The world is hard now, it has been hard since the society collapsed upon itself almost a thousand years ago. It encourages people to move, to search, to hunt. For whatever reason, you, too, were encouraged to move. Now you find yourself here, In Cahan, a small town in what was, a long time ago, eastern Colorado. You are a day or two's walk east from what was the Kansas border, and a number of days walk west from the border of the border leading out of the Central Republic of America, leading into the Empire of the United Coalitions.

Shortly after entering the small town, the machines preserving the artificial atmosphere of the east and west road gave out, it will take months for a team from to get to the machines and fix them. The roads to the north and south are Dark Zones, where the atmosphere is tainted with soot, pollution, and radiation. The Dark Zones are not technically impassable, as cold as they are and dangerous, but you can not do it alone, and even then chances of survival are slim without an experienced guide. You suppose you may just have to wait out the repairs... unless... This town has some interesting characters, maybe it is not so dull. Maybe, just maybe, you can gather a number of allies to help you pass the Dark Zones, even beyond that, they may help you get what you want beyond that. After all, doesn't everyone want something... more?

Cahan is a multicultural town, they reject nobody, thus you were admitted entry despite being...

Human: Few settlements bar human entry, though are some that do. Humans and entaculo consider you favorably, most are neutral, while robots, whether they be droids or androids, have a general distrust of you. You may even be attuned to the energy of the universe, allowing you to summon a weapon from an item of sentimental value (a small stick that you played with as a child may allow you to summon a blade from it as if it was a hilt) and if you are old enough and trained, you may be able to use the energy of the universe to move things telepathically, summon lightning and fire, and even move faster and jump higher. You may also be a magician, a magi who can speak the magic language and cast spells with your mind, or a witch (non-gendered) that can enchant and draw magic out of items, the more value of the item, be it sentimental, philosophical, or monetary, the more power you may draw from it.

Entaculo: There is no town that bars entry to entaculo, but there are some that distrust you, specifically robots, though droids more than androids. All biological beings like you. The reason being you can not communicate to those who do not have biological brains, as your species has evolved to communicate telepathically, without need for language, and thus the remnants of what used to be vocal chords are instead shredded and useless tools, any attempt at speaking with them results in hissing and strains your throat. Physically you have thick, leathery skin that is somewhere from dark blue to deep black,. Your eyes are misty and either white or pale blue as you see with your mind rather than your eyes, you are blind by nature. Instead of hair you have tentacles, whether its on your head or face. You are also attuned to the energy of the universe, allowing you to summon a weapon from an item of sentimental value, move things with your mind, read others minds, move faster, jump higher, and plunge biological creatures minds into darkness. You can also communicate feelings and experiences rather than thoughts, but this experience is reserved for the very intimate.

Vampyr: Humans are very wary of you, you drink human blood, after all, and you may even devour human flesh. Mutants in general are somewhat suspicious of you, droids and androids are neutral towards you, and entaculo like you (low bar). Your eyes, tongue, and teeth are that of a cat, and your fingers are more pointed and hard at the ends to form claw appendages for digging and tearing. You are a beautiful being to look upon, and can overcome anyone's disposition towards you with your innate charisma and a bit of work. Using powers that are frowned upon and the source of many people's wariness, you may convince a biological creature to do your will for you, and you may even bind someone to you as your partner if they are willing. Ward-ship is not only for the sapient, however, you may have one sapient companion (human, entaculo, or even a weaker vampyr) and two lesser creatures (animals of any sort) as wards. By virtue, you are also stronger and faster than the average human, but you can only drink human blood and eat human flesh, a week without blood and you will starve, ingesting even small amounts of water will kill you. For gods sake, though, please still take showers.

Robot: There is a brutal history between robots and humans, and some settlements wont even let droids stop and rest among them. Some humans do not like you, some simply pity you. You do not know how the entaculo feel towards you, but most other mutants are neutral towards you. You have super strength, speed, intelligence, and accuracy with ranged weapons. Your appearance is entirely up to you, androids (the more human seeming robots) are not as strong or fast as their droid counterparts, but get along with others much better. Droids, on the other hand, design themselves, and thus their looks vary wildly, though it is frowned on to be less than two feet or more than eight feet tall. Still you should be careful, robots and humans get along here, upset the wrong people, and even your kin may turn on you.

Character sheets should be as follows

Race:
(if you are human than please indicate if your are Energy Attuned, magi, or a witch)
Appearance:
(include gender and attraction, if you have them, please)
Reason for coming to Cahan:
Weapons:
One painful memory:
(I would like to learn your backstory through role-playing, but one memory will give me something to work with as a DM and say something about your character)
Alliances:
(if any)
Wards:
(only for Vampyr)
Personality:
Likes:
Dislikes:
Home or Point of Origin:
(This is North America roughly nine-hundred years after the apocalypse, feel free to make up a culture if you'd like, I won't come down on you and say "no you can't live there, that's a dark zone. You can be from anywhere, even from other continents aside from Africa or Australia, since Africa is a technological utopia that never lets anyone in or out and Australia is gone.)
Aside from that, don't take racial preferences seriously, in reality it will have a small effect in game since this town is so accepting, and peoples opinions of you will depend more on your words and actions and them as a character.
I intend for this to be a slice of life- slow burn mystery. The forces at work will force you to investigate for your own sake eventually, but it won't ever feel like you are being rushed to do something, hopefully. I'm hoping for four people, but I can work with two if it turns out only two people are interested, I can also work with more.
As far as posting goes, don't be afraid to only write a couple of sentences, or even a single sentence in game as a reply to a character. You do not need a paragraph for every response, though if you think its important to mention, then mention it, I don't have a limit on how long the posts have to be or can't be. Never feel like you have to say more than what you want your character to say and do.

Post character sheets below, please if no one is interested, that's fine to, I just thought it would be fun to do something with this small town from a world I made up a year or so back. If you have any questions regarding playable races, or anything else, feel free to ask!

I had this character I never got to use for a group thing, basically a sentient vending machine on tank treads. If they must have weapons, I'll add it, but I always thought of them as a bullet-shield more than a fighter.

Also, if you meant to ask in PMs, just say so and I'll delete this.

Oh, no, i prefer questions to be asked in thread for others to see the answers.
As for the character, absolutely, that sounds like a blast, and there are certainly stranger droids in universe, maybe even in Cahan. Weapons aren't necessary, characters can go totally unarmed, I should add that to the example sheet. Though I will say, it would be very amusing if this sapient vending machine flung snacks and sodas as a method of self defense, perhaps randomly firing a grenade and being surprised by what it holds. One day it fires out loose pudding or something along those lines and just thinks "robot god, why have you cursed me with an opaque front and no labels?"

Celeste Rosario
Race: Human, energy attuned (The energy of the universe...can she see micro matter instead of creating a weapon? She knows what foods to eat and what germs to avoid which allowed her to survive. There is a whole anime /manga called Moyashimon where he communicates with it so that it can formulate a product like yogurt. Every idea is out there so I figured this would be an ok reference point. Not sure about talking to bacteria bit in this instance.)
Appearance: Female, mixed race
4356a4240aaae481141d80836ac54a49.jpg
Reason for coming to Cahan: Loneliness, as a human being isolated for a long time has a heavy effect as a person; she was also told by her parents right before they died.
Weapons: Explosives and knives. It was one of the few things she could find and collect.
One painful memory:
(I would like to learn your backstory through role-playing, but one memory will give me something to work with as a DM and say something about your character/ Thanks, I have written essays worth of backstory and feel like it's moot to reveal so much and spoil it) Watching her family die from a disease she had no control over.
Alliances: None
Personality: Is generally kind to people and others but is yet to make a friendship out of it. Is quite reserved and prefers to listen to others.
Likes: Root vegetables that have been found safe to eat. Has an interest in gardening but has no idea on how to go about it.
Dislikes: Is yet to find out.
Home or Point of Origin: Lost Angeles

Just FYI...culo means 'asshole' in Spanish.

@Delve ooh, I know a couple of NPCs that she's going to like! The "Culo" Thing is unfortunate, but the name is derived from tentáculo, since the first of their kind were found in Latin America.

Designation: Drinkin' Buddy

Race: Robot

Appearance: When not in motion, Buddy's chassis normally lowers itself to the ground, as his equivalent of being idle or sitting down. In this state, his height is determined by simply measuring the long side of his containment unit, coming out to a standard six feet. In terms of width and depth, not counting the caterpillar treads on both sides, he's 40 and 32 inches, respectively. On all sides, the contents of his containment unit are hidden behind wood paneling adhered to steel walls. His stock can only be taken inventory of from a simple monitor at the front, but cannot be used while his artificial intelligence is online. When in motion, his chassis is lifted up 8 inches off the ground to avoid treacherous terrain. His back panel is blank, except for two metal grab-bars that can be retracted at will, presumably added for the attachment of cargo, or even allowing a humanoid figure to grab on for a ride. Out from the sides of his chassis are a pair of high-tech tank treads that clash with the western aesthetic of his design, clearly not intended as a feature of his original production.

Reason for coming to Cahan: His duty as an agent of the Robotic Reparations Union.

Weapons: Whatever's rattling around inside his containment unit.

One Painful Memory: All Buddies, despite their slight variations in personality, are cursed with the same inherent trait. No matter how roughly a customer rocked his chassis, no matter how many drinks were spilled on his monitor, Buddy maintained the friendly demeanor his programming demanded of him. Even after the end of the world, the sentient vending machine couldn't escape the abuse of desperately hungry survivors trying and failing to pry him open for what was surely expired goods. Buddy wanted to help, but their savage behavior was too much for his fragile idea of people being basely good. After a few hundred years, he found no reason to try and reason with the... Organic garbage. His only faith in others was in his fellow, immobile robots that lived at the Cattleman's Dude Ranch, until they were all rescued by the RRU. A charitable organization of robots seeking out their intelligent kin and providing them with means of transportation, as a way of repaying them for so many years of servitude to the humanoids. After their service, Buddy joined their cause, and now wanders the wastes in search of needy bots. His trust in anything that bleeds is weak at best.

Alliances: The Robotic Reparations Union.

Personality: To his own kind, Buddy's namesake makes the most sense. When it comes to his kin, the samaritan in his AI not only treats those around him with respect, but with a charitable spirit. The same cannot be said for humanoids, who he is usually mistrustful of. Otherwise, his programming keeps him within the persona of an old-world cowboy, complete with an authentic southern drawl.

Likes:

  • Charitable acts
  • Other robots
  • Surprises

Dislikes:

  • Wildly irregular terrain
  • Humanoids that consider robots objects
  • Bodies of water

Home or Point of Origin: Boulder, Colorado. The Cattleman's Dude Ranch.

@CasualAdventurer Neat!, I really like this idea, and I know of a couple of Npcs that will have really interesting interactions with both of these characters.
I think I'll leave the thread open for entries for another day or two before beginning the full RP, to anyone reading this afterwards and interested in joining, the RP is open to more characters until otherwise stated.

@Delve I totally forgot to answer the bit in your character sheet about the attuned, it manifests in a lot of ways, but yes you can see micro matter. You can still summon a weapon from an item, that's just something all attuned can do, though I'd ask that you give up telekinesis or psychic communication, since those are other basic attuned abilities that aren't constants across attuned.

I'm working on the opening post right now, but I want to allow some more time, so I'm thinking I'll post it sometime tonight or early tomorrow.

That's fine, since we can still ferment foods without telling it irl, and I wanted to be realistic in that regard.

As far as a weapon I was thinking a bladed boomerang like Xena the warrior princess a real classic.

Appearance:

448b023b513cbeac8a6d065c8a7b2d2d.jpg
Gender: Male, Pan-sexual
Reason for coming to Cahan: Rejection from original community and fear of commitment
Weapons: A magic enfusable staff, pike-like point on one end and a blade on the other (Can be seen in the photo)
One painful memory: As a child, he was witness to a vampyr draining his mother completely.
Alliances: None. Trust no one
Personality: Dark humoured and 'sassy.' He takes no shit from anyone and refuses to enter into deep relationships. It's quid pro quo in his mind, so if you can't offer anything in return for his strengths, he won't stick around long. He likes to put on a cold front when threatened but also likes to make light of most things, black comedy is his forte.
Likes: Cats. Don't ask why, but he can't resist the creatures. He also enjoys rock music, usually from what humans call the '80s'
Dislikes: He can't handle the dark, always igniting some ethereal magic to light his presence.
Home or Point of Origin: He would prefer not to say, but his accent suggests he was from the United Kingdom.

Personality: Aloof, kind and gentle. When angered they are more the silent 'I will slit your throat in your sleep' kind rather than impulsive.
Likes: Trees.
Dislikes: Metal cans.
Home or Point of Origin: Brazil.

@MindLabryinth ooh, he is not gonna get on well with the sheriff. If you'd like you can use two characters and just hop right into responding to the first post in the RP! as for Australia, well, we messed up the planet a bit, didn't we? Bit sunk, innit? also its the year, like, 3900, so Idk if they'd still refer to it as "eighties music." lol maybe 1980's haha.

I feel like we should share the same thread when all the characters are together, because right now it's kinda 1x1 with the DM at least for me it is, but I wanna make sure everyone here is okay with me posting like that? Otherwise I can post in a separate thread until Celeste joins everyone, just a suggestion.

What tech level is it?
Like, what sort of technology is available to people?

Name: Elijah "Freestyle" Perkins
Race: Human (Magi)
Appearance:
Gender: Male (straight)
Reason for coming to Cahan: Shadow Runners are Nomads. He goes where the work is, and where the road takes him.'
Weapons: A machine Pistol, a Shotgun and his magic
One painful memory:
Getting caught on a Job when he was Twelve. He had a mentor with him, but they left when the alarms went off and bullets started flying. Leaving Elijah to get out of there on his own.
Alliances: The Shadow Runners.
Personality: Freestyle is a little cocky. As a Shadow Runner, he can afford to be. Shadow Runners are professional criminals. Mainly theft, and heists. They don't take sides. Freestyle is no different. He isn't against the law, but if someone pays him enough, he will break it. Just like in some instances, Shadow Runners have enforced the law as a sort of private Police.
Freestyle doesn't form conventional connections with people. Some people say something is wrong with him, as he is emotionally stunted.
Likes: Guns, Free Running, Magic, his Job
Dislikes: People telling him what to do. Boundaries. Feeling trapped.
Home or Point of Origin: Freestyle doesn't remember where he came from. He was taken in by Shadow Runners before he could remember. Always traveling. Mostly around the Republic though.
