servants, designer outfits), she figured it wouldn't be long before she begged to return and fall in line.
Exiled to Aunt Nyx, Lune died in the streets of our equivalent of Birmingham, while Artemis was reborn, dropping her RP accent for a Brummie accent (similar to how Powder died, Jinx was born, when Silco took her in, during Arcane).
Aunt Nyx taught her the core philosophy: βtrust no one with your finances and independence, except for yourselfβ, and gave her a 10,000 pound allowance each year, but highly recommended her to invest, and be financially independent.
Over the years, alongside her annual allowance, and investment interest, she also took part in underground duelling and fights for money, and occasionally took bounties for the cash rewards.
She became an excellent enforcer for her aunt, running protection rackets, collections, and intelligence trading in the day, while also amassing fortunes in the night.
At age seventeen, the war reached a boiling point, and her father, who had never quite forgiven Stella for her actions of exiling his favoured second-born, enlisted. He died in combat. The main branch (Stella and Celeste) didn't even bother to notify them, and it was in the papers that Nyx and Artemis saw the names of the fallen.
Her first visit back to the capital, some time after the funeral - a tense standoff with Celeste, who she hasn't seen/heard from since her exile, and the lines, βI thought, maybe you could love me like you used to. Even though I'mβ¦ different. But you changed too. Soβ¦ Here's to the new us.β βLune died in a ditch, sister. My name is Artemis.β and βHe was MY father too.β
After that, she went back to Aunt Nyx in Birmingham, and this is when she finally sheds the final remnants of Lune, and vows to never be vulnerable or get attached again.
She took more to Nyxβs teachings and mob duties - as to her, Stella and Celeste were effectively dead to her from the day they decided that she didn't deserve to know of her father's death and that they didn't want their exiled daughter back for his funeral just because of how the ton would have perceived it
More underground duels, gambling, bartending, and bounties - all to amass herself a fortune nobody else could ever take from her. Over the years, she also gained the respect from Nyxβs men, who all but see her as the bossβ daughter at this point, as she is also highly efficient.
Of course, we can't forget about the main branch still in the capital. When Artemis is twenty-one, Celeste is twenty-four, and to Stella, she needs the ton to stop asking about her youngest, so she pulls rank as the Main Branch family head (older sister than Nyx, in their generation), and demands that she return to the capital to debut.
Aunt Nyx sees an opportunity - a new social club, Nocturne Club, in the capital - new money, progressive policies, and a legitimate business.
Not only is it a good source of clean money, it also provides her and her niece a place to stay which isn't with Stella, and is another way to make a statement to the ton that yes, the Wildcard Evernights are back, deal with it, with her literally naming the club Nocturne.
And, it also establishes their businesses within the capital - with Nyx leaving the mob in charge of her trusted, it shows that she has the confidence and is not weak and/or running an empire which is a house of cards. So therefore, Artemis, who is aroace will be debuting, but as a spectator.
