Reason For Entering Buried City:
For years Morrigan had been in a Brotherband on the seas, posing as a male. It was forbidden for women to participate in men's busniess. When it was discovered that she was a woman, she was put ashore with limited supplies and left to fend for herself. A very angered Morrigan wandered, finding herself at the city's doorstep. There was a kind of intrigue and pull that drew her into entering- morbid curiosity if you will. After all, celtic warriors are know for their fearless (debatably suicidal) ways.
Bio:
Morrigan was raised in a small coastal dockside village by her father and mother. As the only child of the family her father was deeply ashamed they were unable to produce a male heir. It was this shame that drove him to hide the gender of his child, rearing her in the ways of men and teaching her all she would need to know. Eventually the strong-willed Morrigan had learnt all she could from her father and was growing restless. She decided to join a Brotherband (a group of warriors who sail and pillage) As a woman, it was always the constant struggle of hiding her real identity and participating in the rigorous life on a ship. She was one of the most ruthless and fearless members, but as soon as she was discovered, they lost all respect for her and put her to shore.
Here is the second character I would like to add to TBC.
Euphora Vyxel.
Age: Twenty-four. Birthdate: May 11th. Sex: Intersex. Sexuality: Heterosexual. Race: Humana. Height/Weight: 5"9' 123 lbs. Theme Song:Waves. Allegiance, Allegiance Position: The Requisite. Weapons/Equipment; Preferred Weapon: Euphora is considerably talented with quarter-staffs and blunt objects. Powers/Magical Abilities: She is able to manipulate biology around her as she sees fit. She normally uses this as a method to heal others around her but has caused necrosis in the flesh of others. However, there is a side-effect of a general sense of disposition that may result itnmental or magical retardation if over-used. It is as if whoever she spends her gift on must spend with their mentality or magic. Beliefs: She does not share her beliefs, for they are unpopular. Profession: Anthropologist with The Requisite. Birthplace: The Buried City. The Buried City Bio: An ironic twist of fate birthed Euphora. She was an early birth as a result of Necromancy forced upon her mother and was prematurely born with unusual powers and raised in the hands of Necromancers. She had a strange natural gift to manipulate the biology of anyone around her and typically did so upon the command of the Necromancers who favored her and "cared" for her.
She, however, somehow was kidnapped from the estranged city and awoke to a much later date. Technology had grown and the city that once stood was now buried in front of her. She was now an orphan to be raised. A mysterious girl found ironically next to the Buried City who had acute knowledge never once questioned or explored. She was but a child orphan found next to rubble and was seen to be delusional because of what she explained had happened.
Whatever had happened had warped her understanding of what was around her. She did not understand how her home once stood, then suddenly was buried upon rubble. Apparently, in the span of two-hundred years at that.
Now she is grown and still does not understand what she thoroughly is. Born as a result of necromantic experimentation, and seemingly having skipped two-hundred years of existence. Who was Euphora? She barely knew herself, even at the ripe age of twenty-one.
She never truly learned language, either; and relied on sign-language. Many others did not understand what she meant to say as Euphora was exceptionally silent. She follows The Requisite, which is an organization known for collecting and storing knowledge typically in the form of municipal libraries. Today, Euphora has volunteered to visit her homeland to study.
Relationships:
To be filled.
Developments:
She has volunteered to visit her homeland.
I have a few questions about the setting, mostly about Highbreach.
First off, the setting description said only twelve people have come out. That seems kind of low; is there anything preventing people from just mapping a few rooms and then coming back out the way they came to prepare to go deeper? Is there any information about Highbreach that our characters might know from those who returned?
How do people expect to survive in Highbreach? It's not like there's anywhere to get fresh food in there, and with only twelve people returning I don't think the town above would set up any kind of supply line. Is there something about the ruins that would keep adventurers alive inside it?
It isn't meant to be safe.
The terrain and layout of the town itself shifts constantly, making impossible to map effectively.
I think I'he said to people that our characters will get corrupted the further down they go. Your characters aren't expected to return, and even if they do, they won't be the same.
I'm not gonna answer your question about food, other than it will be very hard to come by once you run out. It's kind of a survival horror dungeon crawl type thing.
More or less, but talking about it here will subtract from the surprise of what will really happen. So please stop questioning the Buried City. It is three thousand years old, and meant to be mysterious.
If you're still accepting players, I've finished a character sheet. Sorry it took so long to finish; stuff kept coming up for classes, and I didn't have much time to work on it.
Rowanna Tiro
Name: Rowanna Tiro
Age: 24
Gender: Female
Race: Human
Class: Magician
Shield
Steel Rotella
Engraved with a modified Purification Field array on the inside surface, forcing foreign mana out of the shield; meant to enable the shield to block certain spells while the array is powered.
Sword
Heavily curved, tip-heavy saber; suitable for allowing strong cuts to be easily made. Similar in concept to a tulwar or 1796 light cavalry saber.
Dagger
A simple quillon dagger. Nothing special about it.
Napalm-shot bracer
Bronze bracer with metal dials , sliders, and engraved runework encoding a spell. Worn on the right arm.
Forms mana into a "bullet" that carries a heating spell. When it collides with something that breaks the bullet, the mana latches onto what broke it and rapidly heats it. The affected matter usually combusts, flash-boils, or cracks from thermal shock.
Many of the bullet's characteristics are variable; they are controlled by engraved dials and sliders attached to the bracer and the amount of mana Rowanna feeds into it.
Very little combat experience; only a few lessons with swordsmen to learn the basics and a bit of practice with her enchanted equipment. Knows that the sharp bits should go into her opponents.
Very slight knowledge of Highbreach written language; knows a few common words.
Magic: Runecraft
A style of magic based on directing mana to obey written instructions using the user's comprehension of the symbols/writing used, rather than directly controlling it.
Enchanting
Casting spells that linger and effect their target for a prolonged period.
Lesser knowledge of necromancy
Understands some of the principles behind its workings and theories about how it affects the world, along with a few methods to combat it.
Armor
Gambeson
Steel greaves
Pointed kettle helmet, reminiscent of a small witch's hat, with a Glowing Glyph inscribed.
Survival/Traveling equipment
Bags, sturdy clothes, a week's rations, canteen, knives, etc.
Thaumometer
Small engraved glass orb on a bracelet enchanted to draw in environmental mana and use it to softly glow. The more mana in the immediate surroundings to be drawn in, the brighter the glow.
Grimoire
Written in waterproof ink, with runework embossed into the cover for greater durability.
Contains pre-drawn sigils that shape Rowan's magic into spells. Meant to be copied and combined using Sigil Copying Rune tattoo.
Mostly utilitarian spells prepared while planning for Highbreach.
Heating sigil; heats up according to amount of mana channeled powering it.
Glowing glyph; uses mana channeled to it to glow.
Filter seal; defines a barrier that prevents things other than water from passing through, at the expense of mana stored within.
Purification Field array; defines a region of space and forces out all mana that does not match the input mana. High mana cost, scaling with the amount of mana forced away and the size of the region.
Environmental Consumption array; uses mana from the caster to draw in mana from the environment and direct it to obey writing in the same way that the caster's mana does, feeding some of the drawn mana back to itself and the excess to a designated output. Requires a large amount of environmental mana to sustain itself, converts inefficiently since a large amount of mana is spent on aligning drawn in mana, and usually ends up draining enough mana from the environment that it runs out of fuel and breaks.
Incomplete Battery array; holds mana and releases it at a controlled rate, which is written when the glyph is copied and completed.
Charcoal Creation array; combination of a heating glyph and a barrier to enable the creation of charcoal from organic matter.
Etc.
Seal tattoos
Separation Barrier Sigil tattoo; covers most of back.
Enforces consciously controlled separation of outside mana and the self/soul.
Fueled by bearer's soul/mana; designed to burn out user's soul before it allows unallowed contamination/manipulation.
Sigil Copying Rune tattoo; located across arms and upper back.
Meant for copying sigils from grimoire.
Shapes a fluid or fine powder infused with the bearer's mana into a shape similar to a given preexisting form.
Mana Storage Rune tattoo; covers abdomen.
Meant to store excess mana.
Essentially instructions that command the input mana to linger and eventually be drawn and used.
Currently contains about one week's worth of generated mana.
Writing Equipment
Brushes, ink, ink-making kit, etc.
Notebooks
Reason For Entering Buried City: Rowanna wants to check if there's any old necromancers still around planning to break free and wreak havoc, and report back and/or stop them if they are.
Rowanna was born in a trading center city to a family of bookbinders. When she was fourteen she was apprenticed to a magician, a renowned enchanter and runecrafter. There, she learned the art of runecraft: harnessing magic by shaping one's mana to comprehend and follow written instructions. She had been studying spellwriting and enchantment for most of a decade when she learned about the Buried City and what her knowledge of magic implied.
A fundamental aspect of necromancy is that it lets things linger long after they should have died. Highbreach was sealed, not destroyed. Thus, it is quite possible that there are necromancers from the time of Highbreach's fall that still exist, with millennia to plot, research their craft, and work to break free, limited only by a small influx of life and mana to corrupt for power.
Rowanna was concerned about the potential threat of ancient undying necromancers breaking free and volunteered to investigate as no one more capable was willing to walk into the ancient deathtrap. Rather, every magician that she and her master knew who was willing and capable had already entered the Buried City and disappeared. She and her aged master worked together to prepare for the Buried City; writing rune arrays, creating tattoos, enchanting equipment, and cramming some combat and survival training that would be applicable in a cursed labyrinth. Once Rowanna was as prepared as she and her master could afford --her master needed to work to eat and maintain his business-- she left for the Buried City, searching for others who seek answers within.
This character isn't supposed to be great at direct combat. It's meant for more of a support role; Rowanna's spells are mostly focused on keeping the party alive and easing exploration by using previously prepared material. I'm worried that some of the equipment might be problematic, though.
Is the grimoire alright to have? The idea behind it is that it contains a ton of seals meant for making surviving and exploring the Buried City easier, without having to spend hours writing every single one of them out. Although, I guess I kind of did a bit of that anyways.
The character I made is pretty much based on using previously prepared stuff, such as the prewritten things in the grimoire. The problem is that since the grimoire's contents aren't completely defined, it could let me pull out whatever I want. That's intentional for small things like getting drinkable water and light, but it might get out of hand; for example, if a zombie horde shows up I shouldn't pull an anti-zombie field out of thin air. I'll try not to do anything like that, but it's still possible. Is there an OOC thread to discuss things like premade rune stuff before I try using them?
If this character won't work, I can rewrite it or make another one. It'll take a while, though; schoolwork keeps coming up, though it's slowing down a little bit.
