In Yonas's case, this ability is very much like a silencer on a firearm, but quite a bit more effective and more versatile. It essentially 'mutes' Yonas entirely, but also serves to silence anything he is in immediate contact with - (touching). Examples of applicable sounds might be the jingling of keys, a cough or sneeze, the squeak of sneakers, etc.
Source of Power:
A bite, nothing more, nothing less. Yonas had long since grown accustomed to bug bites and hadn't even given the spider a second glance before smashing it and going to sleep. He... sort of regrets his indifference that night.
Driving Force:
Yonas has seen and experienced loss and hardship over the course of his young life, and hates to see others suffering as he has. He just really wants to help.
Bio:
Yonas was among the hundreds of thousands of orphans that survived The Great African Wars and their aftermath (1996-2008), owing much of his early childhood to the compassion of strangers and foreign aides. Among said strangers were brave UN peacekeepers who dared to remain to offer support, one of which having become quite fond of Yonas. One Miss Katherine Weller had clandestinely frequented the homes of those harboring misplaced Tutsi women and children in secret, and had spent quite a bit of time with Yonas before the UN forced her to evacuate. Orphaned as a toddler, Yonas had no memories of his lost family and so naturally had very little to mourn. He was a sweet and optimistic child, one Katherine never could forget.
In the years that followed, Yonas encountered yet more hardship. The militia patrols and the raiding made life Hell for him and the other children, who were always being forced to hide in the brush or shuffled into the backs of trucks in the night. Hunger and illness crept up on those in hiding, picking them off one by one. The cramped safe houses full of crying children, the gunshots, and the buzzing of well-fed flies had become the norm.
Fast forward to about 2008, when Katherine was permitted to return to Central Africa and did so immediately, praying he'd survived. Finding him was no easy task, but after months and months of searching through the records of thousands of identified children, she had succeeded in locating him. His adoption was completed but a few years later, and in the summer of 2010, Yonas and Katherine finally set foot in America together.
He lived a happy life with his adoptive mother for a time... she taught him everything and anything she could, taking advantage of his thirst for knowledge and turning him into a model student via endless homeschool study sessions. Alas, all good things must come to an end. A normal visit to Sudan took a turn for the worse, and Katherine did not recover from the illness she'd contracted even after being brought back to the states for treatment. At 19, Yonas found himself alone yet again.
At 25, Yonas has only just recently seen fit to return to Central Africa for one final visit, to honor the late Katherine's wish to have her ashes spread on African soil. The spider bite that started it all came about during that same visit, however, and upon arriving back home in the states just a few weeks ago, he came to realize that his life had been drastically altered yet again.
As always, Yonas will simply have to adjust to the changes and move on.
Miscellaneous Info:
