Love it. A person dealing with the unreasonable consequences of being born different and surrounded by, and ruled over by, people who are frightened of you.

Whole thing rings of Watchmen to me, not a bad aesthetic. Dystopian superheroes.

No worries. It sounds like my idea of an ex spy-pro thief character idea still works with the theme, though, right? Maybe something a little more scientific and streamlined like heat manipulation? Not like fire bending, but literally the ability to control the heat in the air around him. He could use this to create frigid pockets of air which apply a slow effect to enemies, flash freeze things to make them brittle enough to crumble, and then once he's absorbed the heat he can release it to melt metal/immolate foes. I'm using the same power design for another rp but it's admittedly not as... involved... as I'm hoping it could be in this one.

I'm currently thinking of someone who fully intends to use their powers to get back at the people who decided to dehumanize the powered, possible supervillain or borderline depending on how the situation turns out. But if that won't work out then I'll come up with something else.

If we go with Chesh's plan of doing a state sponsored 'Suicide Squad' of sorts, your characters nefarious intentions could make for interesting story. Trying to find ways to undermine the agency and help other Inhuman supremacists without tipping your hand to the agency that will undoubtedly have some sort of potent leverage to control us.

I'm also thinking they'd be a successful cat-burglar-for-hire/ex spy whom probably tried to hide their ability at first but got found out and because of their past were recruited into the team in exchange for not going to inhuman-prison.

Maybe you could give me a better idea of what you mean, given that we're shooting for a kind of ... normal-people-with-sudden-superpowers-facing-xenophobia feel.

What if we get there through an arc? Like ... part of me really wants a bunch of people who honestly WANT to help convince the public at large that Inhumans aren't something you have to be afraid of. I want them to like ... struggle, fail a few times, feel that pressure of people calling for their disbanding, people trashing them in the public eye, and then they manage to pull out a win, and they expect there to be this turn around in public opinion or treatment ... and nothing ... people still find fault with what they did, they're still treated like dangerous weapons in a cozy prison ... I could see that really pissing a genuinely altruistic person off to their very core, pushing them to conspiracy or violence.

@Cheshire Cat I see why I'm being confusing. As I was reading the starter, I came to favor the idea of a an ex spy because of all the references to intelligence agencies and the deep state controlling these new agencies devoted to inhumans, especially your opening scene. Let me write a little bio to explain exactly the type of character I mean to play. Of course i realize now you'd probably rather the character's profession be a gas station attendant or something over someone actually connected to intelligence, i just generally go for the warrior-type roles no matter the roleplay but that wouldn't be a problem to change.

Nathan was a military brat growing up, and adapted to the lifestyle perhaps too well. He partied feverishly like his life depended on it through high school. He payed absolutely no mind to anything remotely academic, other than his spot on the wrestling team. As such it was no surprise his father sent him away to military school by junior year. This, as it is for some, actually helped give the boy structure and seemingly tamed his more wild tendencies. Of course, as most people know, the military doesn't exactly stifle one's drinking habits. That didn't change well into his college years, which were at a military college. He discovered a love for jiu jitsu, becoming a high level grappler while getting his degree. His blue blood background along with a long education setting up for a military career had him scouted by several secret operations projects. Nathan's father, being in the air force, attempted to pressure the young man into going for the airborne special forces of course. Nathan, perhaps still feeling some animosity and rebelliousness towards his father, chose the navy instead.

Now, naval intelligence and CIA are famously reluctant working partners. The nature of both has them working all over the world, yet consistently in the same places. As such, a certain amount of poaching is going to be natural. The CIA tempted a still young, yet now slightly experienced and successful at recon, with promises of a bit more glamour. At least as much as the life of espionage can afford. Soldiers sleep in bunks, agents get hotel rooms. Not to mention trading his combat boots for a government card and a wardrobe budget.

This is when a twenty seven year old agent flew too close to the sun. He only lasted a year with the agency on the books before he was moved to a blacklist project. He had seen violence, even things which kept him up at night as a soldier. As a spy so far he had only experienced a few ordered hits and a rough interrogation. Nothing he regretted, only things which bothered him up until this point. All things he could write off in his mind as "for freedom."

It was only after joining a joint project with homeland security that he started questioning his loyalty to his country. An incident had happened in which an entire town was obliterated. In the name of national security Nathan found himself doing off the books background checks, trailing civilians, even conducting lone manhunts. His ability in one on one combat made him especially effective at these tasks now required to discern inhumans hiding amongst the population and bring them in for questioning or prosecution. Agents like Nathan were especially effective if the now superpowered individual had a history of violence. Even with seemingly supernatural abilities your average person doesn't know how to defend themselves against a trained combatant.

Nathan thought nothing of the job until one day his own powers materialized. Humans can be so logical at times, and the next second make the wrong decision out of fear. Nathan kept them hidden. He made no attempt to conjure up the powers further or train them. He actively tried things like meditation and self hypnotism to keep even thoughts of the powers suppressed. It's a shame how often fate pays no mind to our efforts. One day, in the worst case scenario, his powers erupted in a display right in the middle of the blacksite HQ. To this day Nathan doesn't remember how he escaped all of those agents.

Some men who've been burned by the intelligence community and put on a wanted list would go into self exile. Seclude themselves in one of the great forests of north america, perhaps only emerging a century later. Nathan had no such desire. Sure, he was an outlaw now, but he was a free man. He had spent most of his life now submitting to authority in the most literal ways. A younger Nathan seemed to shine through the twenty eight year old at this point. He went off the deep end, and robbed a bank. This was almost comically easy for the ex spy. After this, the world became his oyster. He never killed anyone during this period, remaining a complete shadow to the public. He staged art heists and even got involved a rediculous theft of a truckload of sports cars. He trained his power like it was an extension of his body he'd possessed forever. Unfortunately, his complete flip in loyalty had made him a priority target, and his fantasy criminal existence in high end hotels like a GTA character was brought to an expected close. He was given two options. Go to a specially constructed cell they'd been preparing for him for a year that'd he'd never escape from as long as he lived, or continue the work he had been doing on what sounded more like a publicity stunt than a team. At least with the latter he could still breathe fresh air.

The idea was of someone who didn't necessarily want anything more than a quiet life but found the reaction to the "inhumans" to be excessive and wrong, and then may have come into their own powers which they may or may not have control of and then it became more like a personal war. Seeing that develop or become something else over the course of an arc in which the characters become familiar with each other at least might be for the best though.

I really like the idea of the 'forced superhero team' for a few reasons.

#1. It's Cheshire's idea and the game will live or die based on her inspiration to keep us going.
#2. It gives us a reason to be a disparate group of people who were brought together by elements out of our control and incentivizes us to stick together.
#3. It gives several areas for clear action and conflict. There's scenes when we're dealing with supervillains, the public, our handlers, other law enforcement.

All good stuff.

Character wise, I think it would be cool if we all had powers that would lead the powers that be to think we were too dangerous to live, but it's those powers that make us valuable to deal with supervillains.

For my character, and I'll go ahead and stake this firm claim, I'll be the character that justifies how we can be an effective team of heroes in a more realistic, grounded world. My character can create portals to anywhere they can see, even if they're seeing things through a camera feed or a recording. So, if there's a hostage situation in a bank, we can get there nigh instantaneously so long as there's a camera feed anywhere nearby.

My character had willingly registered, planning to use their power to provide secure, instantaneous travel. Set up shop in a major city with hubs all around the world and just rake in the cash. The government took one look at what they could do, tranqed them, slapped cuffs and a hood on them, and kept them in a secure location until a determination was made on just what to do with them.

This is definitely the theme I was trying to run with. My character felt like he was forced into a life of chaos from his previously streamlined one, and proceeded to react by causing chaos of his own in turn. Not to mention the jump from authoritarion to near-anarchistic.

The idea was of someone who didn't necessarily want anything more than a quiet life but found the reaction to the "inhumans" to be excessive and wrong, and then may have come into their own powers which they may or may not have control of and then it became more like a personal war. He could probably be convinced to the side of the rebels as a matter of fact, but definitely wouldn't see their side immediately.

This is all assumin cheshire likes my current character model.

*stretches* Mmmm, sorry, took a day off to relax, drink tea, smoke weed, find a face claim, all kinds of good things.

Am back now, and in plotting mood ^_^

Alright, from the top!

@Laughingstokk
*nods nods* Yes, "Gas station attendants with superpowers" was actually a runner-up for the name of the RP. So yeah, he's a little perpendicular to the feel with his black-ops-turned-black-cat-turned-black-widow ways. There are elements in there that we could work with, but the whole picture together is just ... is perfect character for different RP.

@Beppen
However you want to play it, I think we can work it in. I'm excited to see the character concept tho, get an idea of what drove them from mild-mannered objector to active rebel! Or am I just thick-headed and you're saying you'd like to be an open antagonist?

@Baxter Peters
XD I'm trying to picture him like ... getting a letter in the mail about his business license being approved and ready for pickup, and him getting all nicely dressed, stopping for a latte on the way, thinking about whether or not he should splurge for champagne and tell friends right away, or tell his parents first and plan an actual celebration for the business opening ... and he steps up to the counter, and gives his name ... and then the lobby goes quiet except for the sound of boots tromping across linoleum, and he feels a sting in his neck, and eats floor ... latte slowly leaking across the seamless floor as he slurs "but I was approved" and passes out :P

... that may not be what you had in mind, and I can't wait to see your take, but this is perfectly what I hope for ... your average person developing powers, and suddenly not being treated like a person anymore, no matter what qualities are obvious on your sleeve.

Next post will be profile skeleton and my character concept, just cause we're starting to settle things ^_^

It will have to depend on the rest of the group, I don't want to be a sole outlier from the start. From the sound of things it may be best to have the character go along with the idea, doubtful it will help the situation for their self and others like them anytime soon but vaguely hopeful it might eventually show that the strong response was excessive and wrong. If and when that hope is gone, then it might progress towards outright antagonism.

Alright, just ... in the interests of "first" ... I'm making a character that is a lot like "The Ray" in her powerset; Her body absorbs energy from EM radiation and stores it. With stored energy she can fly, project blasts of coherent radiation, make simple shapes and structures, and she receives a few biological buffs; boosted speed/reflexes, boosted toughness, boosted healing, takes sustenance from light.

She is light dependent tho, her weakness being that, once her batteries run out, she loses her powers and will remain in a weakened state until she has had time to recharge. Prolonged captivity in an environment shielded from all EM radiation will cause her to fall into a coma or ... *dramatic music swells, end of episode*

@Beppen If we're still working within the framework discussed, part of the idea is that they're like ... they're part necessary crime-averting mechanism, but also a PR stunt. The characters are going to be forced not only into danger that they aren't prepared to deal with on behalf of people they don't agree with, but afterward they're going to be expected to play pageant queen for the cameras, wave and smile and repeat 'world peace' anytime someone asks a question. If your character takes one of those opportunities to be like "... uh ... it's nice saving people and all, having a runner app designed after me, but ... I'm a person ... and I don't like waking up to the business end of a shotgun barrel because I'm too dangerous for rights no matter how many people I save", but only being able to say that after the team learns to work together and overcome their inexperience.

... and then dealing with the consequences of like ... getting in trouble for that, having their handlers try to carry out discipline, have the team support your character, or better, have the team split on supporting you, driving a wedge between members that comes out when lives are on the li-I'm just rambling now ... you get it ... am I being oppressively hands on or are parts of you still enjoying this experience?

Attempted rape
First Name: Nathan
Middle Name: Toby
Last Name: Brunswick
Date of birth: July 30th, 1998
Birthplace: Greenville, NC.
Registration Status: Registered, Reluctantly
Power/s: Temperature Manipulation

Nathan was gifted with the ability to control the temperature of pockets of air around him, or specific objects. As it effects the literal movement of atoms, and states of matter, this can be a versatile status effecting power as well as a damage dealing one. An object touched by Nathan and flash frozen can be affected so extremely that it crumbles to the touch. Metal, stone, and glass can all be reduced to dust. It only effects up to twice his body weight in mass at a time, up to three hundred and sixty pounds. Enough for a doorway in a cinder block wall, or to render almost a quarter section of a small car nonexistent. The pockets of air which he makes are akin to the void of space, apply a slowing effect to those passing through it for a short time, as air density effects the speed of an object. He can effect a three meter space around him with this, or make it a cone blast out from his hands up to ten meters away and one meter wide at it's end. He could also freeze someone's lungs and heart by touching their chest, or render their limbs to those of mannequins but finds this ability morbid and has never used it purposely.

Activating the other side of Nathan's power, which deals with heat, can be a tad trickier. He must use his cooling ability twice on an object or the air to store heat before having any meaningful effects. He could also find something like a lit grill or a running car engine to give him this substantial level more quickly, but this is not always available. All in all his powers functions fundamentally the same as they do with cooling substances, the area of effect and cone blast being identical dimensions. The only difference being he can't melt stone with the level of heat he can produce at the moment, only metals or glass.

Nathan is also physically resistant to extreme temperatures. Those that would freeze a normal human solid feel like a brisk fall day to him, and molten metal like a warm bath.
Weakness/es: The power of temperature manipulation can be a deadly one, but one major drawback would be it's lack of stopping power. A car barreling at him, even mostly melted, would still have all of it's force retained and would likely still crush him flat before solidifying over top of him making a goopy metal grave. Not to mention his need to charge the arguably more effective attack he possesses. He could also do nothing about a ton of bricks falling on him, as his power might freeze a few to be brittle and only end up making way for those above it. In short, there is no concussive force to his blasts.

He also has no "low" setting on his powers. He must go full blast one way or the other. He could not lower the temperature of a small space which was too hot to be survivable to normal people to one which was, but this skill may be possible to train later. A personal weakness which effects Nathan's ability to use it's power to possibly it's fullest extent is his aversion to killing. He has no desire to kill, nor do bodily harm if it isn't necessary. This forces him to find other ways to deescalate the situation, with an inherently deadly power. The only exception to this rule is he does have the ability to pull a little power away from the cooling side, able to effect things to be icy, as opposed to completely breakable due to frigidity. The means he could cause a slick icy spot on the floor or something similar.

Distinguishing Marks: A Legend of Zelda Triforce tattoo on his left pec, a switchblade tattoo on his ankle, a "XIII" Tarot card tattoo depicting death as having bunny ears on his right upper arm, and a grouping of three smaller ones on his right calf showing the All Seeing Eye, a Leo symbol, a sun, and a crescent moon. He also has a small cut on his left cheek which he got from getting cut in a fistfight, and dimples when he smiles.
Nathan Brunswick was born lower middle class, to parents whom were neither exceptional nor disappointing. He did not go hungry, but also did not get every toy he asked for as a child. It was not a hard life, but it lead to a sense of mediocrity and low expectations which were hard to shake well into Nathan's teenage years. Other than his vague interest in martial arts, Nathan was not very active or exceptional himself either. He attempted college after high school, but dropped out after a year. In this time his love for martial arts grew and he took up training jiu jitsu. He threw himself into this hobby after flunking college, and it served him well constructively as well as allowing an otherwise introvert to socialize more than he might have without the help of THC and a college party.

This existence continued rather uninterrupted, perhaps with a few changes of scenery here and there as the young man was able. The events of December 15th, 2030 had been shocking to hear about for everyone, but was barely noticed by the underachiever at first. He had been camping on some family land when his powers erupted, and without having seen this event via the media was understandably as confused and panicked as the boy James must have been. If indeed he had had time to be confused and panicked at all. Whilst sleeping, Nathan got the feeling of being cold and wished he had brought a heater. It was not very long at all before his tent was engulfed in flames and, with it's cheap plastic fibers melting off his body, he streaked through the wilderness and into the nearby swamp without a second thought as to the snakes or mosquitoes who might be present. It wasn't until he placed himself in the now-boiling water that he realized he was not in pain. He was even a bit sad and regretful when he saw several aquatic creatures rise to the top dead from his late night bath. Meekly he left the pool of muddy steaming water, but his abilities were still active. He started a forest fire. For another forty eight hours he remained in the woods, hungry and scared, but terrified to come out for fear of burning his own house down or worse. After a while thirst became his biggest enemy, and he took some paths through the woods like a wild man back to his house he rented with his girlfriend.

His girlfriend was worried sick and had reported him missing, as well as his family. This caused him to be questioned by police so that they could close their case on the matter, and when he was given the opportunity to tell the truth he opted for a story which told of him simply being lost in the woods. He told his significant other, and she was of the opinion he should have registered then and there. She was horrified of him being taken away like others were in the news. Nathan, however, saw this as a bit of manifest destiny. He had been predisposed to romantic notions his entire life, despite his meager upbringing. He used video games, fantasy, and adventure as escapism. This lead him to the conclusion so many come to in times like this; with great power, you know the rest. He took to the streets at night, and lead a brief but successful stint as a vigilante hero. He made papers, but of course he wasn't the only one. People across the world were following suit, and the police were able to easily build a modus operandi taking current circumstances into account. It wasn't hard to piece his story. A disappearance right after the initial event in Kansas and most accounts of vigilante justice being within miles of his home. He wasn't exactly batman, but given his longtime martial arts training and the nature of his powers he was surprisingly effective as a one man unit. Perhaps the only thing which saved him from being arrested and disciplined then and there was his apparent competence, as well as the control he exhibited over his powers. A major saving grace was the fact that he had not killed anyone in this time, only causing severe burns to one or two ex convicts who had it coming. He seemed to have trained his abilities like one would any muscle or skill, growing his control and technique slowly and methodically.

He showed more promise as an asset to a new project they were forming than simply an example to other unregistered inhumans. Thus, he cemented his placement on the team of personnel they were forming to tackle these issues. They even used his story as a publicity stunt to grow public popularity for the program. "Vigilante Inhuman Turned Superhero Cop." They of course smoothed over details such as his initial reluctance to follow the proper channels, and his good looks and ideal mortality rate made him a good face for magazine covers.
Initiating Incident: (I'm assuming this means the scene which actually got him caught.)

Nathan found himself on a street not too far from a shady bar in a rougher part of his hometown. Being a college town, Greenville had no shortage of glamour bars and clubs for the college students. In other neighborhoods, some were havens for the silk road or racist biker gangs to get smashed before doing racist-biker-gang shit. Nathan had taken to walks around these areas regularly. Currently he tailed a man whom had separated from his group, walking on foot a few blocks away. Nathan recognized him as being on the news for a violent assault and rape in the months before. Given that Nathan's target was he himself drunk and seemingly had a destination, Nathan had opted to follow him over his compatriots whom had drove out to do god knows what.

Eventually they found themselves in a small trailer park. Perhaps the man lived there and Nathan had been preemptively judgmental. That was the thought, however, until the man went up to a somewhat isolated trailer and in one motion shouldered open the door.

"Oh, fuck." Said Jason bolting towards the small structure. Just as he reached the doorway a woman screamed in terror at the larger man whom had just entered her bedroom growling and yelling for her to shut up. By the time Nathan reached him he had the woman by the hair and was ripping off her thin top. Nathan grabbed the man by the wrist and activated his freezing power. The man's own panicked screams rose as his pain grew suddenly, before he could no longer feel his hand. He threw his weight into the young vigilante and Nathan easily recovered from the cheap attempt. The bigger man was not done, however, as he made to tackle Nathan. This was the wrong move to attempt on an experienced grappler. Nathan stuffed the take down and sprawled his legs behind him, the other man's nose hit the floor and began leaking blood. All the while the woman was distraught, understandably, and had crawled screaming out her bedroom window. The two men had tumbled out the bedroom doorway and into the main portion of the trailer now. Nathan transitioned to sitting on the man's back and held him down by forcing his neck to the ground with his forearm and keeping his weight centered. The man thrashed but to no avail.

"I'm gonna fuckin kill you, you fucking apeshit eating little bitch!" Cried the man whom was spitting and spreading his blood further around the linoleum of the kitchen area.

"Hey! Keep it classy, man. Only three more minutes and the cops will be here, so just stay still and I'll stop smashing your face on the floor." These words did nothing to get the man to let up. With his still functional hand he found his pocket knife, and with a stab to the calf Nathan let out his own cry of pain. He grit his teath and put his hand on the other man's shoulder which held the knife and flash froze it as well. He then got up, stomped on it and it shattered. The man tossed and turned in agony and howled like a cat. "I WASN'T GONNA DO THAT, ASSHOLE. NOW YOU DON'T HAVE ANY FUCKIN HANDS, STUPID!" Screamed Nathan, limping over to the counter and grabbing a dishrag to stop the bleeding on his leg. That's when blue flashing lights shown through the window above the sink and Nathan's eyes widened in panic. The woman he had helped had ran to the main road and got lucky enough to flag down a cop, meaning they'd arrived before Nathan's predictions.

"Oh, shit." He said quickly, before going out the door as fast as his injured leg would allow. It was not very fast, admittedly, and he was tackled by one of the two officers into the grass. They took him in for questioning that night, and there was no hiding the truth any longer. Thankfully the woman explained he had shown up to help, and the cops treated him amicably.

(Pulled a lot of this from my real life than usual to fit the average guy vibe. Hopefully more the speed you were hoping for. I would also think a team like ours would have a hand to hand combat trainer, and I have a real passion for martial arts IRL. As I have plenty of real life experience, I'd offer to play this character if we're planning a training arc. If not and you have no need for the role or want to do it yourself no hard feelings. Also if we're doing face claims, do you prefer realistic or drawn.)

First Name: Katar
Middle Name: N/A
Last Name: Krikorian
Date of birth: 5/16/2005
Birthplace: Albany, New York
Registration Status: Forced to declare once detained.
Power/s: Emits a near constant stream of wide range radio waves and occasional small bursts of microwaves ranging from .9-1m in length. She suffers no ill effects to her health from them or their apparent source in a yet to be identified organ. The organ itself seems to be producing an immense amount of energy equivalent to a much larger nuclear reactor and may be slowly increasing. Tapping into this power source likely will reduce or eliminate the radiation emissions as another outlet will be provided.
Weakness/es: She lacks any other superhuman attributes beyond a need to eat in excess of her body weight daily or her rapid metabolism could kill her in a time between 24-32 hours. As this extreme metabolism seems to be going to fueling her unusual organ, alternative foods may be prove more effective such as fissile material or gasoline but nothing suggests she would be able to digest anything a normal human couldn't.
Distinguishing Marks:
Katar possesses a somewhat long, hooked nose, and thickly haired eyebrows, but lacks the low set eyes of her parents. Her hair is dark like roasted coffee beans with matching eyes and cut short above the ears. Her lips are thin but naturally well flushed and surrounded by a dark Mediterranean complexion. She stands at just over 5'4" with broad shoulders but an otherwise average form, though her musculature is defined enough to leave a clear outline due to an unusually low amount of fat. She has neither tattoos or piercings but does have a large birthmark on her back and a small mole under her bottom lip.
Katar was born to immigrant parents from Armenia and grew up fairly normally until her powers revealed themselves while she was seeing a friend off at the airport. She still has no idea why her family had such an easy time gaining citizenship compared to many others and was discouraged from prying by her parents. The interference set off a panic and ground operations at the airport to a halt until they were traced back to her, but not before several planes that were unable to communicate with the control tower were forced to divert or perform landings that nearly resulted in collisions with other planes. As a result she was taken into custody and interrogated, with it eventually becoming apparent that she had no idea and could not control the bursts of radiation from her body. With a normal life beyond her but being considered less of a potential danger than others, she was strongly encouraged (Practically forced under threats) to join a team that was to be formed of the "inhumans". In the name of furthering her value as something to show off and possibly as an asset to the team, she was allowed to finish a Master's degree in both electrical and mechanical engineering though her "managers" have been reluctant to let her do much with it.
Initiating Incident: Considered responsible for 12/12 of the near collisions and redirections of aircraft on 12/23/30 at and around JFK International airport and one wreck of a plane. Strong evidence only exists for the five of the incidents of which the wreck is not included. A trial has been denied and despite the accidental nature of it, it has been brought up as further justification for lifelong imprisonment without generating sympathy from the public if she refuses to cooperate.

Just threw what came to me down after finally having to make a decision about what idea for powers to run with, so it's plenty subject to change if needed.

I apologize if the graphic nature of my character's sheet made anyone uncomfortable. If you all would like to try and revive this rp without me in it, I understand I was crashing the party a bit. I've deleted my sheet, Please have fun.

It didn't bother me. It's just been a busy week of buying and updating a new PC. I intend to make a character sheet tomorrow for my concept.
