Hopefully Jasper has a good enough relay team with his friends if he ever needs to talk to Jophiel—a signed or lip-read conversation with the latter might be the very last one the former ever cares about…
Perhaps they could use a mirror, with Jasper and Jophiel sitting on opposite sides of a divider but able to see each other's reflection. That might have a much weaker effect or no effect at all.

Or Jasper could wear a blindfold and put his fingers to Jophiel's lips. Of course, that situation would require Jophiel has already allowed Jasper into his close confidence.

The previous Prince and Jophiel, shortly before his death:

That's pretty much my character. So in theory my character profile could be her surface story.
While I won't attempt to discourage you from any notion of your character's faction you happen to have, I want to at least put forward the idea that jumping on the Theocracy is a bit of a siren's call because of how much lore it has in-canon already compared to more individualized factions brought forward by the players. Since the worldbuilding is collaborative, I'm relying on the players to know whether the Theocracy is the most apt fit for their character idea, or whether they want to work, possibly brainstorming together, on a new kingdom or setting, like Freyja's Northlands or the Principality of Trova, rather than defaulting to the one constant piece of lore in my own ideas.

Do we have many more Organ Bearers joining the cast?

There are a couple of folks who have voiced interest to me in DMs who have either already put forward a character concept in DMs, or I'm holding out on to do so. @Denanstus , @Weis, and @Rimechapel. Other than that, I would be theoretically capping it off here, in terms of writers. Not necessarily saying everyone here has to stick to just the characters they have come up with, but not expecting anyone to double up on characters if they haven't already run that by me.

Once everyone who's 'in' either comes forward or bows out, I'll probably move this to an OOC thread, and then in due course, a roleplay thread :)

I've been musing over possible ideas for organs and the powers they vould grant.

  • A stomach that generates powerful acid that can be projectile-vomited and allows the bearer to eat anything.
  • An inner ear that grants the power to redirect gravity either for themselves or in a bubble around them.
  • A piece of skin that grants invisibility/camouflage abilities. May not affect your outfit, but at least you're invisible.
  • A piece of skin that grants adhesive abilities for climbing (might be combined with the above).
  • An eye that allows you to replicate the abilities of the last person you saw, but only one person at once.
  • A literal green thumb that grands plant growth catalyst & control abilities.
  • A heart that generates powerful electrical pulses that can be released through the hands. Your blood also becomes magnetic.
  • Lungs that allow you to blast tornado-strength wind out of your mouth. Also lets you inflate your body to float and blow yourself around in a very awkward way of flying.
  • A tongue that allows you to stretch it out a hundred feet and makes it extremely strong and prehensile. Your sense of taste doesn't become any less sensitive, so...if you try to grab someone with it, hope they have good hygeine.
  • A hand that allows you to reshape anything you touch like its made of putty. May also allow you to transmute its physical properties.
  • A gill that allows you to breath underwater. That's it, hope you live near water.
  • A tooth that turns all your teeth incredibly sharp and able to bite through anything.
  • A foot that can generate directed seismic shocks through the ground, and also allow you to use a kind of ground-sonar to sense your surroundings.

I anticipate having something that could be mistaken for a character sheet posted tonight or tomorrow! Killing one's darlings is such a sad but delicious task.

Please pardon me as I basically steal portions of every single character sheet that came before me.

Name: Lanneth Gunnebald
Age: 35
Gender: Male

Character Traits:

Pragmatic but convivial. Motivated but cautious. Sincere but sarcastic. Cocky but dubiously humble. Down to earth, perhaps one might say.

Organ: Sacred Solanum

A tuber, or root, or... something, from a strange, unknowable cosmic creature of plantlike origins. He discovered it one morning while inspecting crops for damage following the organ's falling in the field. Thinking it to be merely an exceptional vegetable, he prepared it for dinner, and his life was forever changed.

Power: Unify The Earth

Plants grow healthier and wilder when he is near. Flowers bloom in his footprints. Barren earth becomes fertile where he walks. In a wide radius - usually a few miles, but dependent upon the weather and prevalence of plantlife - his awareness extends through grass and trees and all manner of living plants. With a little concentration, he may see, or hear, or speak through these plants, or manipulate them to quickly move in ways they would not otherwise.

In a smaller, nearer patch of ground, he may focus his power to grow plants at unnatural rates, cresting decades of growth in seconds. Those plants whose lifespan is short do not simply reach the end of their natural life this way, but rather they continue to grow in size. Fruiting plants bear unnaturally large yield, flowers or other pollen-bearing structures may produce tremendous amounts of pollen, seed pods can develop volatile substances and become weapons, plants may develop fire resistant bark, corrosive sap, or other, similar properties.

Some plants, given enough time and attention, may even develop limited sapience and act autonomously. While they are eventually capable of forming their own opinions, as of yet they do not seem to run contrary to his.

Origin: Disgraced Aristocracy

His father was an oligarch of some renown, and made sure his son wanted for nothing. His education was the envy of many, but he particularly excelled in public speaking and agriculture. When forces unknown to him destroyed his father's House, Lanneth escaped with only his uncle Percival. The two lived incognito for a time, under the employ of a farmer, until that fateful twilight when Lanneth found the God Organ in the field. He and his uncle had first brought the farm to prosperity with their administrative skills and strong hands, but now they elevated it to sovereignty with miraculous harvests, guardians made from nature itself, an enormous, sentient briar which hedged in the land for miles around.

In time, he and his uncle convinced other farmers to join their confederacy, and force the nobles on whose land they worked to the negotiating table; trade, instead of tribute. Respect, instead of demands. His uncle, experienced in matters of politics, became the de facto leader of this Confederacy of Sovereign Agrarians, and Lanneth maintained the farms' prosperity.

Shortcomings: Not Of This Earth

Too much acceleration of growth will cause plants and their yield to become something other than what they once were; the transition starts slowly, but quickly ramps up as it nears the end of the plant's natural life. Vines may develop orifices, branches may develop sensory organs, trunks may develop appendages, flowers may develop narcissism.

Food made with produce that has been enhanced frequently causes those eating it to experience emotions and daydreams, or relive memories. These memories are sometimes their own. While produce subject to this power is unquestionably more delicious than its mundance counterpart, at times the emotional experience of eating it can be very bitter.

A plant must be connected to a substance in which it would normally grow in order to be affected by Lanneth's powers.

Hooks for the Game

• Not all farmers may be eager to join this Confederacy. Certainly all powers whose farmers have sided with Lanneth are unhappy.
• A powerful, sapient tree sows dissent or attempts to broker for the sovereignty of its own forest.
• A community subsisting solely on produce from the Confederacy devolves into madness.

I for one approve of anarchist agrarian communes where everyone is high off their tits.

Do you have me locked in?

Large scale rebellion
A confederacy with the abbreviation CSA
Obsessed with particular plants
Led by disgruntled aristocracy

I see where this is headed…

Prince Incognito:

I kid, obviously. Looks great Rime :P

Sudden flash of inspiration that should be a secret to the majority of the world, but anyone within the Theocracy would have a small chance of knowing, depending on their status within the hierarchy.

Superficially, there is a succession of Archons (the name for the leader of the Theocracy) which passes from one Hierophant to another through the ages as each previous one passes on.

In reality, there is one Archon, who is the world's first Organ Bearer, long before the world knew of the God-Rain. They consumed an old relic provided to them from the Heavens, the first God-Organ to ever fall, and many centuries before any others followed. It was the molted skin of a god, which gave them the power of metamorphic self-regeneration, similar to The Doctor. In other words, each Archon has taken a new appearance and name, but is actually the same underlying entity as the first Archon, whose identity may have evolved over the ages, but is an unbroken continuum of selves. It was they who brought the Theocracy to power in the first place, and through their many faces' guidances it has flourished to its current height. Only very important Saints would be privy to this information, however. To anyone else, within the Theocracy or otherwise, the surface story of a differential succession would be maintained.

I take it the Archon is sworn to a life of celibacy as a cover story for not having children?

Is it possible that over successive molts they've become increasingly unstable due to their literal personality changing so many times? Like all their previous selves are there at the back of their mind whispering to them and the more there are the more it twists at their mind?

Absolutely. Though I'm not intentionally basing the particulars of the Theocracy on the Roman Catholic church, there isn't zero overlap between the two. The Archon is nominally celibate to avoid any sort of nepotism or favoritism if their scion would become a Hierophant and be in contention for being next Archon. In reality, they are incapable of siring any heirs due to their status as an Organ Bearer. Not that they know for certain that this is the case, but more so that they have a biological barbed wire around the notion of conceiving any children. Either suspecting/knowing they are infertile, or not knowing for certain whether the process of impregnating someone/being impregnated (the various versions of the Archon have not all been the same biological sex or gender) would be survivable, and whether the offspring (on the offchance one is delivered) would even be recognizably human and not an obvious monstrosity.

I think of it as more of a subtle instability that has been mounting over time. Perhaps with each molting, the amount of time their current version can last is slowly reducing, requiring them to molt more frequently and unexpectedly, as their various faculties fail and need to be renewed. At first they could last a respectable amount of time, up until a plausible age for non-suspicious natural death. Now they are having to invent stories of assassination plots or accidents to explain away why their predecessor died at the supposed age of 50 without any obvious signs of infirmity. Every regeneration, the only thing that remains the same is their apparent age, which is the age at which they consumed the Organ and became its Bearer, which is somewhere in their 30s.

If things go on without any sort of remedy for the pattern, they may, in enough time, collapse into an endless stream of re-regeneration, once the margin closes in to give them only micro-seconds between each incarnation undergoing critical failure.
